Flowers in the Dark // Prologue

Author's Note:

Waaah! Thank you so much for taking the time to read my fanfic. *bows* While reading, you'll notice that it's a bit AU, and some characters will be well......out of character. I know that it's good to take good AND bad criticism, but please, if you're going to comment, make it constructive criticism and not just flaming. (You'll make me cry...) Thank you and please enjoy the story!

Raine's eyelids fluttered as a steady throb seeped into her temples and needles of pain struck her body.

Where was she?

Her mind raced with a blur of twisting thoughts as a sick feeling filled her insides and churned, like a rock had fallen into her chest.

The slanted roof of an enormous house loomed over her, pulling anything near it into a shadow. Though there was enough light to see a dozen shallow ruts left in the ground from tips and heels of boots moving across the dirt, and the blood splatter from sword meeting flesh.

Her breathing quickened and her limbs shook underneath the weight of her body, as she slowly rose to her feet. The last few moments of memory played themselves in her mind over and over.

The clear clang of cold steel and bright flashes of light.

Heavy breathing and feet moving quickly across the dirt.

They circle each other for the third time.

The last time.

Raine had never seen her father like that before, breathing through his teeth with rage and pushing himself to the limit to protect his wife and child. His opponent however, looked like a madman, blood streaming down his face and parted by a disgustingly sadistic smile.

Tears streamed down Raine's face and she let herself fall to her knees. She was now completely alone. Completely and utterly alone. The only person two who had ever cared for her.....the only family she had....her mother and father, were now dead.
