Episode 1: Room For One More?

Episode Summary: Miles is formally introduced into the Butterfly family, and everyone finds it to be a bit of an adjustment.

Original Release Date: June 23, 2021

The pitter patter of tiny feet. The sounds of an innocent child's laughter.

Those were the noises that filled the empty hallways of the Butterfly castle as young Miles - having been formally adopted into the Butterfly family only a couple of weeks prior - ran through the halls as quickly as his legs could carry him, finding his way to the stairwell & traversing down all the way to the ground floor, where he dashed towards the throne room. Everyone that was close to the family - Marco, his family, their friends, Buff Frog & his children, etcetera - were waiting there, having set up a mock ceremony not unlike the one they had set up for Star for her mock coronation. This time, though, it wasn't a coronation, and Star was not the center of it. Miles was, and everyone was delighted for it.

In the boy's hands he held flowers - wilted flowers - which he intended to give as presents to the attending guests & his new family. It didn't register to him that the flowers were essentially dead. He was just happy to show his appreciation to his new circle of family. And they were ready & willing to accept them no matter how dead they were. He approached the door leading into the throne room where everyone was waiting for him. He was way too short to reach the door handle, so all he could do was stand there and wait for someone to let him in...not that it bothered him.

Inside the throne room, everyone was excitedly awaiting the arrival of their guest of honor. "Ready?" Marco asked his beloved.

"Yeah. I'm ready." She told her boyfriend with a kiss before turning to her parents. "Are you guys ready?"

"I haven't been this excited for any throne room gathering since the day we gave you the wand." River told her. "Brings back memories..."

"It does, doesn't it?" Moon responded. Before she could say any more, the sound of faint giggling was heard from the outside. That was their cute that Miles was here. Unfortunately, it did not dawn on the guard at the door - in this case, Buff Frog - that the boy was too short to reach the door. Thankfully it only took Star clearing her throat for him to get the message & open the door for him. Sure enough, Miles stood there, dead flowers in hand, and the biggest smile he could possibly have on his face.

"Hiiiii!" He squealed in delight before he ran into the throne room, excitedly jumping from audience member to audience member, either handing them a flower or giving them a hug. Everyone quickly found themselves sucked into Miles's adorable charm. The goofy, sincere, beaming smile on his face perpetuating gratitude for his new home was like a magic spell. As he pitter-pattered his way towards his new family, he found himself with just enough flowers to give to each of them - Moon, River, Globgor, Eclipsa, Meteora, Star, Marco, Rafael, Angie, and Mariposa - and doing the simple task of handing them each a flower was enough to elicit more joyful squeals from the boy. When he was finished handing out the flowers, he immediately dashed towards Star & requested a hug from his new sister.

"Aww, hi you little munchkin." She didn't hesitate to pick him up & hold the boy, smothering him in kisses. "Are you ready?" He rapidly nodded his head & giggled. "Okay, go! Go find mommy!" She put him down & the boy complied, tapping his little feet towards Moon, who subsequently picked him up off the ground & held him in her arms, staring into his beautiful eyes. After kissing his forehead, she put him down in between her & River, facing the crowd.

"Ladies and gentlemen..." Moon began to announce to the group. "Thank you all for joining us on this marvelous day." She motioned over to Eclipsa, who took out a small crown and walked over to behind Miles, ready to place it on his head. "We are more than proud to introduce the newest member of the Butterfly family..." And Eclipsa gently placed the crown on top of Miles's head. The boy initially reacted with confusion, remaining motionless to allow himself time to process what was happening. "Miles Butterfly!" But upon hearing his now official new legal name, he exploded into loud giggles & cheers, stamping his feet all over the place & applauding, as everyone surrounding him and in the audience joined in it.

Once the applause began dying down, Star ran up to her new brother & embraced him, holding him up high for all to see. The boy, for his part, continued laughing uncontrollably. The sparkles her eyes produced showcased a Star that was vastly different from the one that entered the new cleaved world, one that had fought relentlessly to combat her fatigue & depression. The introduction of Miles into her life all those months ago - as well as her subsequent employment at the orphanage - proved to be the jolt she needed to jumpstart her recovery.

"Miles, is there anything you'd like to say?" Star asked her new brother. The wheels in the boy's head began to spin. She put him on the ground, facing the crowd, who eagerly awaited whatever he had to say to them.

"This..." He pointed to Star with his little finger. "This is my sister." Then he turned to face her & stuck his little arms out, requesting a hug. "I love you." Needless to say she didn't leave him hanging. A loud "awww" was heard from the crowd. At last, Miles had his forever home.

When the "ceremony" ended, everyone in the crowd immediately departed & returned to their own lives. This left just the Diaz family & the Butterfly family. Now it was time to help Miles get acclimated to his new sleeping arrangements. For the time being, he would be bunking with Star in her room, as they showcased the bed they had built for him from scratch. It wasn't anything overly special to an outsider, but to someone like Miles, who dreamed of having his own bed in his own home, it was everything. His happy squeals & cheering helped quell any concerns that he wouldn't like it.

He raced to his bed & quickly examined it, loving every inch of it without even touching it. "You like it?" Star asked him, to which he replied by turning his head to her, nodding his head rapidly, and resuming guffawing over the bed.

"We all worked so hard on it." Moon lamented. "I'm so happy he loves it."

When Miles was finished admiring his new bed, he turned to his new family again & started dashing towards them, sticking his arms out & asking for a hug, which they all obliged. He then reached for Star's hand, grabbing it & leading her towards the bed itself. He kept pointing at it, asking her to try it out for him. Star couldn't help but give a laugh. "Miles, honey, I'm too big for your bed. I won't fit."

"No..." He playfully shook his head and disagreed, continuing to point at it. Finally she gave up & acquiesced. She slowly climbed into the tiny bed - careful to not break it - and put the small blanket over her body; it wasn't at all big enough to cover her, so to the outsider, she looked silly trying to fit herself into his small bed. Fortunately for them all, it wasn't enough to break the bed. All it could elicit was laughter from everyone in the room, Miles & Star included. "Do you like the bed?"

Star continued giggling as he got out & approached her new brother, picking him up & tucking him into the bed to have him test it out. "I do. Do you like it?" After a moment of silence, a smile crossed his face again & he nodded. "Oh I'm so glad!" Then she untucked him & held him in her arms, holding him as closely to her as she could.

"Oh dear, we need to get going!" Eclipsa exclaimed, noticing the time. "Members of the city council will be arriving any time now."

"Oh, shoot, that's right! We have the meeting about the new housing arrangements to help the monsters."

'Help' was the trigger word for Miles. He perked up & looked all around at those in the room with him. He wanted to be included. "Help."

"...What's that, sweetie?" Star asked his cute, curious face.

"Can I help too?" He asked ever so innocently, drawing short "aww's" from the lot.

"Honey, it's okay. You don't have to get involved." Star tried to reason with her new brother. "This is not...this isn't stuff that someone as young as you needs to be involved with. It's our job to deal with it." She tried to let him down metaphorically as gently as she could, but his sullen, disappointed eyes quickly quelled that. "Oh don't do that, sweetie, we're just trying to protect you."

He rapidly shook his head. "No..." He moaned. "I want to help."

"Perhaps it wouldn't be such a bad idea to introduce him early into our...ahem, legacy." Moon countered thoughtfully. "Not that he'll ever have a royal throne to ascend to when he becomes of age, but perhaps when he's older he'll decide he wants to follow in our footsteps & admirably serve the people around him."

"If he wants to do that." Star quickly pointed out. "Don't forget things are completely different now. He actually gets a choice of what he wants to do." She turned back to her brother. "He could choose to be a professional athlete. Or a singer." She then turned on her "doting on her baby brother" switch. "Or he could be an airplane. Do you want to be an airplane?" Without hesitation, the little tyke began blowing a raspberry as Star slowly lifted him up and down in the air, sputtering out insane laughter in between. "Sweetie you don't have to do this. You can stay here in our room & play with my toys while we're gone." Little did he know that his new family had a whole parcel of gifts ready to bestow on him when they were finished with their obligations for the day. But the darling would not be dissuaded. He pointed to the others behind her, slightly whining. "No, I think he wants to help us."

"Aww, how sweet." Eclipsa noted. "Such a good boy."

"Alright, little man, let's get you dressed up nice." Marco walked over to Star's closet & rummaged through, pulling out a green bowtie - Miles's favorite color was green, except for all the other colors - and gently placing it on his shirt. There wasn't time - or a need, frankly - to gussy him up too much, but he figured that would be enough to suffice. For Miles at least, it sure was. For Star, this was especially true. She was outright smitten over how adorable he looked.

"Look at our little man. D'oh, you're so cute with your little bowtie & that gorgeous smile." She grabbed him & hugged him once more before it was time to depart. "Alright, we better get going."

So they all made it downstairs. While Marco & his folks pledged to wait it out - as well as babysit Meteora - while the Butterfly family was busy with the political stuff, Miles was incredibly determined to be a helpful force for whatever they were trying to accomplish that day. A knock on the door, and the family all prepared themselves for the work ahead. Moon answered the door; standing there was the mayor of Echo Creek, as well as a few others in suits who worked closely with the mayor...as well as Buff Frog awkwardly standing in the background with a bowtie on his shirt. Yes, he returned to his hut from the fake ceremony just to grab his bowtie. Because he's Buff Frog. All of them were holding papers or posters of some kind.

"Miss Butterfly...shall we get to work?" The mayor said bluntly.

"Of course." She stepped back to allow them entry into the home. "I'm sure you'll all be happy to know that my daughter will be joining us for these meetings." Upon being introduced, Star nervously waved to the mayor and his assistants, who all raised an eyebrow themselves.

"...I see." And it was clear that they had not anticipated her joining them. "I'm not so sure that will be necessary. I'm sure the combined knowledge of you and the other council members will more than suffice."

"Nonsense. This is all a part of the long-term rebuilding project Star had begun undertaking months ago. Her knowledge & expert insight is invaluable."

"Oh I'm sure it is. But can we expect some...quality production during this meeting from someone that hasn't consistently been engaged in these important matters?" The implication was as clear & blatant as it could possibly get: they didn't think Star would be of much help to them, incorrectly assuming that she had largely sat out of the political game over the last six plus months given her outbreak of depression & mental illness.

"If you think our pride & joy has been merely lounging around & ignoring the dealings of the world at large, you are sorely mistaken." Moon's tone quickly turned sharp & annoyed. "Admittedly, we wish that she had done so..." They made it no secret that they wish Star had taken even more time to step away & relax. "But no one has been more devoted to the cause than she. She will be joining us today to offer her insight, and I can assure you you'll be quite pleased with her contributions." A brief, awkward silence followed. It was a touchy subject...one that officials in power often did not tread lightly with. But Moon would not be deterred. Her daughter's integrity would be protected at all costs.

"Yeah!" And as evidenced by Miles's loud squeal of support & subsequent hugging of her leg, Moon was not nearly the only one interested in protecting Star. "Star's a good sister! She's smart and...and she loves us!" He positioned himself directly in front of Star, as if he was acting as a human shield for her, which earned him a head pat from the proud sister. The City Hall officials just shrugged it off and started walking towards the stairs, with Moon leading the way. The rest of the family followed closely behind, while Marco & his folks waited downstairs.

The meeting was extensive & detailed, proving that it would be no walk in the park for any of them. Miles, for his part, wasn't fooling around or showing himself as a distraction. He was intently listening, even if he didn't quite understand what was being said.

"Simply put, we can't justify construction of more housing in this area." One of the city hall officials explained, using a visual chart he brought along as a reference. "There is simply no more room, the grid simply cannot justify their existence."

"Yes, you've made that quite clear to us." Moon replied in a rather deadpanned & unimpressed tone. "What we're saying is you've failed to offer a viable alternative to the problem. Merely stating "this won't work" is not sufficient."

"With all due respect, ma'am, we're not made out of money. We only have so much wiggle room in our budget."

"Forgive me if I don't share your concerns with the frugality of paper currency. The well-beings of all of our citizens should not be left in the hands of financial limitations."

While Moon & the city hall official were having their heated discussion, Miles's eyes wandered to the charts bared out for them. One of them was a blueprint of the area they were arguing over; a line of multiple homes adjacent to an open pond. The wheels in his head slowly began to turn as he searched frantically for a way to contribute to the cause, one that he still didn't understand in the slightest. He looked over at his sister, who appeared to be just as unimpressed with the people from city hall as everyone else. The corner of her eye caught his innocent & curious stare, and so she decided to devote her attention to him. "Hey, buddy. I know, this stuff is boring, but-" Without even thinking, he started to tug on her dress & point to the blueprint. "No Miles, that's not a pretty drawing, that's a blueprint. We're trying to figure out where we can put more housing."

"By the water!" Was his response, in just a low enough whisper that nobody else heard him but Star.

"...By the..." A double take on the blueprint quickly made it clear what he was referring to. "By the water?"

"By the water!" He said again, this time getting up out of his seat & waddling his way over to the blueprint, gradually drawing everyone's attention to him. "Excuse me!" He announced politely. "I have an idea!" He politely turned to the blueprint and began pointing at the space indicating a lake. "We can put the peoples...by the...by the water. And then they can all say hi, and then they can all go swimming or...and..." He frantically looked around the room. It was safe to say that the silence was deafeningly uncomfortable. The city hall officials weren't particularly amused, while his family sat back in an awkward quiet that quickly rose flags for Miles. The boy began to visibly struggle. Star took the initiative to approach him.

"You're saying we put houses here and let them circle this lake?" She asked him, trying to entertain him temporarily to keep his spirits lifted. "Make a little community here?"

He rapidly nodded his head. "Yes! And they can go swimming!"

"Okay...and how many houses do you think we can fit?"

"All of them!" He didn't have a clue. How could he? He was four. But he was trying his best. Star ruffled his hair & hugged him as they were joined by the rest of the family.

"You're so smart. But we...can't do that."

The boy's face fell. "Why not?"

"There's no infrastructure to support any homes here. They won't have any access to electricity, clean drinking water, any sort of essential utilities that any home needs to prosper. And it would take a long time and a lot of resources to create an infrastructure feasible enough to make this a livable area. It just isn't feasible right now because we need an immediate solution." While it was obvious he wasn't fully understanding what she was conveying, he was doing his best to follow along. "Do you understand?"

The look of deflation on the boy's face told her that he understood enough. "...Oh..."

"B-But thank you for you input! You tried!" She tried to cheer him up quickly before any of the city hall people spoke up.

"Now if only we could have some practical solutions." One of them nasally mouthed off, irking the Butterfly family.

"Excuse me." Especially Moon. "At least he's paying attention & attempting to offer solutions of some kind. I'm sure the lot of you assumed he wouldn't be of any use at this meeting."

"Forgive me, former queen, but...he is little boy." Buff Frog approached out of concern. The mere acknowledgement sent Miles into a laughing fit.

"Yes. And he wanted to be here. To help us." The boy kept pointing to the blueprint, trying desperately to make his brain think of another idea. But he was quickly calmed by Star, who took it upon herself to pick him him & shower him with affection.

"At least he's trying. You can't realistically fault him. He's a child for the love of corn." Eclipsa now also went to bat for the lovable boy. She too approached the child. "Star, perhaps we should let your brother go and play with Marco while we finish in here."

"NO I can help." Miles pleaded, clearing in fear that he was disappointing his new loved ones.

"Miles, sweetheart..." Star turned his adorable body around & faced him. "How old are you?"

After a moment of clear wheel-turning in his brain, he held up four fingers. "Four." He said innocently.

"Right.. You're a child. You're a little boy. You shouldn't have to feel like you need to be here with us."

"Yes, b-" Miles soon found himself being put into Moon's arms. The mother cradled the boy as tightly as she could. "Mommy-"

"Miles, darling..." She kissed his adorable forehead and brought him up to her eye level. "As your mother, I'm asking you to go play with Star's lovely boyfriend. You'll get to play with his sister & Eclipsa's daughter too. You'll have a wonderful time." Moon felt her heart break witnessing the boy's demoralized attitude. "We'll come find you as soon as we're done. Then we can give you your housewarming gifts. Would you like that?" And that was enough to slowly lift his spirits. "Oh, there's that smile we all love." She brought him to the door just as he began to giggle uncontrollably. She opened the door to see Marco & his folks - plus the two babies - still in the lobby, patiently waiting. The sound of the open door drew their attention as they all bared witness to Moon putting Miles carefully down on the floor & encouraging him to run to the teen. And he did so with almost no hesitation.

"Everything okay, Mrs. Butterfly?" Marco asked, to which she nodded & smiled.

"Yes. It's all well and good. But would you be a dear & keep an eye on the little guy. I don't think we'll be much longer." Miles jumping into Marco's arms unapologetically basically answered the question for him.

"Of course. We'll keep him safe & out of trouble." Marco warmly replied, holding the ball & caressing his hair, eliciting more giggles out of him. He waved to his new mother as she returned to the room to continue the meeting, leaving the Diaz family, Meteora, & Miles out on their own to entertain themselves.

And entertain they did. Marco brought the babies up to Star's room & pulled out some of her own toys for them to play with, engaging with them as any lovely babysitter would. Miles had no trouble keeping himself entertained, both with the litany of toys at his disposal & the two adorable babies Mariposa & Meteora ready & willing to play with him however he saw fit. Although for the most part, the way he saw fit was just to sit them down & hold them in his arms, hugging them as tightly as he could while eliciting laughter from them. When it came time to play with Marco & his parents, they engaged in rousing games of "Peek-a-Boo" & "Hide And Seek" to keep the boy preoccupied.

At last, after what seemed like forever, Star & her family finally returned to the room to greet Miles. Star knocked on the door, garnering everyone's attention. "Guess who?" Just the sound of her voice was more than sufficient in elevating Miles's mood, as he immediately stood up - still holding the other two babies - and began running up to her. Everyone got in a good laugh at the sight of him holding Mariposa & Meteora in his arms. "What are you doing, you silly little angel?"

"Hi Star!" He said proudly, asking for her to pick the three of them up. With a few chuckles, Eclipsa picked up Meteora, Marco approached them to pick up Mariposa, and Star picked up Miles.

"Did you have fun with Marco & the babies?" He nodded rapidly. "Oh good!"

"How did things go with city hall?" Marco asked, quickly changing the subject in the hopes that they could address it quickly & move on.

"...Not particularly well."

"We failed to come to any sort of consensus on the monster housing issue." Moon lamented. "Then again I suppose I should've seen the writing on the wall. Tensions were much more fierce once Miles left the room. They didn't take too kindly to us standing up for him & his efforts."

"But why? Was he disruptive?" Angie inquired. "Uncooperative?"

"Oh no, not at all. The exact opposite, in fact." River defended his new son. "He was attentive all the way through."

"It was beyond adorable to see the light bulb go off in his head." Eclipsa added.

"I didn't even think it was a bad idea." Globgor jumped in. "A body of water with a surrounding cul-de-sac of homes? If done right, it could be a truly progressive & beneficial environment for the town & the town at large. The infrastructure just isn't there at the moment."

"But no, it was that he was young boy that was the problem. A young boy eager to help and...probably eager to please his new family." Moon looked over at Miles, who had cradled himself tightly into Star's arms. "He was a perfect angel while he was with us."

"I helped..." Miles lightly whined, burying his face in Star's body. His sister kissed the top of his head and chuckled.

"Yes, Miles, you tried to help. But see..." He handed her over to Moon, who was eager to hold her new son. "We're not trying to keep you out because we don't think you can help. We don't want you to get sucked in because you're a kid. You're a child. You should have to right to act & play like a child. Your sister...didn't have that privilege. None of us did, really." Looking over at his sister & seeing her suddenly fallen face, he pointed frantically to her & quietly whined. "Sweetie, if we need your help, we'll tell you. We promise. You don't have to worry."

"Did I do good?"

Such an innocent question, but one with depressing undertones. Moon held her son even tighter. "Yes, sweetie. Yes you did good. We're all so proud of you. And we all love you so much."

"I love you too Mommy. I love you."

"Hey, is it time for the housewarming gifts?" Marco asked, finally barging in on the conversation again. Miles's eyes began to light up.

"Would you look that, sweetums?" Moon asked, her own joy rising alongside his. "Would you like your presents?" And without a second thought, he began squealing & bouncing up and down. "You know you're a good boy, don't you? Yes you do! Yes you are." And so Miles was placed gently back on the ground while the family left the room briefly to go fetch said gifts for Miles, leaving Marco, his family, and the other two babies behind again to watch over him. Miles, being the only way he knew how to be, approached the two babies and began to smother them with affection yet again. Neither provided any sort of objection, though. At last, the family returned, each carrying at least one wrapped present box in their hands. Upon seeing his new family return, his eyes lit up and he gently released his grip on the babies. The family all placed their boxes on the floor, eagerly awaiting for him to open them.

"Okay, Miles! It's time for your housewarming presents! We worked really hard on these, I'm sure you'll lo-" Nope. That wasn't even in his mind at the moment. He saw his family return, and he ran straight past the boxes & into Star's welcoming arms, much to her delight. "We love you, Miles. Soooo much. We know it won't be easy, but we're gonna make this family work. For all of us."

"I love you." He eeked out before smothering her face with his adorable kisses. Star soon put him down near the boxes as everyone in the room gathered around. Their attention was completely devoted to watching the boy open his presents & squeal in delight as each one revealed itself to them. But internally, to the boy and to the folks around him, what the gifts were didn't matter. What mattered to him was that he was surrounded by people that were dedicated to loving him & raising him exactly for who he was. His disability would not deter them or him. And what mattered to them was that this adorable, loving boy was willing & able to look past all of their warts, all of their faults, all of their scars as people & welcome them into his heart without a second thought. And it was a perfect encapsulation of the life - of the world - they all wanted to help create.

End of Episode 1!

Well, how's that for a reentry? I don't expect this story to follow exactly the same structure as the previous one - for one thing I doubt the chapters will be nearly as long - but I still intend to give it the same heart & soul that every book in this series has had. I also don't think it'll have as quick of a release schedule as the previous book did. I definitely have hit a bit of a lull in terms of creative output, but I'm not going away anytime soon, and I hope you'll all join me on the continuation of our favorite dorks' epic adventures on Earthni.

And as always, please read & review.
