Darkness and voices. Blinking my eyes a couple of times, I stared up
at the wooden ceiling over head, then slowly turned my gaze to the two men
standing just inside of the doorway. Though they were trying to be quiet,
their voices carried like they were talking in a cave or a tomb.
".she shouldn't have."
"Have you ever tried to convince her not to do something, Haldir?" Orophin stated as he folded his arms over his chest. "You know how impossibly stubborn she can be."
"You were in charge, you should have known better than to let her try something so foolish." Haldir replied as he glared at him.
Orophin sighed as he rubbed the bridge of his nose. He and Haldir had been standing just inside of the healer's flet for almost two hours waiting to hear some word on Narwain. "Regardless of what you might think, Haldir. I didn't actually have time to discuss the matter with her. She does tend to act before she thinks sometimes."
"I know." Haldir said. "It's just that she."
"If your going to talk about some one at least make sure that their not awake while you're doing so." I said as I tried to sit up, but the pain in my side convinced me other wise. "Why am I the only one that seems to get hurt when Orophin is in charge?"
"If you weren't so stubborn you wouldn't get hurt." Haldir said as a slight smile crossed his face. "How do you feel by the way?"
"Like I fell out of a tree and had an Orc land on me." I replied.
"Well you didn't exactly fall out of a tree, but you did have an Orc fall on you." Orophin said with a smile.
"Well that makes me feel better." I snorted. "I desperately need a bath then."
"Later," Haldir replied. "We must talk first."
I definitely didn't like the sound of that. When Haldir wishes to speak with someone alone, there's usually a reprimand attached to it. I racked my brain, trying to remember if I had done something to upset him lately. Nope. I've been keeping to my watches and..oh, Valor! Rumil. He knew that's why he wanted to talk to me.
"Haldir, I." I started to say but stopped when he took my hand and returned my betrothal ring to me.
"Perhaps we were to hasty in making our pledges to one another." He said softly. "It is best that we rethink this."
I grasped his hand before he could pull away. Pressing the ring into his hand, I closed his fingers around it. "Keep it. I have no use for it if you do not want it."
"I did not say that." He replied. "I just thought that you wished to."
"I wish to rest now Haldir." I said as I dropped back onto the bed and draped and arm over my eyes. "Please leave."
"Narwain."
"I said leave!"
Knowing that I couldn't stay here, I tossed aside the covers and slowly rose to my feet. The pain in my side had settled into a dull ache, by the time I had dressed and walked out of the flet. I knew of one place I would be welcomed without question, though getting there would prove an interesting task.
