King of Hearts
Or "Better Access"
A tiny insight as to why Remy does a particularly peculiar thing he does.
(Possibly a short anecdote to be incorporated into a longer story later.)
[NOTE: I have no idea if Remy actually does this. It just seemed to make entirely too much sense to me that he did.]
"So, how was target practice, anyway?"
"Oh, Bobby's eyebrows'll grow back eventually…"
Ororo laughed, quirking an eyebrow in curiosity. "What in the name of…"
Remy broke in, "Jubilee threw a shot wild--Remy tempted to believe it weren't no accident, but as yet 'e got no proof…Simply, Monsieur Drake was in the wrong place at decidedly th' wrong time…" He shrugged nonchalantly, one-shouldered, as was the peculiarly Cajun affectation.
"I think Jubilee owes him an apology…But, c'est la guerre…"
"Oui, chere--Or, rather, c'est l'amour…"
"You really think…?"
He nodded, "Remy don't t'ink, chere…Remy know'! 'Sides, if Remy recall correctement, 'e seem t' remember hearin' a story with regard to one Miss Munroe about a young man, a metal bleacher, and a misplaced lightnin' bolt, non?"
She chuckled, "In the Goddess' Name, I had no idea he'd be sitting there…Pure coincidence…And it was only a small burn, really…Just in a very…bad location…"
She cringed at the memory of what sort of pain she had so obviously, albeit inadvertently, inflicted upon the young man.
Remy had the nerve to laugh outright as the two stepped over his threshold.
Ororo noticed something "off" out of the corner of her eye. She made a quarter-turn to try and determine just what it was. She saw it then--Five cards, splayed out in a "hand" formation facedown on his nightstand.
*Why whatever could that be?* she wondered.
Just then, Remy stepped up behind her, answering her unspoken question.
"I leave those there for better access, chere--If, God forbid, someone broke in here or somethin', no sense in fumblin' 'round f'r a pack 'a cards in the dead of night, now is there?"
She nodded. "Makes sense," she answered, stepping closer and as she did so overturning the hand. She paused to ponder it for a moment.
"Four aces--and a king." She quirked a light half-smile with her observation.
He nodded. "Oui. King 'a hearts."
She turned and smiled a little more broadly, looking him in the eye, taking this statement and running with it. "Always."
He stepped closer then and kissed her.
King of hearts, indeed.
