Adam and Brennan were sitting at a lunch table eating sandwiches. Brennan was eating his kind of fast, like he hasn't eaten in days. Adam realized that he probably hasn't.
"Slow down, Ok. You're going to get sick." Adam pointed out. Brennan stopped and looked down ashamed. Adam reached over and cupped Brennan by his chin. Made him look him in the eyes.
"It's ok." Adam said gently.
"Thanks for lunch." Brennan said after a while.
"I hope you don't mind, but where are your parents?" Adam asked carefully.
"I don't know. They left a long time ago." Brennan said sadly.
"It's ok. I'm sorry I asked." Adam said gently. Brennan smiled at his gentleness. Then he reached out and grabbed his drink. The water spilled out a little in to his hand. The water mixed with his hand made an electric shock. And he dropped his drink. He looked down again ashamed.
'I'm sorry." Brennan said and mumbled I'm a freak. Adam realized that Brennan was a new mutant.
"No you're not a freak." Adam said softly. They sat in silence for a while finishing their lunches. When they were done the waiter took their plates. Brennan couldn't meet Adam's eyes. Adam got up and held out his hand to Brennan.
"Come on. I want to show you something." Adam said. Brennan smiled and took his hand. Adam paid the bill and left. They got in the car. Unknown to Brennan they were on their way to Sanctuary.
