Hunting For A Hero: A Harry Potter Fanfiction

Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter or any of its associated characters: all rights belong to JK Rowling. I do not own any crossover references used in the story: all rights belong to their original creators. I do own any OC spells explained at the end of a chapter.

Plot: Something really strange happened to Harry, but nobody can figure out why it happened: was it the Killing Curse? His birth? His legacy? Or is it the hands of Fate working in very unusual ways? Whatever it is, Harry knows this much: he's going to become the Alpha of his own destiny.

Author's Note: So, here we have a pretty classic theme, but with a spin on it that, to be honest, I don't know where it came from, but I decided to go ahead with it all the same, so, let's see what sort of fun we can have, eh?

Prologue: Déjà Vu All Over Again

"I'm afraid I must admit to some confusion upon receiving your letter, Professor Dumbledore."

Déjà vu.

It was a part of human life that Albus Dumbledore had always heard of, but, until that fated day, he had never guessed that he would have to admit to going through such an ordeal, only to come out on the other side feeling confused, scared and praying to the Powers that history really wasn't about to repeat itself.

Not until he heard the exact same words from the lips of a considerate-looking lady, as she accompanied him up the stairs of an ordinary-looking children's home – which it was known as since, according to said lady, they hated using the word orphanage – as they made their way to a room where Dumbledore's quarry waited.

"In all the years he's been here…"

"Let me guess," said Dumbledore nervously, a small part of him dreading the answer, even as he asked the question, "Harry has never had so much as a visitor, much less one whom claims they are a friend of the family?"

"Well…err…yes, exactly," said the woman, a Mrs Angela White, as she led him along a corridor off the staircase while she continued, "Of course, he's not what you'd call a loner, nor is he a rude or aggressive young man, mind you. However, when he tries, and he does try, but…well, the local children and their families are…shall we say, not too welcoming to our charges, due to their…unfortunate circumstances?"

"And…and Harry?" asked Dumbledore, the nerves vanishing, but only slightly, from his voice as he asked, "What can you tell me about him, Mrs White? You said he's not a loner, nor rude or aggressive; does that mean he has friends? Associates? Perhaps a close-knit group?"

"Well," admitted the dark-skinned lady, tucking a strand of her auburn hair behind one ear as she explained, "Honestly, Harry tries to help others, but, at the same time…I wouldn't say he has a close-knit group; I mean, there is a gentleman in the nearby village whom Harry goes, mostly once a month, to earn a little pocket money in return for small favours and chores. However, despite the clearly-friendly attitude between them, I was a little shocked to find that neither Harry nor this gentleman had any desires of making this a permanent arrangement between them."

"This…gentleman?" asked Dumbledore, as they stopped outside a door that, to his curiosity, seemed to be decorated with a lunar calendar, as well as a silver plaque with the boy's name engraved into it.

Narrowing his eyes in curiosity, Dumbledore looked to Mrs White as he asked, "Can you…would you be so kind as to tell me his name? Perhaps we might have a little chat after I have talked with Harry. Find out a little more about him."

"Actually," said Mrs White suddenly, before she indicated the door to the room, which she then knocked on as she explained, "It's the strangest thing, Professor Dumbledore, but, when he heard Harry was going to have a visitor, this man asked my permission to talk with you here with Harry. Seeing as how the trust between them borders on fatherly, if not brotherly, I…I couldn't refuse, so…if you'll excuse me, I'll leave you to introduce yourself to them both: if you need any further help, you know where my office is."

Thanking her, Dumbledore watched the woman leave before, to his surprise, once Mrs White was gone, the door to Harry's room opened.

When Dumbledore turned to speak to the boy, if not his companion, his eyes widened when, to his shock, he found he not only knew the man whom had earned Harry's favour.

He also knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, why the man insisted that he wasn't guardianship material, and why Harry might have agreed.

"Hello, Albus," said Remus Lupin, his green eyes looking at Dumbledore with a mixture of inevitability and caution as he opened the door a little wider, before indicating for Dumbledore to step inside as he went on.

"You'd better come in: something tells me we have a lot to discuss."

Whoa, talk about mysteriously-spooky: history seemed to repeat itself, right up to the point where the door opened, but why is Harry even in an orphanage in the first place?

Also, blimey: Remus is his friend from the village? What could this mean for our hero?

Surely, it's not all just one big bad coincidence, is it?

Keep Reading to Find Out

Next Chapter: Dumbledore sees what's become of Harry, while Remus fills in a few missing blanks about the past ten years, one of which leaves a very fearful taste in Albus' mouth as, for the first time in ten years, he realises what he must now do to protect the boy further, and it isn't lead him to his death;
