Too late. I was too late.
Godric's Hollow was reduced to ashes. I stumbled from my bike, tears falling down my face. As I crossed the doorway of the house, a pair of unseeing green eyes met my own. Lily Potter lay dead on the floor, her eyes wide and frightened.
Too late.
I waded on through the rubbles, hoping, praying, that he had escaped. I tripped on a piece of stone and looked down at my feet. I couldn't bear to keep looking, but I had to. I had to know. I forged on and nearly choked on my tears. Laying on top of the broken wood and crushed stone, was my best friend. His wand was still gripped in his hand and his eyes were determined.
Too late.
I had failed him. I hadn't been able to fulfill his final request. In my own way I had turned him over to the enemy.
I had been too late to save him.
Water drops fell on his face and I didn't even bother to wipe my eyes. He was gone, lost. I was my fault. All my fault. I kneeled beside him and took his hand. "I'm so sorry James. I was too late. Too late."
Much too late. It had been too late as soon as I had turned his safety over to Peter. Too late.
A sigh distracted me from my best friend's body and I turned my head towards the sound. Hagrid stood there with regret in his eyes. "I'm sorry Sirius. I'm sorry you found out this way. But it's too late to save him. Let him go."
His words echoed in my head. I was too late. I couldn't save him. Couldn't be there for him. Let him go? Let him go?! It was too late for that to.
"He's gone Hagrid." My voice cracked and I looked away again. Hagrid sighed again and looked at the blankets in his arms. For the fist time I was aware of the bundle. "What is that Hagrid?"
Too late for James. Too late for everything.
"Er, it's Harry." I gasped. How? Why not James?
"How Hagrid?" Hagrid shrugged and I reached for Harry. "I have to take him. He's my godson. I'm meant to take care of him."
Too late for James, but Harry? Maybe there was time.
Hagrid looked at me suspiciously and I remembered that the whole world thought I was his Secret Keeper. "No Hagrid! It wasn't me! It was him. It was Peter. I didn't do it. You cant believe that!"
Too late to save him. Too late.
"I've got me orders. I'm to take 'im ta Dumbledore."
"But Hagrid. I'm his godfather. He's all I have left." I looked at Hagrid desperately, but Hagrid shook his head. "Take my bike then. I don't need it anymore."
I was too late to save James. Too late for Harry. Just too late.
Hagrid nodded and followed me back to my bike. I stared at him as he shrank into a speck in the sky.
Too late. Peter would pay. Oh how he would pay. I was too late for James, but Peter, Peter would pay.
