A gentle birdsong filled the air. The cool breeze rousing the sleeping boy. He sat up, groggy and confused, since when had he arrived... Here? He looked beside, there sat his brother, but... Why was he a teenager? He looked at himself, he too was younger. He shook his brother's shoulder. Immediately, the sleeping figure shot upwards, looking around frantically.

"It's just me, Dante."

Said the teen. Dante looked at him, blinked several times, rubbed his eyes, then looked again

"Vergil? Why are you...?"

He asked, looking at the field around them

"We appear to have been... Transported. This is most certainly not the Underworld."

Vergil said, already feeling a migraine forming in his skull. Just when things were getting simple, this happened. They both got up, Dante patted himself down

"Great, I don't have my weapons and I can't summon my sword. You got anything?"

Dante asked

Vergil tried summoning the Yamato, but nothing happened

"No. We have lost our weapons and are stranded."

He gave a sigh then began walking forward, his brother following behind him.

After walking for a long time through the vast forest, they heard the sounds of a commotion up ahead, ducking behind the trees they followed the sound to a clearing. They saw a dark-haired girl wearing a red coat with a scarf and cap throw a peculiar ball at a bird-like creature. Suddenly, the ball flew open and sucked in the bizzare creature, snapping shut. At her side was what could only be described as a monkey that was on fire, but it didn't seem to even flinch. Vergil looked beside himself- wait where was Dante

"Hey there. Uh, do you happen to know the direction to the nearest town?"

Vergil looked up. That idiot! What was he doing?!

"Well, actually it'd be Jubilife city. Not a town. Why, are you lost?"

She asked, the monkey disappearing into another peculiar ball as she put it on her belt. Vergil lept out and placed his hand on Dante's shoulder

"We do not need anyone's help. Let us keep going."

Vergil said, briefly glaring at her

She huffed

"Well, that's awfully rude? What's with your snobby attitude? Shouldn't you be back in your luxurious mansion being tended to by your servants?"

She said, pointing towards his cloak. Which Vergil realized barely fit on him anymore

"Don't mind him. He's a good guy at heart. We're just... Um..."

Dante tried to think of a reason for why they were unattended in the middle of the forest. Only for Vergil to cut in

"We are running away from home. And we don't intend to go back."

She eyed him carefully

"Why exactly are you running away? And why shouldn't I just send you back? Your parents must be worried sick for both of you."

Vergil felt a flare of anger, and for a moment, his stoic mask slipped. And it didn't escape the notice of everyone present. Dante sighed, and began pleading

"Please. Just help us, we'll pay you back. But we can't go back from where we came."

She looked at him and saw the look of pain and tiredness in his eyes. Sighing, she relented

"I'm Dawn. Who are you two?"

She asked. Instantly Dante's eyes lit up, while Vergil just scowled

"I'm Dante, that's my brother, Vergil. We're lost, as you can tell, and we just need to get to this city you're talking about."

He extended his hand, which Dawn shook. Then she began leading the way, with the brothers trailing behind. Vergil lunched his brother in the arm, whispering to him

"I told you. We do not need help. But because of your infuriating stubbornesss we are now being chaperoned by some... Girl."

Dante just shrugged

"Lighten up, will ya? You're so grumpy sometimes."

Vergil then stared at his brother. Then at his clothes, he looked at his own cloak. Dante seemed to have the same idea, so he asked the obvious

"New clothes?"

Vergil nodded

"Yes."

After arriving in Jubilife City. The brothers immediately headed for the mall to purchase new clothes. Dante walked out of the changing room, deciding on his outfit. Jeans with a basic red shirt and white and red jacket. Vergil walked out of the opposite room, wearing the same ensemble except it was Black and blue. He took one look at Dante's grin and manifested his ever present scowl

"This was all they had. I don't want to look like you, you imbecile."

Vergil said. Dante just chuckled. They stood in front of the large mirror, looking at their outfits. Dante still had a smile on his face when he began talking

"Do you remember our first Halloween. Mom dressed us up in matching costumes, and you didn't get any candy because Ms. Brown thought you were me and had already knocked?"

He looked at his brother, who was still staring in the mirror. Dante's smile faded

"You don't remember, huh?"

Vergil looked at him

"You shared your candy. Because you felt bad."

They both chuckled. Dante started again

"You know. I think we could have a great adventure here. Wherever we are, we're younger and destiny is just calling to us. We have a second chance."

Vergil looked to his feet

"A second chance..."

He pondered...

It was night. They had gotten rooms to stay in at the Pokémon center since Dawn needed to heal hers anyway. Vergil and Dante had settled in, talking and generally catching up. It was different from the non-stop fighting in the Underworld, but it was welcome.

"Well, it's getting pretty late. We should to bed."

Dante said, Vergil nodded, slipping under his covers. Dante stood for a moment

"Hang on. I need to tell Dawn something, I'll be back."

Dante said, exiting the room and shitting the door behind him. He walked over to the door across from them and knocked on it, Dawn opened up, looking confused

"You need something, Dante?"

He shook his head

"Just needed to talk to you. It's about Vergil. Would you mind if I come in, it's gonna take a long time to tell you the whole story."

She invited him in and he sat down on a chair. Dawn sat on her bed and looked at him expectantly

"So..."

He began, but where to begin?

"I need to say that my brother and I were... Separated, until recently. Our parents... Died in a house fire, it's a sore subject, you're lucky he didn't smack you back there in the forest, he's known for being like that..."

He sighed. Now for the hard part...

"When we met each other after that happened, we were at each other's throats. So he left, and... Someone found him."

Dawn felt bad for them, they lost their parents at such a young age, and drove each other apart?

"Like a caretaker?"

Dante shook his head

"I'll spare you the details. But his time with that man messed him up. Physically and mentally. I didn't even recognize him when I found him again. Long story short, we found each other again and worked out our differences. Now you gotta understand, I told you this because my brother may seem like a jerk but he's been through hell. So, please, I know you two got off on the wrong foot, but do me a favor and cut him some slack. He may seem like a jerk, but he's not. Trust me, he's my brother after all."

She nodded her head, how could she say now after hearing what they've both been through

"I'll try, Dante."

He smiled.

"Thank you."

It was late during the night when Vergil awoke, his brother was sleeping in the other bed. He looked beside him and saw it was 2 AM. He stared at the ceiling and thought about what Dante had said

'We have a second chance...'

Vergil had caused his brother so much pain. And had tried to kill him several times over, yet there he was. Offering him a blank slate...

"I don't deserve a second chance..."
