Making Amends
Prologue
"Please, don't go," he pleaded, gently but firmly grabbing my arm. "We'll work it out...I love you."
I don't know why I didn't just shove him away; it must have been the pleading tone he was using. Seto Kaiba never begs because he thinks it makes him look weak; yet he was doing it now. I had no choice but to look directly into those confident, cobalt blue eyes that I had grown to love; now there seemed to be something different about them. When I had first met him, those eyes had always held a cold, icy death glare; now they were soft, worried looking, sorrowful almost.
Unconciously, my chocolate brown eyes met his and I held that gaze, searching in his eyes for any chance that there was still something between us. In the end, it was me who looked away first, pulling my arm roughly from his grasp. My eyes had started to fill with tears because when I had looked into those deep, blue eyes, it brought back all the memories that we had shared. All of them had flashed before my eyes in an instant. It hurt to remember everything that had happened, but it would be harder and hurt more to forget it.
Despite his protests, I strode out of the room without looking back. I knew that if I looked back, I would be unable to leave because I still had feeling for him. He would have helped me if I had let him, but for some reason, it felt like something I should do alone. After the door slammed shut behind me, I ran down the hall toward the elevator.
About half-way there, I tripped over the carpet and fell on my chest. The tears I had been trying to hide streamed freely down my face as I managed to pull myself to a sitting position. I won't lie to you; it felt good to cry. It was as if I was washing away all my troubles and starting anew. Eventually, I ran out of tears and I wiped my red eyes on my sleeve, trying to hide any evidence that I had been crying.
I checked to see if Kaiba was coming but he had gone looking for me in another area of the building. I hurried to the elevator, and pressed the buttons for the lobby. Once I reached the lobby and made my way outside,I went to my car. As I sped away from KaibaCorp, I had only one question in my mind: Why did this have to happen to me?
