Disclaimer: I do not own the TV show 'BtVS' or any of the characters, that honor belongs to Joss Whedon, David Greenwalt, Kuzui Enterprises, Mutant Enemy and various other people and organizations that I can't remember at the moment. The point is I don't own them, I'm just borrowing them for use in this little fic of mine and I promise to put them back afterwards. The title is taken from a song by No Doubt on their album 'Tragic Kingdom', which I also do not own. Well, I don't own the rights to the song, I do own a copy of the album though, and it's very good.

Authors Note: Takes place right after 'Potential'.

"They'll never know how tough it is, Dawnie, to be the one who isn't chosen. To live so near to the spotlight and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realizes because nobody's watching me. I saw you last night. I see you working here today. You're not special. You're extraordinary."

As Xander left her to her research, Dawn thought over what had just happened, how Xander had revealed a part of himself previously kept hidden from the world. She was grateful for that, she knew now that no matter what happened she would define herself by who she was, not what she wasn't.

She had often spent time wishing she had superpowers like Buffy, ever since she had found out that her older sister was the Slayer, wishing she could be special and wishing she could be a part of something bigger than herself, that she mattered to the world.

Xander had made her realise that she was special, that she did matter, but in a different way to Buffy and the potentials. While they would get the glory and credit, she would work behind the scenes providing them with the tools they needed in order to defeat their enemies. They were the warriors fighting the good fight but as the old saying goes 'knowledge is power' and in that way she held more power than Buffy and the future Slayers.

But ultimately she was just a girl, making a difference where she could in the only way she knew how.

Just a girl.

"I can deal with that."
