Blurry
Her vision is blurry. The scene in front of her seems slowed, as if watching some sort of instant replay on TV. She's drunk. She drinks to get away. And she needs to get away a lot. She wished she didn't have to get away. It doesn't matter now. She's pretty much what one would consider an alcoholic. Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic, right? Her world isn't as perfect as it seems like it should be.
Her family is now too far in debt for the average person to even imagine. Her father kept secrets from her family that were devastating, to say the very least. Her mother holds up a shield, a façade that finally broke upon the revelation of her father's secret. They might not have a place to live anymore. They might not even stay married anymore. She had heard the whispers and rumors that had quickly begun to make their way around Newport. Her family life is in shambles.
Her social life isn't much better. Her best friend is really nothing like her. She's cynical and a complainer. She's a narcissistic, spoiled brat, and she fawns over both her ex-boyfriend, and her current crush. Her ex-boyfriend cheated on her, most likely more times than she was aware of. There was no telling why he had been with her. Her social standing, her name, a conquest? She doesn't know.
The new boy-next-door is perfect for her, but he also plays into her drinking. She wants him; he wants her. But her mother won't go for it. Her ex-boyfriend won't go for it. His past is enough to make most people cringe, but not Marissa. No, Marissa sees past that. Even with blurry vision. Even if she is drunk. She sees through it, all right. It's a shame she can't do anything about it.
