A/N: Hello! This is my first time posting a Fanfiction on this site, hopefully this one will turn out well. Since this is my first time posting here, this story is open to any constructive criticism, enjoy the story!
-Disclaimer: I do not own Avatar: The Last Airbender-
The day the fire nation took my mother was the first time I felt despair, and the day my father left me, gran-gran and my sister in order to fight the Fire Nation was the second time I felt despair.
However despite the heartache I went through after these days I tried my best to overcome my pain, and for a while I succeeded.
I had my sister and my grandmother who took care of me and always tried to comfort me when I was sad, I had obviously returned the gesture to them, after all… they were my family, and nothing would stop me from loving them and them from loving me, at least… that was what I had thought before, before the day the course of my life changed forever...
Sokka's P.O.V.
"Damn it! I am tired of being looked down on as a worthless failure! What does it matter that Katara can do some cool things with water? I fish for the village, train the children and take care of my family! Yet people look at Katara like some once in a lifetime prodigy… haven't any of these assholes seen a water bender before?! They don't need to act like she is God just because she can bend!" I spat out in anger as I grumpily carried a basket full of fish on my back, ignoring the looks of distaste some passersby gave me as they heard my words.
Of course deep down I knew it was wrong of me to talk about Katara like that, however I was still pissed off at what had happened earlier today.
Apparently Katara had gone up to the middle of the village to show off her water bending powers which had quickly caused a large crowd to gather around her so they could witness her water-bending techniques.
This had happened after I had went fishing by myself due to Katara ditching me under the excuse of checking on gran-gran, needless to say when I was done fishing and had found out about her ditching me to show off her power I was understandably angry and had chewed her out in front of the crowd, surprisingly after I was done lecturing her the crowd had gotten angry at me and started shouting at me for 'disrespecting' such a 'blessed' girl while being a 'failure' who wasn't worth the air he breathed due to being a sibling of a water-bender while not being one myself.
After hearing this from the crowd I angrily stomped my foot into the cold snow and yelled at the crowd in anger. I had told them that just because I wasn't a water-bender did not mean that I was useless.
I quickly looked at Katara so she could help me out in chewing out the crowd, only for her to look away from me… basically saying she wouldn't help me go against the crowd even though she knew I was in the right and she was in the wrong.
Anyways, after I had seen this I angrily marched away from the crowd which led me to where I am now. "Water-bending isn't even that strong of an ability anyways…" I muttered to myself, kicking away some snow as I stared into a large lake in front of me.
"Water-bending can only be used near a source of water, and even if there is a source of water nearby only experts can bend water that is several feet away from them or even under the ground. In fact water-benders and earth-benders are limited by their terrain, unlike fire benders who can somehow produce and control fire… I'd much rather have fire bending than water-bending or earth-bending." I muttered to myself as I took off my shirt and pants so I could take a dip in the lake, after a few minutes I breathed in deeply as I slowly submerged myself into the freezing lake.
My body felt the freezing cold for a few moments before my breathing caused my body to heat up, making the cold much more manageable.
This technique was something people in the south pole were very used to.
Over the years my ancestors have been here, our bodies have evolved to take in more breath and resist the cold.
This essentially made us the perfect divers and swimmers, however I wasn't really paying attention to these facts, all I was paying attention to was the fact that I was relaxing my emotions and my body in the lake. It felt amazing.
"*sigh* nothing beats a nice cold dip in the lake, if I do say so myself." I chuckled lightheartedly and I began swimming in the lake. After about thirty seconds of swimming I surprisingly saw a long and fat shadowy figure in the water. When I saw this I grinned evilly.
"Well, it looks like I will have some more food to fill my belly with today. Come over here you damn fish!" I yelled in excitement as I submerged my body into the lake and started swimming after the fish which was a few feet away from me, however I should have never even chased after the fish seeing as it wasn't a fish in the first place… it was a freaking Gator-shark!
Now, for those who don't know… a Gator-shark was a crossbreed between an alligator and a shark, the history behind their existence is a rather legendary one.
One day, many years ago... a powerful shark spirit named Domu escaped from the spirit world and possessed the body of a young, powerful shark.
Using its spirit powers, Domu physically empowered the body it inhabited and quickly hunted down nearly the entire population of sea creatures within the lake, until eventually Domu found one of his fellow spirits name Umi, who was a powerful alligator spirit that had been ruling over the ecosystem Domu was in before he had hunted down the creatures in the ecosystem, anyways Domu and Umi had a fierce battle over who should live in the lake, but after many days of fighting and no one being able to win, they stopped fighting and decided to work together to escape the lake and eventually rule over parts of the sea.
After a few years they had managed to conquered many parts of the sea and eventually fell in love with each other, and using their spirit powers they gave birth to thousands of Gator-sharks, which had a combination of both of their parents powers, making the Gator-sharks very dangerous because of the fact that they had spirit abilities and physically enhanced bodies.
Over the years, many brave hunters have killed these creatures.
Eventually due to so many of their kin being killed the remaining Gator-sharks became an endangered species, and although they were endangered... they were still powerful with a very large appetite for human meat and sea-food.
'SHIT!' I thought to myself as I rapidly swam away from the beast only for it to show its sharp teeth at me and swim after me, thankfully due to the head start I had I was able to get to land (more like snow) and run away from the beast.
I sighed in relief and sat down in the snow while carefully eyeing the lake, I could still see the shadow of the beast.
Anyways, I carefully kept watching the beast, not knowing if it would suddenly attack me from the water, and after a few minutes of keeping watch of the beast I relaxed my body and laid down on the soft snow.
"Shit, that was too close-" I was cut off because of my danger senses going haywire as the Gator-shark jumped out of the water with its alligator head wide open, ready to either shoot a beam of water at me or chomp my head off.
I quickly rolled away from the beast and immediately after I rolled away, a large jet of water hit the spot of snow I was at before I had rolled out the way.
I hastily stood up on my feet and watched as the Gator-shark stood up on its alligator feet, I narrowed my eyes as I saw it shake off some water on its body and make his fin on his back straighten itself. The beast then growled at me and its shark fin that straightened itself previously started glowing.
The glowing fin quickly shot blue beams of energy at me that quickly formed into icicle spikes.
I allowed my body to let my reflexes take over and I started dodging each and every one of the ice spikes that flew at me, and after a few minutes of this routine the fin of the Gator-shark suddenly stopped glowing and flopped down to its back, similar to a dog dropping its ears down to its face.
'So it looks like the Gator-shark can only attack for five minutes non stop, although I still have yet to determine his cool down time, I also need a weapon to fight this thing… I cannot allow it to be the only one between the two of us on the offensive.' I thought to myself as my eyes darted around the surrounding area to find anything that could be of use, I quickly located my basket of fish and some solid icicles on the ground that had came from the Gator-shark, my analytic mind quickly formed a plan based off of the material I had around me.
"Hey web feet! Why don't you try to attack me like a real hunter, not like someone who is scared to get up close and only relies on cheap tricks to win battles!" I shouted at the beast, and it roared loudly in response and ran towards me, seeing that my insult worked on it I quickly initiated the next step of my plan.
I did a front flip over the running beast and watched as it was unable to stop itself and helplessly crashed into a nearby iceberg. I laughed as it got dazed and took the remaining time I had to get my basket of fish along with some sharp icicles.
"Hey fatty! Why don't you eat some raw food like the monster you are?!" I shouted once again, and using an icicle I picked up from the snow I quickly cut open the dead fish and let the scent of its blood fill the air, I then threw the bleeding fish a few feet away from me and saw the Gator-shark snap out of its daze to turn around and rush towards its new snack.
The Gator-shark eventually reached the bleeding fish and quickly started eating it off of the snow, seeing as it was enjoying its meal I initiated the last part of my plan.
I silently walked up to the beast while it was eating and tried to shove the icicle into its head (keyword: tried).
The moment the icicle touched its head it shattered into several small pieces and I looked at the shards and the Gator-sharks head in shock.
I quickly jumped away from the Gator-shark in fear of it attacking me and I made the right call, because not even a second after the icicles had shattered the beast raised its head with its jaws wide open and it quickly snapped down on the place I was previously with its jaws, it then roared at me again and started running at me with its mouth open.
Time seemed to slow down for me as I looked to the right and noticed and iceberg blocking my path, I then looked to the left and noticed the lake... however I wasn't willing to see if I could escape the Gator-sharks turf again, I then looked behind the Gator-shark to check if I could pull another stunt like front flipping over it, only to see icicles emerging from the snow behind it.
Shit, I had no idea it could control the terrain to such an extent that it could create icicle spikes behind it as it was moving.
'Fuck! I am going to die! I am going to die! I am going to die! I am going to die! I am going to die! I WANT TO LIVE!' I mentally shouted as I closed my eyes and felt a burning sensation in my chest and in my hands. I quickly pushed both of my fists forward, hoping to at least punch the beast before it could eat me, however something unexpected had happened after I pushed my fists forward...
I felt the heat of fire ahead of me and I could hear the shark screaming in pain while the smell of burnt flesh filled my nose.
I quickly opened my eyes to see what had happened and my jaw dropped in shock, my fists were lit on fire, yet unharmed, and the Gator-shark had golden flames burning it from the inside out, as the flames began burning it from its throat and quickly started spreading around its body.
Seeing this scene I only could reach one conclusion.
"Holy fuck! I am a Fire-bender! But what's up with these golden flames, aren't the flames from Fire-benders typically red or orange?" I quickly shook my head, deciding to ask myself these questions later, after all… Katara wasn't the only bender in the village now!
"Sokka! Y-your a f-f-fire bender!" My body froze in shock as I heard the voice of Katara speak to me, I spun around to locate her and I was met with a sight I would never forget, she was looking at me in fear with her eyes wide, one of her hands was covering her mouth while the other was shakily pointing a finger at me.
"Y-you like them! L-like the ones who took mother!" My sister spat out the word like it was poison, she glared hatefully at me and started running away from me. I quickly tried to chase after her, however I slipped on the snow and fell on my back.
"Katara! It's not what you think! Let me explain!" I shouted at her as I watched her running figure get smaller.
In response to this I tried desperately to get up, only for me to slip and fall in my haste… and for the first time in a long time I felt despair.
A/N: I can't lie, I can definitely see the potential this story has. In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Sokka has usually been a glorified side character, often put to the side in favor of Aang, Katara, Toph, Azula, Etc. Which disappoints me greatly because Sokka is my favorite character. Anyways, for those who weren't aware yet, the main character of this story is Sokka... who has the ability to Fire-bend special flames...
In this story Sokka will mostly be going on his own adventures and will get stronger and wiser through each trial he is put through, and for those who don't like that idea very much... you do not have to worry, Sokka will have encounters with several characters from canon, including the main characters, although… that will only take up a small percentage of the story compared to his adventures.
Next topic: romance!
I have no clue how I will write about Sokka's love life, however I am contemplating on giving Sokka a harem... Anyways, peace!
