From "The Healing in the Vine" By Tamora Pierce.

Briar watched his teacher struggling for breath. He knew he should do something other than just stand there, but it felt like he was wrapped in a cocoon in which he could not escape. A scream tore his throat, but nobody heard him. Yelling for Sandry, Daja, or even Tris. They needed to help Rosethorn, otherwise she would die. He heard shouting in the distance, and knew that help was on the way. It started getting fainter as soon as he relaxed. He snapped his eyes open, and again started struggling with his bonds. Daja, Tris, Sandry, he mind spoke, help Rosethorn, she's dying! The shouting was getting louder and louder, he struggled more fiercely, as that seemed to bring them closer.

"Briar! Boy, stop that ! I'm fine, I'm not dying, although you will be soon if you don't stop that racket!"

"Nah, you'll die, itta be my fault,!"

Briar felt a soothing light on his face, in his very soul. He felt the soothing comfort of his shakkan, and slowly opened his eyes. A face was staring down at him, a face that had what looked like worry in it, but which disappeared as soon as he opened his eyes.

"Boy, what were you dreaming to cause you to wake up all of us? As I'm sure you can see, I am fine, but you will not be until you explain what is going on here!"

Rosethorn did her best to look like her usual snapping self, but she was too tired to do more than put sting into her words. Briar sat up and grabbed her hands.

"You're safe! I mean, yeah nothing, umm, I'm fine."

Briar quickly took his hands away. He didn't usually go so touchy-feely. He looked around and saw that Rosethorn had been telling the truth. All the inhabitants of Discipline were in his room, and looking at him with bewildered expressions. He looked for his shakkan, and sent a wave a thanks to him, for helping him. Hearing a yawn, he gazed around. Sandry, Daja and Tris were all there. Sandry looked tired, Tris rumpled and rather annoyed, and Tris, well, Tris was Tris.

"You can go now, I'm fine" he muttered, feeling like an absolute idiot.

Rosethorn looked like she would say something, but was to tired to do anything but walk away. You really should say what happened, commented Sandry. You looked like someone had died! Someone almost did, he replied as they left. Someone almost did.
