Chapter 7

Back in 1865, Rebecca was heading back to the attic to retrieve her cousin's guests. They hadn't eaten much for breakfast. Maybe a good luncheon would do them good. She heard Lacey's comment on wanting to go to the park as she climbed the stairs. She heard their steps echoing as they walked into the hall. When she reached the upper floor, she expected them to be halfway to her, but they weren't. There was no sound at all.

Puzzled, Rebecca headed to the attic storeroom. When she pushed open the door, she saw a top spinning on a trunk. All around it, the room looked to be bending on itself. Rebecca pulled back to the open door for support. The dizzying sight of a room, moving like a reflection in rippling water unnerved her. When the top stopped spinning, the effect ended.

Rebecca stared at the top. That is no child's toy. Rebecca walked in, touched it. It was warm to the touch. This is the disk the Starman gave Jules just a few months ago. It should be in Paris with him. When did it get put in here? How did it get in the attic one-hundred years into the future? Rebecca picked it up and shoved it into a cloth pouch. It doesn't matter how. This thing is dangerous. Rebecca held up the bag. Phileas's great grandchildren are, hopefully, back where they belong. I am not letting that happen again. This and the one in Paris needs to be in a vault somewhere so no one can accidentally be snatched across time again.
