"That's what you do when you love someone right?"
Sam gave Miguel a look of genuine surprise. "You've never said that before." she pointed out with a hesitantly excited look.
That was true. Miguel never told Sam he loved her but deep down he had always known it hadn't he? He had never moved on from her. When they broke up last year, he thought he was over her when he got together with Tory, but he had only been rebounding. It had not been fair for him to do that to Tory.
Just like it had not been fair to kiss that girl last night.
"Well uh... well I do." he admitted with a nervous smile, looking at the ground before he could muster the courage to look Sam in the eyes.
Sam looked as if she couldn't believe what she just heard and opened her mouth to say something but then she just sighed and looked at the ground.
"I.. I'm sorry... but I don't think we can get back together." Sam told him.
Hearing that made Miguel's heart drop.
This time it was Miguel who opened his mouth to just sigh. He thought about asking her for one more chance. But he stopped because he knew that would be pointless. Sam was serious about this and Miguel thought he knew why.
She was afraid to trust him after she saw him kiss that girl.
"Yeah I... I understand." Miguel told her.
Sam moved her hand out to give him back the octopus necklace, but he shook his head. "You can keep it." he told her. Risking a smile, he told her, "I bought it for you, so you should have it."
She gave him a small smile back. "Thank you."
Miguel nodded and gave her a pat on the back as he walked off. He was really hurting but it was not as bad as it felt that evening at Miyagi-Do when he left crying.
"Yo Miguel."
He turned around and saw Hawk and Demetri walking up to him.
"Well that's not the face of someone celebrating because they took Voldemort down." Demetri commented. "It sounds like Harry Potter got dumped by Ginny."
Demetri had a look of sympathy on his face and patted Miguel on the back.
"What makes me Harry Potter?" Miguel asked.
He couldn't believe that was the first thing he said but it was what came to his mind first.
"Because you're a hero with natural leadership skills." Hawk said without missing a beat.
Miguel didn't quite know how to respond to that, so he just said, "Well Sam and I are done."
"Oh I'm sorry man. That sucks. Especially after we just had our big victory." Hawk said sympathetically.
That was a far cry from last year when Hawk had just told Miguel to move on and that he could have anyone he wanted since he was the champ at the time.
To be honest, Miguel might have preferred the same encouragement. He didn't like pity.
But he definitely appreciated that Hawk and Demetri were here for him.
"So what happened? Did she just not want to get back together?" Demetri asked curiously.
"She did… but last night she saw me kissing a girl at the party we threw. You should have seen the look on her face… I broke her heart and now I think she's afraid to trust me." Miguel admitted with a sigh as he stared at the ground.
He just couldn't seem to get it right when it came to girls and their feelings.
He didn't get it right when he accidentally hit Sam at the canyon party last year, he didn't get it right when he got with Tory even though he wasn't over Sam, he didn't get it right when he hurt Tory by kissing Sam that night at Moon's party, he didn't get it right when he told Tory nobody else got hurt by what happened to him at school and making her think he thought she was crazy, he didn't get it right by not thinking about how Sam was feeling at prom when Robby and Tory showed up and snapping at her after they fell in the pool at the afterparty, he didn't get it right when he bought a bus ticket to Mexico during Sam and Tory's match and not being there to support Sam and he definitely didn't get it right when he kissed that girl he just met last night, causing Sam to leave the party heartbroken.
Neither Hawk or Demetri looked like they knew what to say and Miguel couldn't think of what to say either, so he looked around and saw Robby and Tory kissing.
His rivalry both Robby and Tory seemed to be over so there was nothing to stop him from hoping things would work out for them.
It was a pretty big shocker for Miguel tonight when Tory had joined their side. Then again, how many times had he spoken to Tory lately to have any insight to what was going on with her?
Ever since waking up from his coma, he had spoken to Tory at the Sushi restaurant. That was the only time they had an actual conversation. The fight at Sam's, The confrontation at the drive-in, prom, the waterpark. Those weren't really conversations.
Wow. So Miguel and Tory had only properly spoken once since the school fight, even though Miguel cheating on Tory had pretty much caused a lot of things to escalate to the point that they had?
That conversation hadn't even been a great one. Miguel had made Tory think that he thought her crazy. He hadn't even apologised for cheating on her.
Now that he thought about it, he still hadn't.
His stomach was full of guilt now. He should definitely apologise once he got a chance.
Miguel saw his mother and Sensei Lawrence talking happily. Sensei looked pretty bad. He should go see what that's about.
"I'll catch up with you guys in a little bit." he told his friends before walking over to his mother and sensei.
Before Miguel could ask Sensei Lawrence what happened, his eyes were drawn to something around his mother's finger.
"Is that…?" Miguel couldn't even finish and looked at them both for an answer. The two of them had huge smiles on their faces and were holding hands.
His mother and Sensei Lawrence, the man he saw as a father for so long, were engaged.
"Holy shit!" Miguel screamed out, just as he had when he found out Sensei and his mother were going to have a baby.
