Hello All! This is my first Fanfic, and I'm still figuring some things out, like formatting and whatnot. I appreciate any feedback! Obviously I do not own Inuyasha or any of its characters. I hope you enjoy the story :)
Chapter 1
Inuyasha's back leaned against the Bone Eater's Well. He sighed as he picked at the grass around him. It has been over three years since the well separated him from Kagome. Every three days he came to visit the well and see if it will perhaps allow him entry to the future. It never did. The wind started to pick up around him and he closed his eyes as he inhaled deeply. The wind tugged at his long silver hair playfully, pulling it in front of his face. The wind carried the smell of the harvest and the sound of the forest around him.
He thought back on his time without Kagome. Miroku and Sango got married and started their family shortly after the defeat of Naraku. Miroku took exceptional effort to teach his children about their spiritual powers, and their heritage from both his and Sango's side of the family. The twins loved playing "slay the demon" with Inuyasha and Shippou, no doubt due to their fascination and love for the demon slayer clan their family once was. They looked forward to the visits of Kohaku, who started rebuilding the clan with the help if his sister. He always brought scrolls with him and sometimes even smaller weapons. He taught them history like they were fairly tails, and the children soaked up every word like a sponge.
Sango and Miroku became quite influential, not just in their village, but the surrounding ones as well, and many of the younger generation wanted to be like them, so it didn't take a lot for Kohaku to find candidates that wanted to learn the ways of the demon slayers. The village, where the clan once flourished, was slowly being rebuilt, and Inuyasha had no doubt in his mind that eventually Sango and Miroku would move there and truly start leading the clan.
Shippou was scarcely seen these days as he too became very busy with his own training to become a stronger demon. He often traveled with Sesshomaru. Inuyasha scoffed at the thought. His whole relationship with Sesshomaru changed after Rin moved to the village three years ago. Rin quickly became Kaede's right hand. Inuyasha not only watched over her to make sure she was safe, but he was teaching her whatever he could, and whatever knowledge Kagome left for him. The young girl and he became quite close, almost like siblings. She reminded him of Kagome in some ways and he embraced those moments the most. He would walk her to the herbal garden and helped her with the chores that were more physical. Sesshomaru trusted Inuyasha to keep her safe, and that trust blossomed to a real brotherly relationship, although neither of them would admit to that. Sesshomaru was even trying to be helpful when Inuyasha got in a particularly sour mood in Kagome's absence.
"I see you haven't broken the habit of coming to the well."
Inuyasha cracked an eye open and glanced at his brother before closing it again. Sesshomaru stood a few feet away from him. He made a soft sound from the back of his throat but didn't say anything. Sesshomaru knew damn well that Inuyasha truly believed that one day he would be reunited with Kagome.
"I admire that about you." Sesshomaru said and looked at the slowly moving clouds above them."Maybe that's the curse of our heritage." Inuyasha turned his head so fast he swore he heard his neck pop. He saw a ghost of a smile on his brother's face and it threw him for a loop. Sesshomaru didn't need to take a look at his brother's face to see his confusion.
"We are loyal to a fault" he continued, "when you find your person you can't let them go. Unfortunately it seems we are also not the best at recognizing our person even when they are right in front of us. Take our father, my mother wasn't the one for him, albeit she would have been a better choice" Sesshomaru heard the growl but didn't bat an eye.
"Don't even try, little brother. The miko woman wasn't your person and you were pining after her for the longest time. You didn't recognize who Kagome was to you until the end." Inuyasha could see a sliver of pity enter his brother's eyes and he looked away.
"Is that why you left Rin here?" Inuyasha asked. A rare, real smile crossed the Inu Youkai's face. He didn't comment on that, but he knew Inuyasha understood. While he wanted to make sure Rin would never be hurt, he couldn't continue raising her. He knew who she was to him, and as he looked after her it seemed like they started to develop a father-daughter relationship, which just felt absolutely wrong knowing what he wanted from her. He couldn't just groom her to be his bride eventually. He wanted her to have her freedom and choice, so instead he left her with Inuyasha.
When Inuyasha didn't get an answer he closed his eyes again.
"I know we were born for each other. There will never be anyone else for me. I know I thought the same about Kikyo, but I have no doubt that Kagome and I are meant to be." Inuyasha's voice was full of conviction.
The air changed around them and Inuyasha hopped to his feet. He could smell the future. Did the well hear him? Was there a God out there who heard his prayers and finally answered? He couldn't believe his nose, and seeing the roof of the well house at the bottom didn't convince him either. He overcame with emotions. How many times have he dreamed of the well letting him through? How many times had he felt broken when he woke up? He didn't want to raise his hopes up, but all his senses were screaming at him to move as fast as he can before the well changes it's mind.
"It seems like you are getting a second chance, little brother." Sesshomaru said as he started heading towards the village."I'll let the others know of your departure."
Inuyasha stared after him for a moment longer before he hopped on the edge of the well.
"I hope I'll see you again brother, oh and Kagome once mentioned that in the future its smart to invest in windows and apples, whatever that means." he yelled after Sesshomaru as he jumped in the well.
Millions of thoughts ran across his mind as he fell. Will she be excited to see him? Has she been waiting for him as he had been for her? Will she want him there, should the well not grant a way back for him? He wasn't sure if he would be able to deal with seeing her with another man, especially if she were to want to send him back to the feudal era. He shook his head at that thought. He made the decision to wait for her, she wasn't obligated to do the same. He wanted her happiness over all else, even if it was with someone else. Of course, preferably with him. He couldn't wait to see her, to hear her voice, and to smell her sweet scent.
He finally felt solid ground under his feet and with lightning speed leapt out of the well and looked around the small shed. Her smell covered everything, like she was there just a few hours ago. That filled with him with hope. Maybe she hoped he come to her. He stood there for only one moment longer while he processed that he really got through and it wasn't just a dream. He glanced back down in the well, and instead of seeing the clear skies if the feudal era, it was just solid ground at the bottom of the well.
He sprinted towards the house to see Kagome. The closer he got to the door the more anxious he got, jealous and nervous whispers filling his head. He pushed them to the back of his mind as his heart leapt in joy when her scent became stronger. He jumped up to her window but Kagome wasn't there. The whole house was empty.
"Fuck" Inuyasha grunted as he went back to the well house. He will have to go look for her. He wasn't sure what part of his mind was working rationally, but he remembered that Kagome's mother gave him a cap from one of the old boxes in the well house. He can borrow another one and set out to search for Kagome without bringing too much attention to himself. He remembered how she screamed at him to disguise himself when he showed up at her high school once without a hat. He chuckled at the memory. Kagome was undoubtedly beautiful when she smiled, but there was just something about her anger that he found incredibly attractive. While he wouldn't mind seeing her like that, he wanted the moment they reunite to be nothing but peaceful and happy. As he looked through the boxes for a hat, he found some old shirts and pants.
"If I'm going to be staying here, maybe I can dress the part as well?" He took out one of the pants and with a heavy sigh started undressing. The pale blue jeans were too tight on his legs, and the gray T-shirt was baggy around his upper body but too small around his shoulders. He didn't want to waste another moment on looking for something that fit better. This was good enough. He grabbed a blue baseball hat from another box and ran towards Kagome's old high school.
