Blame it on Mars
A/N: Paula unknowingly gave me the idea for this fic so I'm dedicating it to her. The later parts I got the inspiration from the Martian Race by Gregory Benford. I suggest you read it if you can, it's very good, though I think it could do with a slightly better ending.
SG-1 were in the 'gate room awaiting the Stargate's activation to allow them to go to P5X 984. It was taking a long time to dial up and apparently there was a problem so Major Carter went up to the control room to try and sort it out. After five minutes SG-1 was getting fed up of waiting so they all climbed up to the control room to see what was going on.
"Major, report."
"Well Sir, the 'gate doesn't seem to want to connect to P5X 984. There could be a few reasons and as we won't override the 'gate's safety features any more it looks like we won't be going."
"What could it be?"
"Well, we could be in the situation that a sun somewhere has blocked the wormhole's path, or it could be something else yet to be found."
"Blame it on Mars."
"Sir?"
"Blame it on Mars. Mars is extraordinarily close so perhaps it could be something to do with that."
"Sir, I very much doubt it."
"I don't."
"I realise that Sir."
At this point Hammond decided to jump in and stop the argument.
"Major, try to dial up somewhere else on the same side of Earth."
"Yes Sir."
Again, the 'gate wouldn't engage.
"Now try somewhere the other side."
The 'gate engaged and Jack had a very smug look on his face.
"Sir, I'm going to have to do some experiments on this to determine the reason the 'gate won't engage."
"Major, we've already found the reason. As Colonel O'Neill says, blame it on Mars."
"But."
"We know that it is Mars causing our problems, but we don't know how. That is where you come in Major."
"Yes Sir."
"SG-1, you mission has been postponed until later notice."
SG-1 trooped out of the control room to put their things away again.
"So Carter, I was right."
"Yes Sir."
"Be a bit more happy for me!"
"Jack!"
"Shut up Daniel."
"O'Neill."
"Shut up Teal'C."
They both did as they were told and prepared to face the wrath that was O'Neill when he was happy. Sam sighed. It was going to be a long day.
