Fallen blossoms so they lie

Hearts aflutter

When you go by

Time's a-wasting

Mirrors breaking

And a life-

A lie.

"Did you mean for it to happen? Did you?"

The demon prince laughed at his enemy's display of agitation. "Come now, surely coincidences happen sometimes."

His companion glared at him through furious, beautiful violet eyes.

"Or….maybe not," added the prince as an afterthought.

The attack had come as a surprise. Hakkai and Goku had left to stock up on their incessantly-depleting food supply, while the redhead had rambled off to "find me a nice lay tonight," as he put it so tastefully. Sanzo, therefore, was left to fend for himself, and he was definitely not prepared for such an ambush. The four of them had let their guard down- things had begun to ease up a bit and they were all loosening up, and Kougaiji had, like a true strategist, struck while their guard was down, and resistance, negligible.

Well, close to negligible at least.

Kougaiji looked down at his captive, trying his best to hide the smirk that was threatening to spread over his features. He really didn't like to gloat over his victories, but this one had to cap it all. He, Prince Kougaiji, had succeeded in catching himself a Sanzo, and not just any Sanzo at that. He had caught him a certain rude, foul-mouthed, short-fused monk who smoked nicotine like there was no tomorrow and drank like it was tomorrow. He had caught Genjo Sanzo.

"What're you laughing at, youkai?" the last word was uttered with such distaste that it offended the prince and wiped the smirk off his face. For the moment.

"Tell me Sanzo," began the prince, his eyes narrowing dangerously as he studied his prey, "what is it about us that commands such…..such….displeasure?"

"Displeasure?" Sanzo smirked contemptuously, "disgust should suffice better. After all, I wouldn't want to be leading you on in any way."

The demon prince hissed and grabbed the blonde by the scruff of his neck. "You listen to me monk, don't you DARE degrade my kind."

"And if I insist?"

Kougaiji snarled, baring his fangs. "Then I'll make sure you regret it, Sanzo-sama."

"Ne Hakkai, where's Sanzo? He was here when we left…" asked Goku doubtfully, surveying the vacant room.

"I'm sure Sanzo wanted to get some fresh air, or maybe have a smoke or two…you needn't worry about him, Goku. Sanzo can take care of himself."

"Aa. Demo, Sanzo always seems to land himself in trouble very often. And I worry," golden eyes stared up cutely at the brunette, who found himself reaching out to pat Goku on the head.

"Saa naa….you may be right, but Sanzo's a tough one. It'll take a lot to kill him," he said by way of consolation.

"Aa, wakateruu…." Goku's eyes lighted up and he wagged an imaginary tail, "demo…."

"Goku," chided Hakkai gently, "didn't I just tell you not to worry about Sanzo? I'm sure he's okay. He's very strong."

The boy nodded vigorously, all worries forgotten.

Oddly enough, a certain monk wasn't feeling too strong at that moment.

"What's the matter? Too weak to fight?" taunted the deep baritone that was Kougaiji.

"Teme…." Sanzo feebly tried to essay a punch at the demon, but the other stepped swiftly aside, catching the monk just as he fell forward, no longer able to hold himself up out of sheer exhaustion.

"I attribute this to a weakness in the human genome?"

Sanzo mumbled something incoherent into his chest and Kouagaiji laughed.

            "Defending your own….species. How cute."
