~ Smooth Like Ice ~
Itachi typically wasn't one to participate in college events the whole four years he's attended Konoha University. However this was a little different and Sasuke begged. This wasn't the typical house party. Thankfully the social committee actually put together an event that wasn't focused on alcohol and orgy opportunities. No, this was a roller skating event. Most people didn't know he was a master at roller skating after working at the local roller stink during high school. He wasn't planning to go even with Sasuke's cute begging but a small part of him was wondering if she would show up. She was always on his mind since he first saw her at the rink.
It was a rule the employees weren't allowed on the floor with the public and especially not allowed to flirt with customers. Itachi thankfully would be allowed to work the DJ booth on the busy nights to keep away from all the females trying to get his number or his employee discount… but mostly his number. One day during his senior year a pink haired girl came in and tore up the rink in a way he never saw before. She was not just good at skating but she danced and not just little movements but professional, in sync with the beat. He was entranced every time she showed up. He never got a good look at her face since her short pink hair was always all over the place when she skated.
You would think pink hair would be easy to find but she managed to disappear when his shift ended and he never saw her in public. For a while his eyes caught on all the items that could've been the same pink as her hair. She was there every Friday in time for DJ night for 5 months. When the second semester started, she was never seen again. He wondered if maybe they were in the same grade and she was studying for her end of year finals. Even he was more busy in his last semester trying to get all his final projects and papers together plus applying to different colleges.
He decided on Konoha University to stay close to Sasuke. Sasuke didn't ask him to stay close but his mother had just opened a small craft business and his father was always away on business trips. Itachi knew Sasuke would be alone. He took it upon himself to make sure he was home every night to cook Sasuke dinner and spend time with him. On days Itachi couldn't make it due to late night projects, he would send Shisui.
After a while he began to wonder if the pink haired girl would go to the same school. She didn't look much younger than him, maybe around Sasuke's age. One day he had stubley asked Sasuke if anyone in his school had pink hair to which his little brother responded no. Dejected, Itachi tried to stop thinking about her. Fast forward 2 years and he sees her pink colored hair. Her hair is longer now, a few inches past her shoulders. She is walking around with an advisor, his friend Konan, and two older people who look like her parents. He hears her laugh and feels his heart flutter for a moment before remembering he was already running late to his mid-semester final. Begrudgingly he turned away and didn't see her again. All Konan would tell him is that her name was Sakura and she was starting in the Spring.
He never saw her on campus which made him think maybe she chose a different university to attend. People changed their minds all the time. Another 2 years passed. He had dropped off papers to his chemistry teacher in the medical building last week and heard her laugh outside the window. His head snapped over to catch a glimpse of her and saw her now lower back length hair floating in the wind. He raced out of the classroom and down the 2 flights of stairs. Once he was outside, breathing heavy from the sudden movement, he looked around everywhere to see she was gone again. Today while broodingly eating his onigiri, Sasuke mentioned the skate night the college was hosting. Sasuke took his frozen movements as an immediate no and started to beg him to go.
Sasuke was the only one who knew how much he loved roller skating. Even after Itachi went to college, he would take Sasuke skating around the park with him on weekends. He felt the activity really helped Sasuke open up more about his real feelings since half the time Sasuke was focusing more on not falling and not the truth falling out of his mouth.
Before long the night was here, Itachi had just got on the floor to start skating around leisurely. He had tied his hair into a bun to make sure it wouldn't get in his way as he watched the crowds of people come in. He wondered if he missed the memo as more people came in dressed in retro skate wear. Not that he cared how he looked but he hoped she didn't think he was lazy in his jeans and fitted long sleeve black shirt. His metal necklace and watch gleamed when the revolving lights would catch on him. He even wore his favorite cologne that smelled of black cardamom, smoky vanilla, and a hint of musk (Yes, it was from the men's collection at bath and body works but his mom gave it to him for Christmas last year. He liked it. Sue him. Good luck though, Itachi was mastering Law).
Shisui skated up and lightly bumped shoulders with him. "Any sight of the mysterious beauty?" He asked quietly. Sasuke wasn't the only one who Itachi skated with at the park. Shisui was almost as good as himself. Itachi let out a deep sigh. "Not yet." Shisui chuckled and clasped his shoulder. "Don't get down baby cousin, the night is young. Now if you'll excuse me, I plan to embarrass Sasuke and steal the hottie he's talking to. Bye!" Before Itachi could even tell Shisui to leave his brother alone, Shisui shot off. Rolling his eyes, Itachi continued his laps around the rink.
It had been 2 hours. The time was nearing 9 pm and although the event was until 2 am, Itachi had another test tomorrow and was hoping to not be out too late. He sincerely hoped she would show up soon. He spent his time on and off the floor, occasionally eating popcorn with Shisui and watching Sasuke get hit on by 95% of the female population. A good 10% were under 10 years old… But luckily he taught Sasuke well and he was a gentleman while turning the younger girls down, often with a blush of his own.
Itachi stretched and decided to do another couple laps to get his blood flowing again. Most people didn't crowd him as they thought he was dark and unapproachable. All the girls he passed giggled and made comments of how well he smelled. Itachi sadly couldn't keep the slight blush off his face when a little girl with long black hair asked him to skate with her. He should've stayed on the bench but as a gentleman he agreed. Especially since it looked like she might fall at any moment. He could practically feel Shisui's laughter vibrating on his skin.
The little girl excitedly grabbed his hand and started to skate with him by her side. They were doing good for awhile, she had a hard time with turning but he taught her a trick and she was starting to get the hang of it.
"Hanabi!" a voice rang out and the little girl next to him whipped around and accidently skated in front of him. His eyes went wide as he tried to move her out of the way but it was too late for both of them, her skate was already caught with his. "HANABI!" Another voice yelled out that sounded familiar to him. As they were falling, he was able to switch their positions and "Hanabi" fell on him while he slammed into the hard wooden floor.
Hanabi apologized profusely as two women skated over to them. One looked like an older version of the younger girl and quickly grabbed Hanabi off of him and started asking questions a mile a minute to make sure she was okay. She reminded him of himself with a young Sasuke. He looked over to the second female and felt his heart skip multiple beats in his chest. It was HER.
She was standing to his side, a look of concern in her beautiful green eyes. "Are you okay?" She said softly, offering her hand to him. He took a moment to answer as he was taking her in. Her skin was a smooth cream, her pink hair in two space buns with a curled strand on either side of her face. She had light makeup on around her eyes and shiny pink lip gloss on her lips. The mascara and eyeliner made her eyes pop. The diamonds on her large hoop earrings sparkled when the lights went over her face. He blinked multiple times to focus on responding to her.
"I- Uh- I'm fine. Thank you." He grabbed her hand and was surprised to find they were a little rougher than he imagined. Still soft but he could feel thicker skin on her finger pads. She helped him up and once they were standing, he couldn't stop staring. Surprisingly, the top of her head came up to his mouth. She was dressed up a pink cropped bomber jacket, a black laced crop top underneath, dark blue high waisted jean shorts, and over the knee black sport socks with three white stripes at the top. Of course she had on her black and rainbow skates with the light up wheels she used when she skated in highschool too. Looking at her made him feel like he fell into heaven but the pain in his ribs reminded him otherwise.
He winced and grabbed at his ribs, her eyes widened and her free hand went to his ribs too. "Let's go to the side and I'll take a look at them. I'm a medical major." He chuckled a little. That's why he never saw her. Medical students were housed on the opposite side of the university as himself. Even the buildings they learned in were on the opposite sides of the campus. She gave him a weird look but it turned into a smile at his own goofy grin being on his face. She giggled too and shook her head. "I hope you didn't hit your head too." She stated as they skated to the closest side of the rink. People stopped to let them off.
"I'm sorry, where are my manners? My name is Uchiha Itachi." He stated. He gently shook the hand of hers that was still in his. She blushed and let go of his hand after the shake. "My name is Haruno Sakura." She smiled at him. They got to the side and he sat slowly on the bench. "Can you lift your shirt for me?" She asked politely. Ever the good boy, he compiled without remark. Her fingers were gentle on his skin causing a shiver to run up his spine. "Sorry, cold hands. I should've warned you." He chucked. "It's fine. How does it look Doc?" She feigned a concerned sigh. "Well you have abs of steel, such a shame really." She laughed at her own joke. It was too cute to him, he smiled down at her huffing in his own laughter. "Nothing is cracked but they could very well be bruised. I recommend light work and icing them frequently." She pulled his shirt back down.
Her eyes clashed with his and they just stared at each other for a minute. "You look familiar Uchiha Itachi." A small smile found its way to his face at her words. Maybe she noticed him then too. "I used to work at this roller rink in highschool. I mostly worked at the DJ Booth." Her eyes widened in recognition. "Yes! That's right! I always knew when it was you in the booth. You played my favorite songs all the time. It was like you were in my playlist." He smiled wider at her and inched closer to her. Her smile bloomed at his movement and she continued. "I can't tell you how many times my friend tried to get your number. Do you remember an annoying blonde?" He did in fact remember a persistent blonde with a high ponytail trying to ambush him on multiple occasions. She was a level red threat. He nodded and a blush seeped onto her face. "She was trying to get your number for me. I told her to stop stalking you when I moved away."
She had moved. That makes sense. "What made you come back to Konoha?" he would keep her here all night if he could. He still couldn't figure out how he didn't see her come in. Must have been while he was watching Sasuke or skating with Hanabi. Hanabi. "Actually," he started before she could continue. "That little girl, Hanabi. Was she okay?" Sakura looked over him, to the other side of the rink. She grinned slyly. "Better than ever. Looks like your trip made her crush step up." She snickered behind her hand. Itachi looked over and saw Hanabi being fawned over by a brown haired boy. He smirked and looked back at her shaking his head. "Anything in the name of love." He sighed lightly.
"About your earlier question," She started, moving one of her strands behind her ear. "I actually didn't want to move away but my dad got a promotion in a neighboring nation. All of my AP classes were already online so moving wasn't an issue. My parents didn't want me going to college since I was only 15 at the time." He did the math in his head. "So that would make you 20. Right?" "21 actually. My birthday was in March. You?" He felt nervous. It was a little bit of a gap. "26 currently. 27 in June." She looked contemplative. "I supposed 6 years isn't really that bad." She said aloud. A moment passed before her face lit up with a deep red blush and her eyes looked at him with panic.
He smiled as he slipped his hand over hers, intertwining their fingers. "I don't think 6 is bad if you don't." He said quietly. She cleared her throat, a blush still bright on her face. He held her hand tighter as he stood up and she followed him onto the floor. They spent the whole night skating around each other and talking about everything. He briefly caught the time. 1:30 am. Well, so much for studying for that test. "Itachi?" she questioned as he stared at his watch. He looked up to see her beautiful eyes glistening up at him.
"There's this bar that sells the best boozy milkshakes up the road." He suggested. She threw her head back and laughed. "I actually know what you're talking about. I love their boozy milkshakes. Ino and I usually go there after tests and play pool. I happen to be quite a pool shark." Itachi smirked down at her. "I was taught by a renowned pool shark. I would be interested to see how you match up to me." She raised her eyebrows. "You sure you want to go home crying tonight Uchiha?" He wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her against him. "I'd like to see you try Haruno." Their eyes shined with the challenge and tension. "Wanna bet?" She asked, bringing her arms around his shoulders.
His eyes went between hers and her lips. "Careful Haruno. I might take it all from you." She giggled. "I'm a med student. All I have is a horrendous amount of debt, my dreams, and my heart." He smiled down at her. "Sounds good to me." he whispered on her lips before kissing her deeply.
The two went off into the night enjoying boozy milkshakes and beating each other at pool. In the end she won his loyalty and he won her heart. She already had his heart years ago anyway. After all, who needed to study when you had the best thing in the world in your arms already?
