What Dreams May Come

Remus woke up in his bed. In Grimmauld Place. He knew the texture of the sheets. His mind groped for some memory, some recurrence as to why he was there before he even attempted to open his eyes. Warm breath washed across his face, slightly annoying him. It smelled rancid. Then strands of hair fell, tickling him lightly on the face. This was definitely not the ideal wake up call for him. He'd shunned any contact with everyone since...since Sirius had ... fallen. He opened one eye, letting out a soft groan. "Go away..." he murmured softly, vision blurred.

"You don't mean that." a voice replied softly. And Remus had to suppress a gasp. No, it couldn't be him. Never. He had fallen. He swallowed, opening his other eye and immediately recognizing the gray blue eyes that stared back at him. Sirius.

"You're not there. I'm dreaming." Remus replied, biting his lip slightly, "I'm being hopeful again. They hit me harder than I thought out in the town.." he said quickly. He had been in a fight the last time he was awaked. The Order had gone out, investigating a sighting. They had been ambushed.

"Yes, I am." he replied to Remus simply, shortly, then sat on the bed beside him. Remus looked him over uncertainly, then placed a hand on his lost friends shoulder. It was solid. He gave a light smile. "You are there...but... how?"

"Do you really need to ask? I'm back, that's all there is to it." Sirius grinned, his old, cocky self. Remus laughed shortly. The first time he had done so since he had believed Sirius to be dead. This was his release. Things were back to normal. "You've been asleep so long, we thought you'd never wake up. Voldemort's been defeated." Sirius announced, grinning. Remus nodded. How could he not believe Sirius? he was too happy to question or argue.

"Will he ever...come back to us?" Tonks questioned softly, looking at the once strong man that sat on the bed, talking to himself amiably. He'd been caught, the second of the order to fall in three months. Things weren't looking up for the Order. They'd found Remus a few days ago, totally unconscious. He'd only woken moments ago. Then he started talking to the air. He thought someone was there. Tonks shuddered slightly. How horrible, lost in his own land where there was nothing wrong.

"It's just like the Longbottoms. He's been tortured to insanity. But maybe it's better this way. He gets to escape the real pain." Dumbledore replied to the younger member quietly, shaking his head as Remus laughed, "All the better for those who can find peace in their dreams."
