Soldier
James hid behind the bin, his heart pounding and his orders replaying in his head. 'Kill the next person, wearing sunglasses, who walks past your post.'
His first murder assignment for the dark side. Merlin, if he stuffed this up he would get kicked out of the inner ring. He would be demoted to a mere recruit, and his family needed the money that this job provided. He knew that if he lost his job, they would be evicted from their home. But the fact that soon he would kill someone, someone placed on this earth by God, increased his fear and shame. Perhaps the person had a family as well, a spouse and children who waited at their home, shaking with fear, praying that they would return to them that day, just the same as his family. Perhaps they had a mother and father, who quivered every time the phone rang, anticipating the call that would release the news that their child had died. Maybe their family was about to be evicted from their home as well, and their job was the only source of income they had. If James completed his assignment today their worst fears would be true. If James didn't complete his assignment though, his family would be evicted, he would lose his job and he and his family would be bereft, forced to live on the streets.
There was a quick flash of colour, and James cautiously looked out from his hiding spot. There she was. A woman of medium height, red hair and the incriminating sunglasses. The woman he would murder.
For a second James faltered, wishing he had never joined the Death Eater ranks. Working as a member of the Order of the Phoenix would be better than this.
Gathering his nerve, James drew his wand and aimed as the woman turned around, looking for the person she was supposed to be meeting. "Avada Kedavra!" he cried.
The woman had just finished turning, and was staring at him in horror, before dying. James hesitated for a second, before rushing out to see who it was. Lily, his perfect wife's face stared up at him.
His precious Lily. He had been forced to kill his wife, no doubt at Voldermort's amusement. His perfect Lily, his rival and best friend. Well the family would still be living with his salary, but the knowledge of the person he had to kill for that would always reside within James' mind, heart and soul.
He gave into tears then and held his dead wife's body tightly as he struggled to deal with his deed.
Everything has a price.
