Chapter 1
"Just give up!" Jack growled through gritted teeth and he moved his feet in a tight circle. The young woman he was exchanging blows with was determined and strong and just as experienced as Jack. She wouldn't give up. He knew that. She knew that.
Jack made a jab towards her shoulder and she parried it powerfully, sending a bone-jarring jolt up Jack's arm. Jack swirled and hacked towards her side. She jumped out of the way, parrying it at the last minute. Jack made a tight circle of his wrist and thrust his blade towards her other shoulder. She took another step back and went to parry Jack, but he retracted his blade, squatted down and forced his blade up against her neck. He straightened.
"I have bested ye," he commented. The young woman dropped her arm.
"Yes."
"The penalty for resistance is death, ye know that."
"Yes."
"But if ye would prefer, we could take ye on as a member of our crew. We could used a skilled swords.woman such as yerself. As long as ye don't cut our throats in our sleep. Would ye agree to that?" The young woman narrowed her eyes and bit her lip.
"You would make me work in the galleys, would you not?"
"No, 'course not luv."
"But you said that the penalty for resistance is death. Why such a generous offer?" The young woman queried. Jack grinned slyly to other members of his crew, a grin the young woman didn't see.
"Well, that punishment if usually only used fer men. We like to be more lenient towards women. Plus, we could have ye do some odd jobs, like cookin' or sewin'."
"Oh, so you're a male chauvinist. Because I'm a woman, I don't get punished the same way?"
"What? Ye want to die?"
"No. But I don't follow you're logic." Jack sighed.
"Shall I put it for ye plainly?" Jack asked. The young woman nodded.
"That might help." Jack scratched his beard, thinking quickly of a story that would suffice.
"A lot of our crew have died, some disease that only kills certain people. Our crew is not large enough, so we need as many people as we can get to man the Pearl. Even galley slaves or those who resist us, savvy?"
"Savvy."
"See, talkin' like a pirate already. So what do you say?" Jack extended his hand.
"I still don't know why you won't kill me." The young woman whispered. Jack sighed.
"How about this? Is this simple enough? If ye say yes, I'll let ye go. If you say no, I'll kill ye." The young woman sighed and took Jack's brown hand.
"Alright.."
