Violet looked up at the squalid house opposite the clean, smart, tidy house the Baudelaires were standing by. The house was square, tooth-shaped, and it seemed to be leaning towards the left, a smaller version of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. She sighed. This was where their adventures began.

"Why are we here again?" asked a voice. Violet turned her head to see her 4-year-old sister, Sunny, clutching Klaus's hand for dear life.

Violet shrugged. "Maybe it's because Mr Poe wanted us to record our story," said Klaus, pushing his round, circular glasses on his nose.

He unlocked the door with the key Count Olaf gave the orphans two years ago.

Klaus sighed, as he opened the door, letting his sisters and his adoptive daughter, Beatrice, go in. He shut the door. He heard a noise, perhaps a scream, he didn't know.

"What's that?" asked Sunny. "That noise?"

"I'll go and investigate," replied Klaus.
