A ruined village.
He ran among the trees, away from the screams and shouts.
The wooden huts were charred and burned, the wood rotting away at some places.
A rest taken at the stump of a tree.
A dark, rich forest close by.
Footsteps approaching, yet too small and unsure to be one of the villagers.
Exactly the same as it had been so long ago.
A small hand tugging on his clothing. A pair of wide, though fearless green eyes.
The wind rustled among the leaves and branches of the dark forest.
"Excuse me, Mr. Fox. Can you please help me find my village?" A child's plea for help. A softening of liquidly golden eyes.
Everything so familiar.
Racing through the forest with a tiny figure on his shoulders. Delighted laughter as they raced with the wind.
The others began walking forward; he followed slowly.
Arriving at the abandoned, ruined village. The emerald-eyed child walking into a broken house. He stood outside, waiting for her though he knew not why.
The memories were so palpable that he could practically see them.
The little golden-haired child walking back out of the charred door. A small hand wiping away tears as she said, "I can't find my mommy and daddy."
He saw the same broken house, still standing, though rotting now.
Carrying the little bundle in his arms as he once again sped through the forest. She was silent, though he could feel her hot tears falling.
They quickly made their way through the abandoned village and the forest.
The moonlight penetrating the trees at some places, casting a soft light on the ground.
That area was soon left behind, forgotten.
A yawn. "You're nice. I like you Mr. Fox." The small figure snuggling up to him. "Good night."
