A/N: This is a song fic. It's short. I'm sorry; it's not supposed to be
long. The song is "That's When I Love You" by Aslyn.
She couldn't believe she'd never seen it before. She'd lived next door to Seth Cohen for 16 years, and yet she'd never seen him that way. Actually she hadn't seen him much at all. From across the ballroom she could see him talking to someone, probably an adult. She couldn't tell.
*** When you have to look away,
When you don't have much to say,
That's when I love you,
I love you, just that way. ***
16 years he'd been there. He'd always been there, and she'd always ignored him. She figured he was just a dorky, teenage boy. Not cool enough for her or her friends. Not cool enough for anyone. She'd come to see him differently of late. She found him sweet, and cute, hundred times more than any other guy in Orange County. He approached.
"Hey Marissa---great party, are you havin'---fun?" He asked in staccato like fashion.
"Yeah, I am Seth." She smiled and so did he.
*** To hear you stumble when you speak,
Or see you walk with two left feet,
That's when I love you,
I love you, endlessly. ***
"So---how have you been?" He asked.
"I've been all right. How about you?"
"Good, I suppose." He sipped from his cup.
The more time she spent with him, the more she realized how much she was attracted to him. He was too blind to see her though. The poor boy was infatuated with Summer. Summer would never see how great he is, never appreciate him. It sounded ridiculous, but in the space of one summer she'd come to realize how wrong everyone was about him. He really wasn't that different. He was actually pretty cool, and really sweet. How could any girl resist him? Summer really did live up to her reputation of air headedness sometimes.
*** Baby I love you,
I love you anyway,
Here's my promise made tonight,
You can count me for life, ***
It was the end of the party, and she had no ride. She sat outside on the steps of the ballroom. It was a cold fall evening. Wrapping her coat around her a little bit, she scrunched down farther into a ball. Seth came bounding out the doors, completely ignoring her. He got about twenty feet away and turned around.
"Marissa!?" He yelled.
"Yeah?" She replied.
"You need a ride home?"
"Really?" She asked surprised.
"Yeah, I think I might know where you live." He smiled. She ran to catch up to him. He opened the door of his father's black SUV for her. She got in and he got in on the other side. The ride home was silent.
"How are things with Summer?" She asked cautiously.
"Oh you know---non-existent." He took his eyes off the road to smile at her. Somehow she felt that she might just have a chance with him.
