So since everyone knows this episode and everyone has read AU fanfics about it, I decided to only write the changes to the episode and skip over the stuff that everybody already knew. And yes I know the title of the story is weird, I just couldn't think of anything better.
Sam winced slightly as he finished stitching up the wound on his arm, and he took a small sip from his beer now that he was done before rolling down his sleeve. He had just finished up dealing with a group of demons with Ruby, but one had gotten a lucky shot in with a knife before he could use his abilities on it. Ruby had offered to help him and with her look he knew the blond was suggesting they continue their recent arrangement but Sam was tired after weeks searching for the Trickster and simply wanted a break from everything. So he had driven to the nearest motel and was now looking forward drinking himself into a deep sleep, before resuming his search until Ruby tracks him down for more training.
Naturally he was pretty annoyed when he heard a phone ringing, and he had to search for about a minute to find the right one in his bag. He quickly recognized it has dad's and for a second he was tempted to ignore it as he couldn't afford to waste time on anyone who calls, but his curiosity won out in the end.
"Hello?"
"Oh...I'm sorry, I thought..." a young voice replied, sounding like a teenager. "This is John Winchester's phone right?"
"He can't come to the phone. Can I help you?"
"No, no I really...I need to talk to John." the kid said with panic which pretty much confirmed he was a civilian.
"Look, John's been dead for about two years. Who's this?" Sam asked, hoping that the kid would get to the point quickly.
"What?" the kid replied in shock, the tone of his voice surprising Sam with how much it sounded like he really cared. "He's dead?"
"Yeah, and again who is this? Because I've got stuff to do."
The kid was silent for a moment and Sam almost hanged up until he finally spoke. "My name's Adam Milligan. I'm his son."
Sam tightened his grip on the phone so much part of him worried he was going to break it and it was a struggle to keep his voice steady as he spoke. "I'm sorry, you're his what?"
"I'm his son and I need his help." the kid, Adam, explained while sounding like he was close to crying. "I'm sorry, you don't need to hear this. I'll just-"
"No! I mean," Sam interrupted, still trying to rain in his emotions. "Where are you? I worked with John and I could help."
"I live in Windom, it's in Minnesota. But it's fine, you really don't have to-"
"I can be there in about a day, I'll call you when I get there." Sam told him before hanging up, and then silently screamed into his clenched fists. He fell to his knees and continued his silent scream, his brain in complete freak out mode and completely numb to the entire world. Honestly this would have been the perfect time for something to try and kill him, he was so distracted literally anything could get the jump on him. However after who knows how long his breathing started to slow and he began to think clearly about his next move.
He was actually only ten hours away from Windom, but first he needed to do some research. He needed to learn as much as he could about this Adam Milligan so he knew exactly what he was walking into. Whether he was a monster or a human causing trouble, or even some creation of the Trickster, all he knew was that this kid was going to pay for messing with him.
The second Adam walked into the diner, the first thing Sam thought was that he looked a little like Dean. The thought only made him more angry which he forced himself to hide as Adam sat down and shook his hand, not flinching even a little at the touch of Sam's silver ring while the holy water he drank did nothing. He listened as the seventeen year old talked about his relationship with his "dad", how his mom Kate met him after he got injured in a hunting accident and when he was twelve he finally convinced her to call him. He listened as the kid, who was born when Sam was seven and met dad the same year he left for Stamford, explained how he had been spending the night at a friend's house and came home to find his mom missing while her nightstand had been tipped over like she had been attacked, and how it's been five days with no word where she's gone.
Adam was reluctant when Sam, against all the instincts telling him to just run and forget about this because he can't have a brother because his brother has been dead for seven months, asked to see his house. He ignored the anger when he saw a picture of dad having taken Adam to a baseball game, anger born from the fact that this was real and that John could have always been proper father but apparently Sam and Dean weren't enough for him to do that. He clenched and unclenched his fists while wishing he had something strong to drink and forget his feelings.
"Hey, are you ok?" Adam asked, looking at Sam with worry while glancing at his hands.
"I'm fine." he responded simply, and he hated himself for not ignoring the scratch marks on the floor. Scratch marks that anyone else would assume were nothing important, but to someone like him were clear evidence of someone being dragged under the bed while their fingernails dug into the floor. "Hey, help me move the bed."
Adam frowned but did as he was told, though Sam could tell he was beginning to become annoyed that his dad's co-worker was making him move stuff around in his house. The scratch marks led to a small vent and despite Adam's grunts of impatience he helped Sam remove it, and for a second he almost moved to do rock paper scissors before he remembered that this wasn't Dean. This was Adam, who apparently really was his brother but despite some similarities wasn't really Dean. So instead he pulled out his gun and a small flashlight from his jacket, ignoring Adam flinch in surprise and instead climbed down into the vent.
He found that crawling around inside a vent that might be home to a killer monster was actually preferable to having to spend anymore time with Adam, having to think about what it means that Adam exists, and the feelings it brought up in him. For over a month he's ignored everything through drinking, hunting and Ruby and even before that night numbed himself to everything but a burning desire for revenge. Now however he's been given a living breathing person who reminded him of all the things he didn't want to think about, and in another life he might have been genuinely excited about having a little brother. But that wasn't his life and if Sam was certain of anything, it was that once he found out what the hell was going on he was going to do everything he could to get away from Adam.
When he found the pieces of flesh and hair he sighed, crawled out of the vent and with fierce intensity told Adam to call the police and what not to tell them. Then he left to find out what was responsible for killing Adam's mom, while the image of his brother's horrified expression after he told him what he had found having been burned into Sam's mind. He went to the car as quickly as he could and drove as fast as he could to the library, having made sure to check it out when arriving in case he needed to go there. Two hours later he had gone through the newspapers until he found what he was looking for and all it took was to flash a badge to get the sheriff to tell him where he could find he processor.
"My name's Sam Winchester." he told the bartender, who's eyes widened with familiarity. "I need to know what you and my dad had been hunting in January 1990."
He looked around at the other customers, before gesturing for Sam to follow him while telling a waitress to take over for him. He led Sam to a back room and shut the door behind them
"What are you even doing here? Is your dad here as well?" Joe Barton questioned.
"My dad's dead. I'm here because Adam called me, and because something killed his mom."
"Christ. I heard that Adam called the police, saying something about Kate. That was you?" he asked with Sam nodded, growing impatient with this conversation. The sooner he found this monster, the sooner it will be dead and he can get back to his actual life. "Does Adam know you're his brother?"
"No, and he doesn't have to. Look, I searched his house and I couldn't find anything that could give me an idea about what could have killed her. The only leads I have is that something had been stealing bodies recently and whatever he was hunting back then, maybe it's come back and is looking for revenge."
"We dealt with that thing, John said so." Barton replied, but then shrugged in defeat at Sam's glare. "You know, your dad was nicer than you. He said it was something called a ghoul, it was feeding on corpses."
That didn't help at all since ghouls rarely went after the living though it would explain the stolen corpses, but he thanked Barton anyway and left in a hurry after exchanging numbers. He drove back to his motel, trying to figure out his next move. If this was the same thing that dad hunted when he was here and it was a ghoul, then all he needed to do was cut it's head off and burn the body to be certain it won't return in another eighteen years. His best best was to go to the cometary and see if he could find any evidence, and if not then look around town to see if anyone else has died. The point is that once whatever this thing is has been killed, he can get out of this town and never come back. He can forget about Adam and with any luck Adam will move on from his mother's death and live a normal life, he had mentioned at the diner that he wanted to go to med school so perhaps he would get lucky since he's not technically a Winchester.
Part of Sam did recoil at the idea of abandoning his brother and rejecting the chance at having his family back, but that part was quickly told to shut up by his common sense. Just because he and Adam shared the same family doesn't mean they were family, it simply meant that Sam had an obligation to make sure that whatever killed Adam's mom got what it deserved. He had nothing against him, yes he still felt anger when he thought about his dad in those photos and yes he was definitely jealous that dad actually celebrated Adam's birthdays, but he didn't hate Adam or anything like that and hoped things worked out for him. Sam just knew that nothing good could happen if he got too involved in Adam's life.
That's why he was tempted to keep driving when he saw Adam waiting by the door of his motel, a determined look on his face when he saw the Impala that told Sam that he wouldn't leave unless he was given answers or threatened with violence. Despite wanting to leave Sam reluctantly parked the car and got out without taking his eyes off Adam, who despite some fear remained remarkably calm for a civilian who clearly knew that he had been lied to by someone who casually carries a gun around. When Sam was standing next to Adam at the door he looked down at him, attempting to scare him off but his new brother responded with only defiance and waited for him to speak.
He wanted to ignore him, to order him to leave and get his life back to normal. But he looked so much like Dean that he simply opened the door and entered, leaving it open for his brother to follow him.
"Ok, lets just go over everything one more time. Just to be sure I've gotten this right." Adam said as he sat on the bed opposite to Sam, the one picture he had of his family now in the hands of the only other surviving Winchester after he demanded evidence that they were related. Adam hadn't asked about the stranger in the photo which Sam was grateful for because he didn't know how to answer that. "You're my brother, and you and dad hunt monsters. Monsters are real, actual monsters like in the movies. And you think that the thing dad was hunting when he met mom came back?"
"That's pretty much it." Sam replied with a nod, and he waited patiently for the typical reaction. The denial, the demands for proof, the awkward attempts to subtly call the police to drag Sam off into a white padded room where he will wear a straightjacket for the rest of his life.
Adam looked at him with his mouth open slightly, as if he wanted to talk but he couldn't find the words, before nodding slowly. "Ok."
"What?" What do you mean by that?" Sam asked as he frowned.
"I mean I believe you."
"Oh come on. Nobody ever just believes this without proof."
"Look, the way I see it either you're lying or just crazy, and that means you can't do anything to find my mom which makes you as useful as the cops. But if you're telling the truth, then that means you can actually save her. It's not exactly a hard decision." Adam explained quickly, before shrugging slightly and looking away. "Besides, we're brothers right? And you're telling me the truth?"
"Yeah."
"Then I trust you."
Sam ignored the weird feeling that gave him, the sudden rush of memories of looking up to Dean as if he had all the answers and of the firm belief that he could trust him with anything because Dean was his big brother. Nothing good would come from this, he knew that which is why he's been trying to avoid getting involved like this. He couldn't risk getting involved because if he did it would be harder to leave, and he had to leave because being in Adam's life would only guarantee his death.
"Dude, you're not going to cry like a girl are you? I know that was a sappy thing to say, but you can just be cool about it."
For a split second he saw Dean sitting across from him before it was replaced by Adam, reminding him that Dean has been dead for seven months and is currently being tortured in Hell for the deal he made to bring Sam back to life. He was reminded of the six months he spent hunting the Trickster, of ignoring anything that didn't benefit his mission and ignoring his feelings of guilt until he was dead to everything. Until Bobby called him and he...
"I'm going to get some food. Just stay here until I get back." he ordered as he sat up suddenly, ignoring the look of surprise on Adam's face as he left.
He shouldn't have been surprised when he got a call from Barton while he was grabbing some stuff from a store across the street, screaming that the monster was back before the line went dead just after he heard the sound of a gunshot. He tried calling Barton back before racing back to the motel only to find Adam yelling for help as something tried to drag him underneath a car, thankfully vanishing once Sam shot at it with a quick look revealing that it had grabbed Adam from a manhole. While his brother began freaking out slightly as he fully realized that Sam wasn't lying, clearly having been hoping at least a little bit that there was a more mundane explanation, the hunter began looking over all the evidence in his mind. All the evidence he had did suggest a ghoul as a likely suspect, but since there had been two attacks at the same time that meant more than one which made things even more dangerous. He did momentarily consider the possibility that it was something else but there had to be a connection to dad's hunt because the only link between the Adam, Kate Milligan and Joe Barton was John Winchester.
He hated that he decided within only a few seconds to use Adam as a bait, the him from three years ago would never have even considered doing something as horrible as that. But the him from three years ago hadn't gone through the same torture he had, hadn't seen Dean die over a hundred times and then did unspeakable things all to make sure that the monsters were killed. So he pushed down the disgust he had for himself and took Adam back to his house, explaining his plan as he opened up the trunk of the Impala to show off all the weapons and supplies to the amazed Adam. He then immediately got to work on explaining how to properly use a gun and some of the other weapons, because if he was going to use his brother as bait he was going to make sure he had a decent chance of surviving.
Adam actually took to shooting like it was second nature, to the point Sam wondered if the Winchester family was just naturally gifted at killing. He made a few mistakes but once Sam explained what he did wrong he didn't do it again, and as Adam grew more confident Sam couldn't help the feeling of pride. Did Dean feel this way when the two of them would practice together when dad wasn't around which meant they could talk and have some fun together, before he became angry about his life and resentful of his father and brother? Sam had only been the older brother for about a day but despite knowing that it would only backfire he couldn't stop himself from loving it and enjoying Adam's company.
He shared as much as he could over the course of the next day as they waited for the ghouls to show up, telling him stories about the monsters he hunted and the different weapons he had used. He showed him dad's journal to help him better understand what they would be facing, with Adam reading through it with interest. He also shared more about his own life, about his mother and his friends as well as dad's brief visits where he acted like the father Sam always wanted him to be. But then, as Sam should have expected, he asked the serious questions.
"How did John die?"
"A demon killed him."
"Oh." he replied, there being a sudden pause in their conversation before he spoke again. "Is that also what killed our other brother?"
Sam flinched slightly and he wanted to walk out of this conversation so much, but seeing the hopeful look in Adam's eyes that told Sam that his brother desperately wanted him to open up he simply sighed. "No, Dean was killed by something else. It's called a Trickster and it killed him about seven months ago."
Adam said nothing for a moment as he took that in, and Sam was reminded of how dad and Dean expected him to share their pain over mom's death without understanding that he can't truly feel the loss of someone he never knew the same way they could. Unlike dad and Dean he took more pity on his little brother and gave him a small smile.
"It's ok, you don't have to say anything. I'm sure you two would have gotten along." he explained while Adam returned his smile with one of his own before reading the journal again.
"You know, this is some job you've got." Adam said, oblivious to the impact this had on Sam.
In another life, Sam would have given him a speech. The same speech dad gave him back when he was screaming hateful words at him and the life he had forced his sons into, because when he looked back at how he had acted back then he wanted to strangle himself. For being so oblivious to how John had tried to prepare him and Dean for the harshness of life, to defend themselves from the monsters that lurked in the shadows, and for ignoring that he was right all along. The only thing you can truly rely on was family, because if you try to have a normal life all those friends and loved ones you make will just get killed. But Sam lived in this life, where he had lost his family to this life and had been alone for months dwelling on his mistakes, so instead he returned his focus to showing Adam the weapons.
"Sam, can I ask you something?"
He nodded in response, frowning slightly at how reluctant and worried Adam's voice had been.
"Do you think my mom's alive?"
Sam looked at him sadly while shaking his head, hating that he had to be the one to tell him this and wishing Dean was here because he would be able to handle this so much better than him. Adam looked at him for a moment as if hoping Sam would actually say something, but eventually he gave up and started going through dad's journal.
As it turned out, things had to go wrong for things to go right. It was ghouls, two siblings in fact who apparently wanted revenge for John killing their father and who had been overjoyed to find that there was another son to kill besides Adam. The one that took the form of his mom tricked Adam into letting her in, the teenager too excited by the possibility that Sam had been wrong to think clearly. The ghouls had done the standard evil monster thing of monologuing where they explain why they are doing what they are doing because they all seem to love doing that, and they joked about who was going to die first while Sam was strapped to a table glancing with worry at Adam who was being held down by a ghoul that looked like Barton. Their guns were scattered on the floor with no clear way of getting to them and yet again Sam wished Dean was here, because then he could at least hope he would burst in and save them. But he was on his own and if they died tonight, it would be because Sam couldn't save them.
"What do you think Sam?" Kate asked him with a vicious grin. "Should we kill you first, making Adam's last memory be of two important people in his life killing his brother? Or should we kill him first, and let you watch knowing that despite all your little weapons you ultimately can't do anything to save him?"
"Fuck you." Sam snarled, before grimacing in pain as Kate dug her nails into his arm and drawing some blood.
"Hold Adam still and make sure he watches this. We can take turns." she told her brother as she bent down to Sam's arm with her mouth wide.
"Leave him alone!" Adam shouted angrily as he tried to force himself up, only for Barton to silence him with a punch to the face.
Sam saw red at that point and while he hasn't fed for days now, he still had enough to send Barton colliding through the kitchen wall while Kate and Adam yelled in surprise. Everything was silent for a moment before Kate span around, gripping him by the neck and hissing at him in anger. "How did you do that? What are you!?"
The next thing Sam knew, Kate's head vanished with a loud bang that left him stunned for a moment. He looked around and saw Adam clutching a shotgun in his hands, his arms shaking as his eyes widened at what he had just done, and while Sam knew that he understood that the ghoul wasn't really his mom, it's not exactly easy killing it when it looked just like her. Both of them were so shocked by what had happened that they forgot about the other ghoul which took the opportunity to leap at Adam, pushing him to the ground while the shotgun went off twice. Everything was silent and for one horrifying moment as he strained to see them at the edge of his line of sight, Sam was terrified that it had happened again. That he had lost another brother, that he was going to bury another brother because he couldn't bring himself to give Dean a hunter's funeral, and that he was going to spend the rest of his life knowing that he was responsible for a third death. Though as he heard movement from behind him and the sound of someone coming closer, he wondered if he should just let the ghoul kill him so that everything could be over. He closed his eyes, embracing the chance for his miserable existence to end and at least then he could be with Dean in Hell.
"Are you ok?" a hesitant voice asked, and Sam opened his eyes in surprise to see Adam. The teenager looked like he was shellshocked, with blood splattered across his face and his shoulder, and having seen that Sam was alive he began to remove the restraints at Sam's wrists.
"Yeah." Sam replied, his voice coming out more quietly than he expected so he nodded before speaking again. "Are you alright?"
Adam wasn't looking at him anymore, instead he was staring down at the ghoul that looked like Kate with a confused expression, as if he knew what he was seeing but wasn't able to truly accept it. Sam undid the restraints at his legs and got off the table, glancing down at the ghoul and Adam before touching his brother on his shoulder. Adam flinched in surprise and turned to look at Sam, who hesitated only for a moment before pulling his brother in for a hug.
Adam did nothing for a moment, before wrapping his arms around Sam and slowly sobbing.
It was difficult to get rid of the bodies and clear up most of the damage on his own, Sam was used to covering up his tracks though admittedly he had pushed his luck by staying for Kate's funeral. But he couldn't just abandon Adam to deal with all of this alone, it's his responsibility to look after him and make sure that he had someone to help him through this. So he braved the awkward questions from people concerned about who this new person Adam was spending time with, as well as finding where the ghouls had hidden the bodies of Kate and Barton before dropping the cops an anonymous tip. At least that way both Adam and the people who knew Kate and Barton could have proper closure.
After the funeral Sam had taken Adam home, and spent the next two days making sure that he was ok. Adam still seemed at a loss about what he should do and often fell into a deep silence, clearly thinking hard about something which Sam figured was understandable. He knew Adam had applied to college and wanted to be a doctor, and while he didn't say anything he hoped that Adam would stick to that plan. But Sam understood that something like this could leave someone questioning what they should do next, how they should move forward with their lives when they know that monsters live in the darkness.
Eventually however, Sam had decided that he had stayed long enough and figured he should make a move before Ruby tracks him down. The last thing he wanted is his untrustworthy demon-with-benefits to find out about Adam, if anyone ever found out about him that would paint a huge target on his back. So he started packing up all his equipment back into the Impala, wondering how he was going to explain to Adam why he had to leave. He figured he could leave Adam dad's journal so he could at least prepare himself, Sam had a lot of it memorised and other stuff written down, so he didn't really need it anymore.
He had just finished up putting everything away and closed the hidden compartment of the trunk when he saw movement at the corner of his eye, and he tensed for a moment before seeing that it was Adam. Sam opened his mouth to give his speech, explaining why he had to leave and more importantly why they shouldn't talk, when he saw the backpack on Adam's shoulders as well as the travelling bag in his hand. Sam frowned for only a moment, and then suddenly he figured out what Adam wanted.
"No." he said firmly, slamming the trunk shut angrily which made Adam flinch.
"I want to help you. I want to be a hunter, like you and John." he explained, but Sam just walked past him back into the house and Adam reluctantly followed him.
"No." he repeated, snatching the bag from Adam's grip and throwing it to the floor.
"I killed those ghouls, I have what it takes!"
"You got lucky, insanely lucky. Look, I understand why you're doing this. You want revenge on all the monsters for what happened to your mom, it's the same reason anyone has ever become a hunter. But here's some free advice." Sam explained, wanting to shake Adam until he understood. "There's nothing good about being a hunter. It's a lonely life filled with death and losing everyone you love, where you're lucky if you find even a few moments of happiness, and it either ends with you being killed by a monster or becoming just as bad as them."
"You're just saying that because of what happened to Dean. I'm sorry he's dead, but I'm not him."
"Dean's in Hell." I said simply, and I'm glad to see that it shut him up based on his shocked reaction. "He made a deal with a demon to save my life, and then he died so now he's being tortured for eternity."
"And I lost it, I lost all sense of control of my life and my anger." I continued before Adam could even think about saying anything. "Adam, I've hurt people. Innocent people when I was convinced that was the only way to kill the monster. I still save most of them, but other times I do whatever I think I have to do to stop more people from getting hurt. All I cared about was killing the thing that killed Dean, and I was so focused on that I didn't stop to think about what I was turning in to. Not until I killed a friend of mine, a man named Bobby who in many ways was more my dad than dad ever was, all because I was convinced that he was the Trickster. Now I spend every day wondering if another hunter is going to track me down and kill me for what I did, and I wouldn't blame the if they did because I deserve it."
Adam was silent, too shocked to say anything judging from the look on his face, while Sam continued talking. "I'm telling you this because you have to understand. I don't care what you do with your life, as long as you live a normal one. Being a hunter will get you killed if you're lucky, otherwise you're going to end up like me. So I'm going to leave you my number in case anything else happens and I'm going to give you dad's journal so if anything does happen you can find out how to protect yourself. But I need you to tell me that you understand why you can't be a hunter."
They stared at each other for a long time, and Sam guessed that Adam wasn't even sure what was going to happen next either. Sam wasn't sure what he might do to ensure Adam did what he was told, he didn't think he would hurt him but at the same time he knew in his heart he would do whatever he had to do if it would make Adam understand. So Sam was eternally grateful when reluctantly Adam nodded, and Sam breathed a sigh of relief as Adam took his backpack off and dropped it to the ground.
"What are you going to...I mean, are you going to be ok?" Adam asked hesitantly.
"Honestly?" he replied. "I don't think so. Hunters don't get happy endings Adam, but like I said we get moments of happiness. Meeting you and making sure you're safe is good enough for me."
Sam stayed for a few hours after that, wanting to make sure that Adam wasn't lying and going over everything he needed to know. He gave him all his phone numbers while also giving him as much advice that Sam thought he could possibly need, and thankfully Adam didn't ask any questions about Bobby. It hurt Sam to mention him, just like it hurt Sam every single time his thoughts drifted back to what he had done during those moments when he had literally nothing to distract him like a new case, and he hadn't been lying when he said he feared another hunter might try to kill him. Bobby was loved by many people and if anyone ever suspected he was responsible he knew he would be hunted by everyone.
Eventually it was time for him to leave, his feelings in conflict over his decision but knowing it was the right one as he hugged Adam tightly. His brother hugged him back, and for a moment Sam almost gave in to the temptation. To bring Adam with him, train him to be a hunter so that he can defend himself properly and so that Sam didn't' have to be alone anymore. He wasn't Dean, he no longer saw his dead brother when Adam said or did something that reminded Sam of him, and instead he had grown to really enjoy Adam for the person he was. He enjoyed being a big brother and teaching someone else, and felt that not only would Adam take to the life better than Sam ever did but that he might fix him. That with him around, Sam could find his way back to being who he was before the Trickster and the mystery spot.
But he didn't give in because that was only a fantasy, and it ended with one burying the other. Sam couldn't do that again and he could bear to force Adam to do that, so eventually he let go of his brother and got into the Impala. With one last look he started the engine and drove away, ignoring every instinct in him to go back and denying the impulse to look back. He drove as fast he could, trying to stop himself from thinking of all the things that could happen to Adam when he wasn't around to protect him, when suddenly his phone rang.
He almost crashed into another car as he fumbled for the phone, panic seizing him as he cursed himself for not staying and getting angry the longer it took for him to find it and put it to his ear. "Adam? What's wrong?"
"Who's Adam?" a familiar voice asked over the phone.
"Ruby?"
"Were you expecting someone else?"
"I...No, I wasn't. What is it?" Sam corrected himself quickly, forcing himself to calm down and focus on what's important.
"I've got a lead on Lillith. You got time?"
"Yeah, I do." he replied as his training took over and he pushed any thought of Adam to the back of his mind. "What else am I going to do?"
