Part One
In which Hadrian finds his destiny...
Chapter One
A bolt of white hot lightning broke the utter blackness, cleaving the night sky into parts, but just for the briefest of moments. Moments later there came the crash of thunder and right on cue the rain began to fall haphazardly from the sky, as if it wasn't entirely committed to the idea of raining. Then all at once it fell in great sheets; there was nowhere to hide from the downpour. Another flash lit up the sky followed hotly by it's cracking boom. It came so suddenly, the storm, it was as though a tragedy occurred and the Earth was weeping.
Weeping for the child that was being carried up stone steps by a horse-faced woman to the front doors of Sunderland Orphan Asylum. She glanced down at the child that was left, one her doorstep the earlier morning. There was only a name on a card when she found this child while getting the milk. "For what its worth, take care of yourself. I am sorry for whoever left you, I wish the best for you" with a worried look she laid the bundle on the top of the steps in a basket the child was found in, the baby opened its eyes for the first time in a few hours, bright emerald eyes stared as the lady left without looking back.
A flash of lightning scared the child but its screams grew as the thunder rolled, "what in heaven's name?" a voice was heard as a elderly lady opened the grand doors to the Orphanage. Her brown eyes looked to where the crying came from to find the child bundled in a fleece blanket, she quickly looked down the street seeing no car or person. "You poor thing," she cooed at the child lifting him up into her arms, "come let's get you nice and warm."
The lady walked through the entrance hall to her office setting the basket with the babe on her desk. "Lena come here please," the lady spoke on the intercom.
"Be right there, Miss Sharp," a voice responded.
She looked at the child seeing it back to sleep from exhaustion, she then focused on the basket and blanket it was swaddled in, light blue, very soft and expensively made. The child shifted in its sleep, it looked no older than one, a lightning bolt shaped scar on its forehead with tips of raven hair on its head. A small glint of something caught her eyes. Parchment. She carefully pulled the parchment out from under the chil when the knock was heard.
"Enter," she called seeing Lena the young worker who just started a few months back at the door. "This child was found at the front door, could you check to make sure everything is okay?"
The young worker nodded, smiling at the young sleeping child, "I would love to." Lena said with a smile picking the child up into her arms. "I will return," she said heading out the door.
"Thank you Lena." Once alone, the lady lifted up the parchment, tuning it around she realized it was a letter. She placed her wire rimmed glasses on as she opened the small letter. Just looking over the small letter the sentences were short but broken up, places looked to be blacked out or erased. Though she read it,
Dear Mrs. the next of Kin,
We are saddened to inform you Mr. & Mrs. have been found dead along with his twin in a fire at the end of October. Hadrian is the only survivor, as you, are the next of Kin the guardianship of Hadrian falls to you. I am sorry for your loss.
His birthday is July 31, 1980; he seems to be a bright young boy. Please take him in as your own with your son Mrs. . I wish you well Mrs. and good luck.
Yours truly,
It was not signed, the lady sat with questions forming in her head. She assumed that all the names have been somehow scrubbed out leaving only the child's first name and birth. The question was just what happened?
Before she could come up to any conclusions, Lena returned with the child. "All is good, this little tyke is just tired. Did you find anything?"
She nodded to the young worker, "yes his name is Hadrian and was born on July 31, 1980. His parents and twin were killed in a fire; the letter didn't give much else."
"Poor tyke, I'll set him in the nursery with the others for the night."
"Yes," the lady nodded, "I think that would be perfect."
"Goodnight then, Miss Sharp." Lena announced leaving the office, she heard Miss Sharp's reply, as she carried Hadrian to the Nursery.
The storm still brewed outside though now distant, she placed the babe into a crib. She smiled placing a teddy next to the sleeping child before checking the other young ones and turning in for the night.
A day at a time passed since young Hadrian was left at the doors, and soon it became years that have gone by. The passing years Hadrian, a young boy with a dashing smile and raven feathered hair, grew up with tricks and charms no one could explain. He was smart, daring, charming and with his glittering emerald eyes was capable of bending any adult at the orphanage to his whim. Overly smart some would say.
Currently said young boy was running. He was running through the halls of the old manor trying to hide from the group of older boys that thought them in charge of things when adults turned their backs. He just performed a prank on them, when the opportunity arises you can't skip bringing them down a few pegs. Even though Hadrian was mostly their go to kid to beat up. The lucky part no one would ever believe the dashing smile, brilliant green eyed boy could have done something.
However this sometimes scared a few of the kids for they all know weird unexplainable things happen when you get his undesired attention. Still though he was the one to be picked on and bullied, and it didn't help when the children caught him conversing with a snake.
"I know it was you who did that, Freak!" Mikael O'neill the leader of the gang exclaimed the next day while they were all out playing in the field.
Hadrian looked up from his book he was reading under the tree. Being only seven the older kids still intimidated Harian who was a bit short for his age. "And what did you think I did?"
"You know perfectly well what you did to us, now you're going to pay for it." After the declaration was made the four person group advanced on Hadrian. Being outnumbered four to one, Hadrian didn't have much of an option as he couldn't fully control his strange gifts.
A few punches were hit by the time a hiss could be heard, in the grass slithering up to the boys. The older kids looked around to find it when one of the boys fell to the floor screaming in pain as the snake bit him in the leg. Another one was bit when Mikeal held the snake. Mikael smirked looking down at Hadrian.
His eyes wide in fear, the Tiger Snake was his only companion sometimes. He was his friend.
"Say Freak if we kill it, I think you'll learn not to mess with us with the Freakishness of yours." Mikeal to the horror of Hadrian watched in morbid slowness, as he was held down by one other the older boys, tears streamed down. A scream was trying to break out as Mikael slammed a rock down on his head.
A shock wave of energy ricocheted out of Hadrian, a scream finally penetrated. His friend is dead. And they killed him. His heart shattered like a glass cup falling to the floor and scattering. Hadrian soon felt power under his gaze as he beheld the one who killed him. In gruesome fashion the life from the snake killer slowly left him leaving a lifeless body in Hadrian's wake.
But the feeling didn't dissipate as he turned his burning gaze to the other two who were bit. They to was a lifeless body in seconds-
"Hadrian!" His gaze looked up to Miss Lena, a worker who was a close confidante to Hadrian. "Stop please.." She pleaded as shocking tears fell down her face, she knew each boy was dead. "Go you must leave⦠please for the sake of your life...go."
Hadrian seeing the protectiveness she always gave him growing up, he just killed them all. And the call for blood didn't bother him any. He scooped up his dead friend into his arms, giving one last look to Lena. Sharing a nod Hadrian turns towards the forest never looking back leaving carnage of dead plants and trees in his wake around the dead boys.
According to the police files, the Sunderland Orphanage was burnt to the ground due to a kitchen fire that same night. Five lives, a worker and five young boys, were reported dead; the bodies were never found.
