Content warning: mentions of death and animal abuse
A small cockapoo pup roamed the streets of Escapadis (Esc•a•pad•is), a small, yet busy and well-produced town. The small cockapoo was just barely days old, but all by herself. She was the runt of her litter. Her other siblings died soon after birth, and her mother, a cocker spaniel, died the day afterwards. Her father, a poodle, had survived. But earlier that day, he was mercilessly thrown into the back of a man's car. The streets of Escapadis were kept very clean; although this was bad news for the strays, as they relied mainly on the humans' leftovers for food. She had barely eaten since her birth, and was likely going to die in a few days' time. A white van pulled up to the curb besides the cockapoo pup. The door of the van opened, and the pup curled up into a ball. A young man exited from the van.
"Hey there, little fella," he said, in a calm voice.
The pup shivered in fear, and whimpered.
The man reached into his van and pulled out a patterned cage, equipped with a bowl of warm milk and food. The man set the cage down on the ground besides the young cockapoo, and inched towards her.
"Come on," he said, in a soothing tone. "Don't worry; I'm not going to hurt you."
The pup sniffed the cage, and was tempted by the smell of food. Her stomach growled, as if it knew food was right in front of her. She decided to enter the cage. She happily lapped the milk, and munched the food. The man quietly closed the door while she eating and put her in the van. The pup was too busy gulping down her food to notice anything.
Shortly afterwards, they had arrived at a dog shelter. The man carried out the cage into the shelter. He set the cage in a small area, among many other areas the same size. Most of the other areas had a dog in each one. He opened the door of the cage, and the pup ran out into the area her cage was set in. The area had a bed and some pet toys. Once she exited the cage, the man lifted the cage and looked inside of it, seeing that both bowls were completely empty.
"You had quite an appetite," the man softly exclaimed, with a chuckle.
He patted the pup before exiting the room.
The young cockapoo wandered the area. She came across a rubber ball and nosed it around. She then found a rubber bone and wasn't sure what to do with it. She poked at it a bit. She then picked it up and it squeaked! She bit down on it again and, again, it squeaked. She liked the squeaking sound. After playing with the squeaky bone a few more times, she approached a mouse toy. He lightly pushed it, then the mouse rolled a bit. It startled the pup. She pushed it again, but this time she expected it to move. The nice man that brought her to the shelter returned to the room. He kneed down to peek at the young cockapoo, and saw her push the mouse toy another time. He chuckled, then turned the key on the mouse to wind it up. The mouse started racing around the room. The pup ran to the corner of her area, scared.
"There, there," the man reassured the pup, while petting her. "It's all good."
He did the same with the mouse, and this time the cockapoo pup chased it around the area.
Then, another human entered the room.
"Good, you're here," the man cheerfully spoke. He got off of his knees. "She's a small pup, very for a cockapoo. Only days old, too."
The other human nodded his head positively, then boomed "She's a lovely pup! With just a bit of training and grooming, I'm sure people will fall in love with her."
The man happily chuckled, then looked at the pup. He thought the same, as well.
Author's note: Escapadis is pretty much what you'd get if you smashed Adventure Bay and Adventure City together. It's a neighboring town of Adventure Bay too. It's name is based off the word "Escapade", which is synonymous with "Adventure".
The cover image is young Skye gazing up at an airplane, where her love for flight began.
