Jamie furrowed his brow when he heard a small commotion coming from his office around the corner as he talked to one of the officers at the front desk.
"Excuse me," he interrupted, quickly putting his hand up. "I think I hear something in my office. I'll be right back."
The officer nodded, "Okay Sarge."
Jamie walked over to his office, peeked his head in, and couldn't help but chuckle at the sight. His very pregnant wife was sitting on the ground, enjoying a small bag of popcorn that she had more than likely found in one of his desk drawers. He kept a variety of snacks and drinks in his desk for her, to make sure that her and the baby girl in her belly stayed well fed and hydrated throughout the day. It was something that he'd started at the beginning of her pregnancy and was sure that he'd now have to keep doing it forever.
"Why didn't you just sit in my chair?" Jamie said suddenly as he broke Eddie out of her thoughts.
"Because it's not that easy to get back up when you have to get this low. Especially with this bowling ball that I'm carrying," she responded, laying a hand on her belly. "We need to restock by the way. I think there's only one bag of popcorn left and Badillo took the last little box of animal crackers."
"Didn't I just restock the snacks last week?" he asked.
"Yes but that was last week. Your daughter makes me hungry. And Badillo gets hungry too. He says he's gained like fifteen pounds of sympathy weight since the beginning of my pregnancy."
Jamie laughed, "Well, I have him beat because I've gained almost twenty." He walked over to her. "Do you want to stay down there or do you want to sit in my chair?"
She raised her hands up, "Chair please."
He took her hands and gently pulled her up. Then, he held the rolling chair as she sat down.
"Better?" he asked.
"A lot better. My butt was going numb down there."
"I can imagine. How has your day been going?"
"Same as usual. Answering phone calls and trying not to get a paper cut. And the baby kicking me in the ribs all day. But Badillo brought me some lunch today so it hasn't been all too bad."
"That was nice of him," he replied.
With their differences at the beginning of their partnership, Jamie was surprised that Eddie and Badillo got along as well as they did. But, he was grateful for it. There was truly no one else that he'd trust to have his wife's back out on the beat than Badillo. And now with the pregnancy, he knew that Badillo would make sure that Eddie was taken care of in the event that he wasn't around to do it.
"Well that popcorn definitely hit the spot," Eddie said, crumbling up the bag and tossing it into the trash can.
"Are you heading back to your desk?" he asked.
She nodded as she pulled on his arm to stand up, "Yep. These phones aren't going to answer them themselves unfortunately."
"Just three more weeks, Ed," he reassured, running a hand over her belly. "Our girl will be here and you won't have to worry about this place for awhile.
"Our girl," she smiled gently, putting a hand over his. "I like the sound of that."
He smiled back at her, "I do too."
She looked around to make sure the coast was clear before standing on her tip toes and pressing a kiss to his lips, "I love you."
"I love you too."
"Will I see you at home or are you going to wait on me?"
"I'll wait on you," he said. "It's just an hour. I'll hang out with you at your desk until you can clock out."
She nodded as she looked out of the office window toward the back, "Okay. I should be getting back now. McNichols looks pissed off and I have a strong feeling that it's at me for who knows what reason."
"Good luck with that."
She rolled her eyes jokingly, "Well thanks."
Jamie just chuckled and watched as Eddie took off in a speed walk back to her desk.
