Matthew opens up the door to find Joe and a familiar face behind him. The familiar face was one of the two Aurors who Joe showed up with the first time they met. "Mr. Clearview, we are here on unfortunate business. Do you mind if we come in?" Joe was the first to speak with an unusually serious look.
Matthew puts the clipping in his pocket and gestures for the two men to enter. The second Auror was a decently tall fellow, standing at roughly six foot two inches. His hair was shaved and he had no beard. The two walk in and Joe stops directly inside and starts to speak with Matthew.
"We are here because..." He stops for a moment then looks at Matthew. "Your father has passed away while in prison."
Matthew, without missing a beat shrugs and walks back behind the counter. "If that's all you had to tell me then there's no reason to be so nervous Joe." He rests his arms on the desk. "I lost all love for my old man when I went to visit him once and he spouted that he had nothing to do with the deaths."
Joe's face turns to one of surprise. "Oh, well unfortunately then, that's not the only reason we're here." He points at his partner. "That is why Nick's here. I strongly objected to this next part and stated that I had business ties with you. So they sent someone to do it in my stead." He breathes in and hands a warrant to Matthew. "This is a warrant to search your premises. Some of your fathers things were taken from lock up shortly after his death and they suspect you."
Matthew reads over the warrant as Nick begins his search. "I told them I didn't believe you were responsible, but that just gave them another reason to send him, but I wanted to tell you the news myself."
"Thank you. I wasn't close to my father after what happened, so it's not that devastating for me. Haven't even seen him in ten years." After reading the warrant Matthew watches Nick rummage through every nook and cranny of his shop. The moment Nick went towards a closet in the back, Matthew tensed up. Joe noticed this, but when the closet was opened there was nothing significant inside. Just extra tools and equipment for if they needed replacement.
After about an hour of searching Nick shook his head. "Nothing here or at the house."
Matthew instantly spoke up hearing Nick mention his home. "You already searched my house?" He looked angrily at Joe.
Joe put his hand up to diffuse the situation. "We walked past here earlier and saw the shop closed. We had assumed you were at your house, so we stopped by there first. Your mother let us in and allowed the search." Matthew visibly calmed down. "After the search, she said you were still at work as far as she knew. So we came back here."
"Alright, if you are finished then I must ask for you to leave. I was just about to head out." Matthew walked over to the door and opened it for the two Aurors.
"Absolutely. Honestly Matthew, I'm sorry for your loss and sorry for taking up your time." Joe walked outside and soon followed Nick.
After the two left and disapparated, Matthew shut the door. Once shut Matthew hit his palm against the wall. "Why did you have to go and die, old man?" Tears finally fall from his eyes as he pulls the newspaper clipping back out. The clipping was as read.
"A dark day in wand making
Local wizard, Jace Clearview, arrested for the murder of three fellow wizards. The spell used is unknown, but we know the three men had suffered strokes just before their deaths."
Matthew looks at it and talks out loud. "Is what happened at the school a coincidence or proof that you might be innocent?" He stops and tries to stop himself from crying again. He puts the paper away and leaves the shop. He decides to exchange some currency into No-Maj currency and head into the streets of the non wizards.
The streets are still different from the magical communities. No-Maj technology was still frowned upon by most magic users. They thought it was beneath them. Matthew, however, found some No-Maj technology interesting and convenient. Like the thing he was going to see now. As he walked, he was getting all sorts of stares and compliments about his height.
He stepped into a hardware store and went straight to the section he was most familiar with. As he gets there he smiles at the machine in front of him. A worker walks over and greets him. "I see your back to see the lathe. Is there anything I can do for you while you're here?"
Matthew nods and looks at the female worker. "Yeah, I've finally decided I'm going to buy it. I'll also need some tools. Got a lot of work ahead of me." The worker is almost dumbstruck by his admission. After about two years of him visiting and looking at the different lathes, this was the first time he has ever purchased anything.
After buying all the stuff, the worker offered to help get it into his vehicle. Matthew shook his head and picked the box up. This box was fairly big, but Matthew picked it up and walked out with it on his shoulder. This would turn out to be a bad idea however. After about half a mile of walking with it, Matthew begins to sweat and become out of breath. He decided to head down an alley and disapparate. He apparates into his shop and immediately puts everything down.
"I need to start hitting the gym again." He breathes heavily for a few seconds then starts unpacking everything. He moves everything to the side as he begins work constructing his new wood lathe. He throws the motor back into the box and assembles everything else. When he finishes he sits and grabs a notebook. He begins writing in it, making formulas and descriptions.
After about an hour of writing and crossing things out he finally pulled out his wand and concentrated on the lathe. A shimmer surrounded it and he pressed the on button. Instead of the bit turning, the entire machine started to vibrate and jump around. He dispelled his enchantment and went back to writing. Another thirty minutes and another failed enchantment.
This continues for five hours. At that point he stops writing again, the notebook already half filled with his scribblings. He closes his eyes and presses the On button. The machine kicks to life and the bit begins to spin correctly. Happy with his work, he tries out all the features of the machine and yells out in excitement. "It worked! It finally worked!"
He runs over and grabs a block of wand wood. He marks the centers and puts it in the lathe. As he turns it on, the wood begins to spin. His hand reaches over grabbing one of the cutting bits. He slowly begins to shave wood away while the machine continues to spin. After only three minutes, he had it down to the size of a wand. When he went to make the next cut however, the piece broke in half showing his first mistake.
This did not discourage him. He grabbed another block of wood and tried again. He continued to practice until his hand was numb, at which point he turned the machine off and looked at his work. Not a single one was wand ready, but with more practice and more work he could create wands in a fraction of the time.
Fully ecstatic, he decided that some sleep would do him good. He apparated inside his bedroom at home and collapsed in bed, falling asleep almost immediately. When he woke in the morning he noticed that he had a blanket on top of him. He could also smell food cooking.
He walks out into the kitchen to see his mother setting out plates. "I would say good morning sleepyhead, but it's well into the afternoon."
Matthew smirked and blushed. "Sorry mama, I had a breakthrough with my wand making process last night and spent almost all night working on it."
Her eyebrows raised as Matthew said this. She first made the plates and sat down. "After how long you and every other wandmaker have existed you've been able to perfect the craft, but to come with a new innovation? What could that possibly be?"
Matthew starts to eat and then looks up at his mother. "You're not going to like this, but went to the No-Maj stores and bought a lathe."
