PART V: "Linger Sweetly"
When all the time in the world came to an end, as all things do, Arthur found himself once again in Merlin's arms. It was a familiar position from what was now millennia ago. They laid holding each other fast in a quiet forest after a hike. They'd shared some fond words and memories and laughed. They'd forgotten how long they'd lived, but it didn't matter. Eternity for them was filled with hugs and I-love-you's instead of empty chairs and misty lakes.
But even eternity ends; this time, it would end sweetly, as all things should.
Two lovers embracing in shaded wood - all but alone. Their bond was as strong as the old, mighty trees that surrounded them. The only difference being their love could never be cut down. Like the trees, they would remain as they were after death.
The king's body had slowly turned to oak in the arms of his warlock, who had slowly turned into birch. They breathed out in tandem, tired and unaware of nature's doings. They exhaled in unison for the final time, eyes remaining open and full of love, but unseeing. They sprouted moss along their wooden forearms. Flowers bloomed from scalp and bark from skin.
And as the Sun eventually set for the final time, the Earth welcomed her beloved sons home. For although all love must end, its mark shall always remain - cast unto Earth like claws unto skin.
