Prologue: The Voice and Millie
The misty sky was cloaked in dark clouds and the moon was no longer visible. A traveler stumbled in the darkness as blood trickled down his side. He was wearing a brown cloak that covered his entire body except for the bloodstain that had soaked completely through the thin cloth.
".Help.m-me," he whispered in a scratchy voice.
No one was around to help our poor traveler as he stumbled across the snow. A thick trail of blood followed the man and he collapsed face down on the snow, dying instantly.
"Donuts!" Vash the Stampede exclaimed as he seized the box of donuts from Meryl Strife's hands.
Meryl rolled her eyes and sighed heavily. "You're welcome, Vash."
Millie Thompson giggled and yawned at the same time.
"You okay, Millie?" Vash asked in between bites.
Millie smiled. "Of course I am! I just didn't get much sleep last night because of my dream." her voice trailed off as she fell into a hypnotic state of mind.
Millie, nice to see you again. Said the masculine voice that had a hint of a southern accent.
Who are you? Millie asked curiously.
Just an old friend.
Then why don't I recognize your voice? Millie demanded.
I knew you when you were very small. You just don't remember me. We were the best of friends. the voice faded in reminiscence.
What's your name? Yoshi Ayashi. That's funny; you don't sound Japanese. I was raised in Texas, Millie. When can I see you?
See me? Why are you in my head? Can't you see me now?
Sort of, Millie. I can only hear your thoughts because of astral projection.
Astral projection? Millie asked. What's that?
Astral projection is an art where you can project your image to another place where you desire, but your physical body stays in the location you are at.
Get out of my head! If you want to see me, come see me to my face! Millie demanded and folded her arms around her sides.
Okay, Millie. I'll see you in a few days.
When exactly?
I can't tell you that.
Why?
Because I love surprises.
What has that to do with anything?
You'll see, my sweet princess. You'll see.
"Millie!"
"Huh?"
Meryl was angry that Millie had worried her to pieces. "You worried us so much!" Then she smiled. "I'm glad you're okay, Millie."
"Me, too. Where we going?"
"You'll see, Millie. You'll see."
Millie froze and began to scream as loud as she could. "NO! LEAVE ME ALONE, DAMN YOU! STAY AWAY FROM MERYL AND VASH, I'M WARNING YOU! I'LL KILL YOU, BASTARD!"
Meryl shook Millie's shoulders and calmed her down. "Millie, don't you like surprises? I love surprises."
The darkness swallowed Millie quicker than a speeding bullet. As she began to pass out, she whispered, "Please, no. Mr. Wolfwood, help me." a single tear fell down her left cheek and fell on the ground.
