Surge

The crowd surged forward.

Naruto cursed as he felt more people press against his body.

His girlfriend, Hinata, looked at him over her shoulder. Terror was written across her face and in her opal eyes.

Naruto fought to keep his footing. He knew getting knocked off his feet would probably be a death sentence for both of them.

"I got you, baby!" he shouted over the crowd. He wrapped his arms around Hinata and lifted her off her feet. Hoping he wasn't making a mistake by doing that and thanking God for the fact that he was taller and bulkier than most of the people around him, Naruto shoved their way to a wall. It was a foot or so over his head. And while he had no clue as to what was on the other side, even sitting on the wall had to be safer than being in the over-packed crowd they were in now.

It took longer than he thought to get to the wall, but he was able to lift Hinata up and she pulled herself onto the top. After she was secure, Naruto pulled himself up next to her. He looked to the other side and that street had lots of people but was blessedly clear compared to what they had just escaped from.

A flash of pink caught his eye, and he turned in time to see a man lift a girl up onto his shoulders.

Naruto waved his arms "HERE! OVER HERE!"

The man's black eyes met Naruto's blue ones and Naruto could see that the man knew the terrible predicament they were in and the grim determination to at least get his girlfriend clear. He was taller than Naruto but much slimer. He could see the fear in the pink-haired girl's eyes and that she was scared more for her boyfriend than herself.

The pair was still more than a meter away from the wall when the black-hair man literally threw his girlfriend at Naruto who managed to grab her arms and pull her onto the wall on his other side.

"SASUKE!" The girl reached out for her boyfriend and had to grab her to keep her from falling into the multitude below.

The crowd was pulling Sasuke further away so very slowly, but it was clearly getting worse.

Naruto bellowed "SASUKE, DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO! GRAB MY HAND!"

Sasuke closed his eyes for a moment than pulled himself up onto a man next to him and lunged towards Naruto.

Naruto grabbed his wrist and began pulling Sasuke from the crush. He felt Hinata grab hold of him to keep him steady and the pink-haired girl helped pull Sasuke from the tidal wave of humanity.

Sasuke straddled the wall and gasped for breath as his girlfriend sobbed against his chest. Sasuke had lost both shoes, but he was alive.

The screams began.

Naruto and Sasuke looked at each other. Sasuke turned to the pink-haired girl "Sakura, you get down. We'll try to pull people out and hand them down to you."

Sakura sniffled, wiped her eyes, and nodded. "Save people. But don't fall off this wall!"

At that she climbed down to the street below.

Hinata fiercely kissed Naruto. "Promise me the same!"

Naruto smiled "I do." And he held onto Hinata's hand until she was safely on the other side.

The two young men looked at each other and began grabbing people and forcibly dragging them over the wall to the people waiting below to help. Other young men managed to climb the wall as well. Some stayed to help to pull people out of the crowd while others climbed down and fled.

Naruto and Sasuke concentrated on grabbing many people as they could until police officers arrived and took over.

The small group walked way from the horror. But they were only a block away when Naruto stopped and sank to the ground, shaking. Hinata wrapped her arms around him as he began to weep.

Sasuke and Sakura sat next to them.

A small pool of silence in the noise of the street, screams and sirens.
