Joren's Ordeal

Joren was lying on the floor, trying to gather the energy to stand. He was breathing hard and shivering. He had just gone through more terror and pain then he thought possible. It should be over now. I have beaten it. It wasn't.

A face appeared over him; somehow he knew it was the face of the Chamber. "You have all the qualities that should make a great knight, but you're mind is closed. If you were to become a knight you would hurt the ones you were supposed to protect. I would let you die, but they want to try and save you...I don't think they can help, but..." If faded away.

As Joren got up a figure walked out of the shadows. Joren couldn't make out the face. Peering closer he almost gasped, but stopped him self in time. Mustn't make a sound.

"Do you not recognise me Joren?" it asked. Joren could not quite pinpoint just what was strange about it. "You should know me. I see you every day." It raised its hand. This is just a ploy to get me to talk. Joren sneered. Images swirled around him. "See me as I am."

A page is kneeling on the floor, cleaning up something that Joren has spilled on purpose. Joren hits him to get him to hurry. The page looks up at him...the image swirls into another.

A servant is walking past and accidentally spills what she was carrying, some of it splashes on Joren. He yells at her, verbally abusing her. She just stands there and takes it. The servant looks him in the eyes.

The Lump barges in on a hazing session, Joren and his gang fight her. She is outnumbered, but she keeps fighting. Keladry looks at him.

More and more scenes flash before him, in each one the subject looks at Joren, eyes accusing before flashing to a new one. Then all the images swirl and form into the thing that was there first.

It looks at him. "That is what I am, any person you have ever looked down on. You think almost everyone is lower then your self. This is wrong. Admit that you are wrong, that all things are equal in the eyes of the Gods and the Chamber. Admit and you will leave this room."

And if I don't? He asked furious, he was shaken up but confident in him self. It didn't answer. I had the right in every case. Now let me out. I have passed; I didn't speak or make a sound.

Turning it spoke. "We tried...he is yours now." With that it dissolved into the darkness.

Joren looked around triumphant, expecting to see the doors opening. But all he saw was darkness. Strangely the darkness seemed to be seeping into his skin. He couldn't see it, just feel. What? He thought puzzled, he was having trouble breathing. Suddenly there was a great flash of light.

The Chamber doors opened to his corpse.
