"How could you? How could your grades be exceeded by a filthy dirty mudblood!" Lucius Malfoy roared at his son, Draco Malfoy, spitting in his rage. "I remind you, you are a pureblood! Furthermore, I go through the trouble of escaping from Azkaban and you don't even welcome me!"

Draco flinched at the words. "Father…"

Lucius slapped his son on the cheek. Then, smiling devilishly, he pointed his wand at him.

"Crucio!" he cried.

The alley was filled with Draco's screams.

Hermione Granger, who decided to go to Diagon Alley only the day after the incident, to buy her books, heard. Rushing to where the sound was coming from, she stopped instinctively when she almost took her wand out. Shaking her head, she reminded herself that she was allowed to use magic because she lived in Hogwarts. Dumbledore himself had given her permission.

Still rushing towards the screams, she whipped out her wand. Finally, she reached the alley where the screams were coming from. Taking a deep breath, she edged along and peeked around the corner.

And saw Draco.

Hermione gasped. Here was the boy who teased and bullied her mercilessly for the past 5 years. The only thing was… nobody deserved to be treated like that, even not Draco Malfoy. Her mind made up, she took her wand and said, "Protego" she cried breathlessly.

As a blue shield blossomed around both herself and Draco, Lucius was on the ground, rolling in pain.

Interesting, Hermione thought, the shield reflects the spell that is cast upon it.

Without a word, Hermione turned around and left the alley.

Draco caught only a glimpse of the brown bushy hair of his savior, Granger? He thought.
