JUST OUTSIDE TOPANGA'S

Joshua Matthews was far from perfect, remembering the first drink before adulthood and legality, or the promiscuous flirting with a high school senior as a freshman, that could be said of Josh; he had made some very bad moves. However that leaves the wiser decisions to stick out in his life, and one highlight was on his mind. A certain blonde, a certain ski lodge

Josh likes Maya Penelope Hunter

Her grin, the shimmer of hope in her eyes, the golden locks that fell perfectly to the sides of her face, her strong persistence in the hardships she had overcome, the way her eyes flickered every time she saw hope in her life catch ablaze once more, the way she could go on looking and talking about art with him for hours.

Josh REALLY likes Maya Penelope Hunter

Josh chuckled to himself, recalling the night of the college party crash. Younger and dumber, Josh was ever gladder that people grow and change; people change people. The middle brother of the Matthews siblings was always seen as a role model by Josh, that had been there since childhood and continued on since the present. It was changing however, Josh started noting the ways how Cory and Topanga had managed their love for one another, and it carried on as his own hope that a love similar, not the same, might find him one day; unknown to Josh, his heart knew already who he wanted, which is what lead him to the place he stood before job application in hand. The bell for Topanga's rang as he entered.

ABIGAIL ADAMS HIGH

Cory Matthews excitedly wrote on the board the subject of today, the words springing from his hand as natural as a coursing stream

England 1765, Ireland 1916

"What do they have in common?" asked Mr. Matthews

A moment of silence occurred, but both Farkle and Smackle had a look in their eye, to which Cory Matthews sighed and knew all too well that they would be his only contenders to answer the question correctly

"Farkle" he pointed at the young brunette clad in blacks and grays, a lax demeanor

"England had put through the stamp act in 1765, Ireland had a rebellion that had been set off by nationalism in 1916"

"Correct, but why are they significant Smackle?" Mr. Matthews questioned

"Both began major revolutions that would change the fate of people, and nations forever" Smackle answered, Farkle's eyes glimmered and though he said nothing, he and Smackle shared what almost appeared as flattering small grins at one another.

"Well done Smackle" stated Mr. Matthews as he wrote and underlined the word 'Revolution' "The main focus of this discussion is that a pivotal part of history is the belief of new beginnings" Mr. Matthews added "Revolution brings change and change brings an evolution in anything and everything" Mr. Matthews stared at the board "As it is today, I feel like its a time for new beginnings, and from that I want you to write about something you want to take as a major foundation for treating this time as a new beginning. Write it on paper, limitless word count, and have it passed in two days from now"

With that, the bell rang.

New Beginnings

Maya Hunter had the two words of their latest assignment from her second father figure stuck on repeat in her head. She would hold her tongue til the day she died but Maya actually did enjoy the assignments and teachings of Cory Matthews, he was a good teacher. However, a different Matthews now plagued her mind, one who might as well have an apartment for how much he lived in her thoughts

Maya likes Joshua "Josh" Gabriel Matthews

When he had been doing baseball, and she wanted to take a swing at it, he helped her with stance and meeting the ball. She remembers his smile with pride after she hit it halfway across the field. She remembered how he spared no expense when she crashed just time with Riley and him, Josh would gift her the snacks he brought for himself. He was always asking how she was and he would listen diligently. It would be five years til Maya actually interacted again with Josh, but the girl's feelings not only remained but had grown. The now older figure of Josh just about made her breathless upon contact with those piercing blues, an endless smile that wouldn't leave her face. He had called her Gorgeous, and she had already deemed him Boing. Maya had seen his way of wanting his older brother to be proud of him, the way he treated Auggie who looked up to him, and she herself found….

Maya REALLY likes Josh Gabriel Matthews

Maya let out a dreamy sigh, it had been a few months since the Ski Lodge; in some ways, she still couldn't believe that day had still actually happened. Her feelings had only escalated more as Josh had stepped aside during the bear incident to make sure she wouldn't miss out on life; it was one of the most selfless moments she had ever seen Josh make and if he had feared doing so, he left nothing to encourage such thoughts. Speaking of which, she felt the rumble of her phone going off

Boing: Ferret

Ferret: Boing

Boing: So you know that job I was mentioning earlier, the one that would give me a bit of spending money?

Maya grinned, she had remembered Josh being really excited about this job; Just because they weren't in a relationship, didn't mean they didn't stick close to one another, in fact, if both her and Josh were asked; they knew they never wanted the other out of the loop, regardless of dates or distances. Hence why they had been texting one another constantly since the Ski Lodge. She just wished it was a close one, instead of….instead of…

come to think of it, Maya had been too distracted with Josh that she never even asked him what the job was

Ferret: How did the interview go?

Boing: I'm not only hired, but I start immediately today to get the ropes :)

Ferret: I'm so proud of you Josh

Josh would be lying if he had told anyone he hadn't become flustered at Maya giving him praise

Boing: Thank you, Maya

Ferret: Boing, where is this job?

Boing: I'll show you later tonight ;)

This time it was Maya who began to fluster, but she remained excited to see where Josh was headed for work-wise. With that, she packed up her stuff and headed out of the classroom.

HEADED TO TOPANGA'S

"So peaches, how's my uncle?" Riley let a smile come across her face at Maya whose face quickly grew a large grin "Josh is wonderful Riles" said Maya, she started even walking a little faster at the mention of him; Maya figured this is what a walk to Topanga's with Riley had due for her, another interrogation.

"Rumor has it that Topanga's has a new worker" Riley smirked "Oh?" asked Maya, now curious from this change of subject

"Yeah, the high school girls are saying he's hot, the college girls are attempting their best to flirt with him" Riley added as she hummed along, nearly skipping at this point as Maya just walked quickly in tow of her "I take it we are going to see this adonis today on our trip to study at Topanga's with the rest of the gang?" Maya wasn't gonna lie, she was curious about the odd man

"Yeah I figured that he would take your mind off my uncle for a bit, and you can ignore the long game for a bit too" Maya sighed, knowing full well that Riley wasn't the most accepting of her and Joshes agreement to have a moment someday nor did she understand it fully "Well, it seems we will find out right now" they had ended up at the door of the bakery

TOPANGA'S

As they entered the building, Maya and Riley were greeted by the scents of chocolate, of pastries warmed and heated, of hot coffees and teas, and it never got old partnered with the sound of students, both college and high school, hard at work. At one of the tables sat none other than the original two workers of the establishment, Topanga Matthews and Katy Hunter who were immediately were greeted by their daughters

"Mother" Riley smiled while taking said mother into a hug

"Daughter," said Topanga returning the smile and hug, followed by taking a sip of coffee

"Ma," said Maya smiling, bringing her own mother into a hug; something Katy never shot down but rather happily returning

"Baby Girl" she lovingly responded

"Riles gave me a rumor that apparently you have a new handsome worker, not my ma" Maya grinned at Topanga, who nearly spit her coffee at the mention of the new worker "They've been crowding him for an hour and a half now" Katy added "pray to tell why was my daughter was talking about him?" asked Topanga, a raised eyebrow

"I felt if anything it might take Maya's mind off Josh," said Riley, twiddling her fingers nervously

"Oh, that's gonna be a slight issue," said Topanga, gripping her mug a little more firmly

"O-oh?" Riley stuttered out as she gave her mother a quizzical look, though she wouldn't be curious for long

"Riles you were right, that new guy takes my mind right off your uncle" Maya now had a large smile on her face as she stared dreamily at the register, to which Riley turned and let out a single "oh boy"

At the register now, in a uniform (that really showed the muscle in his arms to Maya's delight), clad in also a black apron, was none other than Joshua Matthews himself. He had just got done serving two college girls when his eyes connected with Maya's, causing butterflies to flutter in what felt like swarms from her stomach. Maya turned back to Riley, to which Riley sighed "So, I think I found my new favorite thing on Topanga's Menu"

"Maya!" Topanga looked at Maya with a look of high accusation, which Maya would have taken more seriously if she couldn't tell that Topanga herself was trying to hold in a laugh, as was her own mother. Maya shrugged "Hey, gotta be fierce, am I right not my ma" to which earned a smirk from the lawyer, and with that Maya headed off to the register.

"So this is the job you were talking about Boing?" Maya said, her own piercing blue eyes regaining the connection to Joshes baby blues, she always loved to get lost in them "Yeah Ferret, don't tell anyone but I figured I could use this job to get close and involved in this girl's life" Josh gave a playful smirk

"She must be very special to have your eye," said Maya, her grin only growing larger

"Gorgeous inside and out," said Josh without hesitation, his eyes showing he meant it in his heart, Maya disconnected from his eyes as she turned bright red and felt her knees give way; in a game of nerves Josh had just won

How do you always have this effect on me?

"So this is a long-term thing then?" Maya asked as she did her best to regain her stance "Yeah, just because it's a long game doesn't mean I don't want to be close to you now" Josh said as he cleaned out a mug over the sinks; if Maya wasn't swooning already, she knew that would have put her on the floor "long game?" she asked, Josh stopped what he was doing and to her surprise walked over to her only to put his hand over hers, their fingers interlocking along with their eyes as Josh smiled "long game"

Around the bakery were the other friends preparing to gather and study, however one remained absent much to Farkle's sadness and the gang clearly noticed "A world of our own: A study in Alternate Universal theory?" asked Zay as picked up the book off the top of the pile Farkle had with him

"It's oddly fascinating, I've been diving into the theory of alternate universes lately," said Farkle taking the book back with Zay slowly having a soft smile come over him that only Riley noticed, successfully having Farkle distracted from the absence of his girlfriend

"Why?" asked Zay

"I feel like things have changed but I can't name how like somehow things have shifted in a focus from one way to another," said Farkle, his eyes passing over Maya and Josh talking about a topic they seemed to both feel strongly about and enjoy discussing, probably art

"If we were in Riley Town, just if, then we are," said Farkle staring off, taking notice of the flicker in both Joshes and Mayas eyes as they connected together "straight out of Riley Town, deep into Mayaville" he grinned, Zay just shook his head at the poetic quotes of his friend.

"Hope I'm not too late" Lucas greeted the rest of the group as he entered through the door, "only by half an hour Huckleberry" stated Maya across the bakery, Riley however happily skipped over to Lucas; they had their own eye conversations but which ended with Riley jumping into the arms of Lucas

"Boyfriend," said Riley

"Girlfriend," said Lucas

"Why were you late?" asked Riley, her hand cupping Lucas' cheek "I had some things to deal with," said Lucas, his eyes suddenly having a sadness to them; Riley gained a new face of concern "Bay Window?" she asked which earned a light chuckle from Lucas as he looked back at her with a sense of happiness "later," he says softly, with which they all gathered up and began to study.

Maya took a single look around her, her friends studying, her mom talking with her second mom they had become so close, then her sole attention was the guy of her dreams who had finally admitted impossibly that he liked her, she liked him….and he liked her. Hope wasn't for suckers, but a new idea had popped into her mind, something she thought would be a great start of a new beginning; she took out her pen and simply wrote

Have faith

NEARBY TRAIN STATION

A young man and younger woman get off the train, bags in tow. The man has bright brown eyes, black short curly hair, a warm smile on his face standing at 5ft. 8 while the woman looks with wonder all around her, before her single green and single blue eyes returning back to the man; she was 5 ft. with nearly peachy skin, freckles on her cheeks and golden blonde hair "Is this close?" the woman asks "Yeah, what an adventure already" said the man as he took out a photo of some children altogether, seven exactly; one a brunette with notably baby blue eyes.
