Disclaimer: I do not own anything. Except Nessa, she is my own character. JRR Tolkien owns all the rest. Got it?

A/N: Two things. Number 1: I am using Microsoft Word to write this and the formatting might be a little messed up so bear with me. Number 2: Enjoy!!

Chapter 1

Her hair felt so...odd when it was short like this. When the wind blew it was like she didn't have hair at all. She kept walking. Although she missed her hair, if she hadn't cut it off, she might not be alive at all. She remembered that incident all too well...

~*FLASHBACK*~

She hadn't been out of Lothlorien for very long. She was walking along the edge of the forest, glad that her captain had assigned this mission to her. Then, out of nowhere, three large orcs appeared. One of them grabbed her from behind, meaning to pull her away by her hair, but she swirled around and in one quick fluid motion, chopped off her hair and drove her Elven blade through the orc. She quickly slew the other two and continued on.

~*END FLASHBACK*~

She heard, almost as though he were standing beside her, the voice of her captain and mentor, Haldir of Lorien. "In war, Nessa, one must oft make sacrifices for the good of others." She was glad that she would be meeting again with her beloved captain. She would be even gladder to get back to her homeland. She looked up, realizing that she was outside the pub where she was to meet with Haldir and his brothers Orophin and Rumil. She pulled her cloak a little tighter about herself; not for warmth but rather to make herself less noticeable. She entered the pub and sat down at a table in the corner to wait.

Just after she had begun to worry that they would not come, she felt a presence in the room. Then another...and another. They were similar, but not alike, and one was far stronger than the others. She smiled. Haldir and his brothers were here. She watched Haldir quietly inquiring as to her location; then she caught Rumil's eye. He gave her a nod and spoke in Haldir and Orophin's ears. The three made their way over to her, and she stood, hand on heart. She bowed.

"Mae govenan my captains. A star shines upon the hour of our meeting," she said in Elvish.

All three gave her a once-over, assuring themselves that she truly was all right. Haldir regarded her with a sharp eye, reading her soul through her face. She looked tired, and old, far too old for an Elf of only 427. But her eyes smiled. She was obviously glad to see them.

"I see that you have completed your mission, young Nessa," he remarked. He placed one hand on her shoulder and the other near her head, an amused, questioning look on his face. A faint smile played on her lips as she turned her head to greet the other Elves that were standing behind Haldir.

"It lightens my heart to see you alive and well, mellon nin," said Orophin.

"And have you gotten shorter or is just your hair?" quipped Rumil. He was the youngest of the three brothers, and was ever a prankster. Haldir's eyes smiled at this, his face ever serious.

"I see that we have much to catch up on from since we last met, mellon nins. But first we must talk business." Haldir's gaze settled finally on Nessa. She readied herself, knowing full well that he would want a lot of details.
