His Mother's Eyes
How delicate the boundary between love and hate;
How easy to mistake the last and learn the truth too late;
How hard to bear what brings to mind mistakes that we despise;
For when I look into his face I see his mother's eyes.
She tried to seal away my past; she tried to end my strife;
But all the Dark Lord's contracts have been always made for life.
My love married my enemy and they sought my lord's demise;
And when I look into his face I see his mother's eyes.
Poor child. The Dark Lord killed them both and left him all alone.
I should not see her mettle within temper tantrums thrown.
I should not feel betrayal when there's naught but childish lies,
But when I look into his face I see his mother's eyes.
Now how am I to deal with this rebellion in my soul?
I cannot treat him fairly when my own heart is not whole.
I truly wish to help him, but I'm not so strong nor wise;
For when I look into his face I see his mother's eyes.
Only, his mother's eyes.

~*^_^*~: Wow. This is a terrible tangent for me, considering I normally write anime-related fanfiction, but it occurred to be out of the blue and I decided to write it. In case you didn't know, this poem is shamelessly stolen and modified from within Mercedes Lackey's Herald trilogy, more specifically the third book, whatever it was titled. I actually can't recall it, although this particular poem remained ingrained in my memory.
So to give an official disclaimer: I don't own the rights to any characters, events, or copied stanzas in this poem. They belong to JK Rowling and Mercedes Lackey respectively. I would also like to add that while Lackey's prose is positively horrendous, her poetry is awesome so check out every third book in her trilogies, flip to the back, and then read them. The content of the novel is better left untouched.
I don't normally ask this, but please review.
