Prologue

A tear rolled down Kyoko's cheek. This was the moment she had been waiting for.

She wanted to be Kuon's life partner and she couldn't believe that it was finally happening. Her heart felt like it was going to burst out of her chest any moment.

28 years old Kuon Hizuri gazed at 18 years old Mogami Kyoko, with only one thought in mind. He needed to do it. He needed to end it all. He had to break her heart before it was too late.

He knew she loved him and he loved her too but he was helpless. He had to choose and the choice was tough. He knew her love was genuine but he was not the one for her. They could never be together.

Their love was forbidden. They were not meant to be because he was just an elderly figure in her life.

He was her guardian.

Her best friend.

Her teacher.

He had practically brought her up. He was the one who took her into his arms when she was born. He had always been by her side through thick and thin and supported her in everything.

He was her shoulder to cry on.

He was the reason she smiled in her difficult times.

He was someone whom she blindly trusted.

He had always been there for her and looked after her in best way possible but now? Everything had changed. His heart had become rebellious. It had stopped listening to him.

How could he listen to his heart now and give into his desires?

No, it was impossible. Undoubtedly, she had reserved his heart only for herself since the day she was born but could they ever be together as a couple for the rest of their lives? No! Their age difference and the cruel society won't let them.

He didn't know when his heart betrayed him and his feelings changed from care to love.

Not just normal love but deep romantic love and it scared him.

Apart from everything, he knew she didn't deserve him. She deserved someone as angelic as herself. Not a beast like him.

He was madly in love with her and he didn't know how to reverse it. His changed-self freaked him out. He didn't know what to do. He tried everything he could think of but nothing seemed to work. He tried avoiding her but her innocent amber eyes always prevented him from doing so.

But now? He had to be cruel even if he didn't want to. He had to do something beyond horrible to his beloved. His heart was pleading him to drop the idea and embrace her warmly but he was going to do the opposite. He knew she might never see his face again but this was for the best.

Kuon closed his eyes and breathed heavily. His heart clenched against his chest.

"Break her heart. Make her hate you. So, she won't ever look at you the same way. Love makes women weak but you know what makes them stronger? Betrayal. She'd want nothing to do with you after that." Kuon's inner voice commanded him.

Kuon gulped at the demonic command and looked away. "Kana Kusunoki, Will you marry me?"

Kyoko eagerly nodded with tears in her eyes but stopped when she registered what he said. Her lips parted as her smile fell. She felt shattered. Her happy tears turned into heartbreaking tears in a second. "What?" She whispered to herself.

Kana Kusunoki confidently walked towards Kuon Hizuri. Kyoko mindlessly saw the scene unfolding before her.

Her mind failed to comprehend everything that was happening.

Kana smiled slyly as she took the mic from Kuon's hands and threw it on the ground.

"Yes!" She exclaimed as stepped closer to him and placed a kiss on his lip. The audience gathered around them cheered for the couple.

Kuon's parents especially, Jullie Hizuri was happy for her son but Kuon's father, Kuu Hizuri was shocked. He had no idea that Kuon was serious about this girl. He had never really mentioned or talked about her.

Everyone ran towards the happy couple but Kyoko was rooted to her spot. Her body didn't know how to react. She was frozen to a point where she was hardly breathing.

21 years old, Sho Fuwa, Kyoko's childhood buddy couldn't believe what had happened. He was so sure that he completely lost his chance with his bestie but now everything was different. Kuon Hizuri was in a relationship and Kyoko… well, she was heartbroken. He instantly felt bad when he saw tears in her eyes.

Kuon felt lifeless after breaking his princess's heart but he was forced to do so. Kana was glad that finally, Kyoko was out of their relationship. Her biggest threat was now out of the picture. This incident definitely called for a grand celebration later.

As for Kyoko, she was devastated. Her dream man loved someone else.

She was not the one to rule his heart. Reality hit her harder than she had ever expected.

How could he love her when she was only a burden on him? Was she indeed his responsibility only and nothing else?

Was she actually a fool to think of him as someone more than just a guardian or a friend?

Yes, she was! She was foolish.

How could he ever love her when she had no blood relative around herself?

He would never love someone like her? She was a nobody.

She sobbed as looked around wiping her tears furiously. She moved her legs and ran as fast as she could without looking back. She needed to get out of his sight. She needed to run away to some place where she never had to face the bitter truth of being rejected from her beloved. Would she ever be able to get over him? She didn't know the answer but she knew one thing. She would walk out of his life silently even if it hurt her.
