With Kaitou KID gone, Snake starts going after the jewels more actively and people get killed. It doesn't take Shinichi long to see a connection to KID – and that this is the last branch left of the BO he had taken down.

Shinichi forms a special task-force to end the BO for good. And for that, he needs Kaitou KID's help.

The White Collar Phantom Thief

The Secret of Pandora

Case 10: Return of the Thief

Singapore. Urgh, Singapore. How had he possibly justified Singapore to himself? Not only had he cleared the thief's name about a murder he hadn't committed, he had actively aided the thief. He'd been an active participant in KID's little theft of evidence – and it had been a thrill. He'd chosen to stay with KID during the weekend. And yes, chosen, of course. He had been abducted by a thief, if he'd told Kogoro and Ran that, there wouldn't have been problems. Why would he have a passport with him if he got illegally smuggled into the country. But he had chosen to stay with KID.

So ever since Shinichi had realized that he might be in love with Kaitou KID, he'd been rerunning every single interaction he'd had with the blasted Phantom Thief. And damn it, it was so obvious. There were so many things he couldn't even begin to explain any other way. How had he not looked at it from an outsider's perspective? As a real detective. He was a detective, for crying out loud, and the evidence had been all over the place but he had opted not to see it.

The problem was, he... could even understand why. In the beginning, he had ignored it for his own sake. Not just because they stood on different sides of the law, at that point KID had already proven to be a good guy despite being a criminal. But Shinichi had been Conan. How could there be romance between him and anyone? These feelings were a useless distraction from the task at hand and they would only bring him heartache. So he had ignored them.

"Stop staring at me so smugly, it's rude..."

He groaned and leaned back on his couch. Haibara on the armchair simply cackled. She'd been smug about it ever since Shinichi had shared his findings with her. Perhaps he shouldn't have done it. But then Haibara had that look, the one that made it really hard to lie to her.

"How have you only realized it now, Kudou?" Haibara shook her head a little. "That's..."

Shinichi grumbled to himself. She had come by with curry and he had... told her. Because he was still worrying about KID and didn't know if the damned thief was even still alive. The worry was driving him up the wall. Talking about something else had been meant to distract him.

"You broke him out of prison," Haibara spoke deliberately slow. "And decided to pretend that he is your fiance, please excuse if I find mild delight in this."

The fiance thing. Shinichi groaned and sank deeper on his couch. His fiance, Kaitou KID. His cheeks darkened at that thought. How was he supposed to look his 'fiance' in the face again?

"You lied to me."

Masumi winced at Ran's tone. It was the disappointment oozing from her words that got Masumi. And the look on her face! Even worse. If there was one thing Masumi hated, it was disappointing Ran. She loved her girlfriend far too much for that.

Masumi tilted her head down like a guilty child. "I'm sorry."

"I..." Ran heaved a sigh. "I do understand why you lied to me, you were lying because you were protecting Shinichi's secret. It wasn't your place to share it. But understanding that doesn't mean I'm not hurt, Masumi. I just... I wish there hadn't been any lies."

"What... did he tell you?" asked Masumi tentatively.

"Everything," Ran paused for a moment. "I mean, I really do hope that it was everything. The Black Organization. Being deaged. Being... Being Conan. Breaking Kaitou KID out of prison and hiding him in his house as his fiance so them – and you and a special task force – could catch the murdering thieves hunting a jewel that supposedly grants immortality. That was a lot, I really hope there aren't any more surprises there."

"And... what did he tell you about me?"

"Only that you knew everything. And that I could come and talk to you about it," Ran looked at her girlfriend with a deep frown. "Which makes me think there are more things. Things that you are hiding from me. Something, I assume, you couldn't tell me without exposing Shinichi."

The conversation Masumi had been dreading ever since getting together with Ran. But a conversation she very much knew had to happen, because she did hate lying to Ran. She had to, though. Because telling Ran about Mary, Shuuichi, the Black Organization... All of that was hard to explain without exposing Shinichi's secret too...

"There's a lot you don't know about my family," Masumi whispered, bracing herself.

"Here he is! I found him!"

Kaito blinked sluggishly. He'd lost consciousness in between. A couple times. Who had found him? Turning, he tried to figure out who was there. Relief filled him when he saw a familiar face. Takagi. Heh. He'd always known that was his favorite police detective. The man's fiance came running up after and the two cops hoisted Kaito up between them.

"How'd you..."

"Jii-san," supplied Sato. "He gave us a list of safe locations the two of you agreed on to meet at if there was a problem during a heist and you got separated. We narrowed it down to locations close to the heist location and split up looking for you."

A car stopped in front of them and Takagi opened the car door, helping Kaito and Sato into the backseat before Takagi himself got into the front seat next to the driver.

"Tantei-kun must be... really mad at me..."

"Oh, I think Kudou-kun will mostly be relived you're alive," Sato chuckled. "But you should maybe stay alive until then because he is definitely going to be mad if you don't."

"No dying," Kaito's eyelids felt so heavy. "Promised Aoko... No dying..."

Haibara heaved a deep sigh. While she did enjoy sticking needles into the infuriating thief, this was not the kind of doctor she had been. Thanks to Kudou, she'd broadened her horizon a lot. Maybe she was going into a medical career after graduation, this time around to help people in need?

Once she was done stitching KID up, she bandaged the wound and then thoroughly washed her hands. Time to face the music. Straightening her posture, she walked out of the bedroom. Shinichi stood nearly with his nose pressed against the door. It was startling how exhausted he looked, deep bags under his eyes and a bit of insanity in his eyes. KID had been missing for nearly twenty-four hours and Shinichi hadn't slept at all, had instead confessed the entire truth to Ran and then had a total melt-down about realizing he was in love with KID. Bit of a rough day.

"How is he? Is he..."

"He's going to be fine," Haibara said in a smooth, soothing voice. "It was a through and through. He lost a lot of blood, but I gave him enough infusions to make up for it. He'll need rest, but he'll be fine. If you want to, you can go inside and sit with him."

She hadn't even finished her sentence, Shinichi was already pushing past her into the bedroom. For a moment, he paused. Staring at the KID suit next to the bed, completely soaked in blood. KID's blood. Seeing him get shot was one thing, but seeing just how much blood he'd lost...?

"He's going to be fine," Haibara assured her softly. "If he can rest that long. Which I doubt. This man is notoriously unable to sit still."

"I'll make sure," Shinichi's voice was hard, sure. "He is going to rest."

Mh. Amusing. She couldn't wait to see how that one unfolded once KID would wake up again.

Aoko tried to stay away. That just wasn't possible though. Regardless of how angry she was at Kaito, he would always be her Kaito. Knocking softly, she entered the bedroom where Kaito was resting. And Shinichi was sitting right at his bedside. The detective was reading a Sherlock Holmes book, sitting on the empty side of the bed.

"Shinichi-kun?" Aoko approached, making sure she was speaking softly. "How... is he?"

She knew how he was. Shinichi had texted her the moment the doctor was done and had left the house – he had some on-call doctor who wanted to stay anonymous so everyone else had cleared the house after bringing Kaito back. So Aoko had all the information she needed, she could have as well stayed at home, with Saguru. He'd been cooking dinner, they could be eating together right now. After all, being here didn't change anything. Her presence wasn't going to magically heal his injuries faster or anything. It was ridiculous of her to be here, wasn't it?

"Asleep," Shinichi paused. "Still. Hasn't woken up yet."

Of course he hadn't. Shinichi would have texted her if Kaito had woken up. Really, completely unnecessary of Aoko to be here. Nothing changed, nothing was new. And yet here she was, standing at the foot of the bed, watching Kaito be unconscious. This was so silly.

"Why am I here?" Aoko wondered softly, more to herself than to Shinichi.

"Same reason as I am," offered Shinichi after a moment, putting down his book. "I could read in any other room of the mansion. Or... go outside, to the agency and get some work done. Instead... I'm here. Because this idiot nearly died and as long as I can see him here, breathing, I know for a fact that he's still alive. You... needed to see him yourself."

"Right," Aoko heaved a sigh and sat down on the bed. "I guess so..."

Shinichi still hadn't picked his book back up. Instead, his focus was still on Kaito. There was something different about him though. The look in his eyes, something about it was hauntingly familiar yet new. Aoko sat there and watched Shinichi for a while.

"This man is infuriating," whispered Shinichi annoyed. "Look at him, getting shot, nearly dying like that. Why does he cause us so much trouble?"

"He lives to torture those around him," replied Aoko in a flat voice.

The two of them looked at each other before laughing. It was nice to have found a kindred spirit. Someone who actually understood just how much trouble Kaito was.

When Kaito woke up, he was pretty sure he was still asleep. Because there was Shinichi, asleep right next to him in the bed. Must be a dream. Kaito had had that one a lot of times in the past. He wanted to roll over to watch Shinichi better, but pain shot through his shoulder. With a pained whimper did he go back down. Right, so not a dream then, huh. That pain was real.

"Ri—ight, got shot," Kaito sighed and looked down at his shoulder.

Bandages. Good sign. Someone had stitched him back together. Even better sign was that he was in bed with Shinichi. Because it meant that he had been found by the right people. There was something. A car... Slowly, memories came back to him.

"Got shot," Shinichi grunted annoyed. "Don't make it sound so casual."

Stunning blue eyes blinked open and immediately glared at him. A dopey smile spread over Kaito's lips as he stared into those pretty blue eyes. He could stare at them all day.

"Tantei-ku—un," Kaito reached out to pat the detective's face. "It's okay. I got shot before. A bunch of times. I always get better. Were you wo—rried about me?"

A couple times, Shinichi just blinked, before he shook his head. "Pain meds."

"Huh?" Kaito tilted his head and tried to scoot closer. "Whassat?"

"You. You're on heavy pain medication."

Shinichi sat up and reached for the blanket to pull it up over Kaito. Mh. How nice. Kaito smiled, snuggling into the blanket. Reaching out, he tried to pull his detective closer.

"I'm sleepy, Shin-chan," Kaito's eyes closed slowly. "So—o sleepy..."

"Right," Shinichi sighed, but he reached out to smooth down Kaito's wild hair. "Then sleep."

Within seconds was the thief out again and Shinichi was left awake and alone. Aoko had left a couple hours ago already. The two of them had been sitting together for about an hour before she decided to go back home. Even after she had left, Shinichi couldn't get up. He had tried. But he couldn't leave Kaito's side and it was so frustrating.

"Stupid thief," Shinichi glared and poked Kaito's cheek. "Don't make me worry like that."

/break\

The next time Kaito woke up was decidedly less pleasant. The pain meds had mostly worn off so there was a dull ache all over his body. He also felt a bit nauseous. And there was no more Shinichi, which was a shame. Or maybe he had only dreamed that part? Probably.

"Are you awake now, sneak thief?"

The door opened and in walked a scowling Shinichi carrying a tray with something. The scowl deepened as he approached Kaito. The tray was put down on Kaito's lap. Soup and tea.

"Aw..." Kaito grinned softly. "Did you make me food?"

"No," Shinichi seemed to pout. "...Aoko made it."

"Oh? Aoko made... me food?" Kaito sat up very slowly, hope in his voice.

"I told you," Shinichi sighed. "She cares deeply for you. That didn't stop. All she needs is time."

Huh. That was true. Shinichi had said that. That Aoko would come around with time. And Kaito had hoped he was right, but... Guess Shinichi had been right. Kaito grabbed the spoon and started poking the soup. It had been so long since he'd last tasted her cooking and he'd missed it dearly.

"Don't ever do that again, stupid thief," Shinichi's voice wavered a little.

"...I really did worry you, mh?"

"Of course. Idiot," Shinichi huffed annoyed, but he still sat down next to Kaito. "I saw you get shot and then you were just gone. And your tracker got damaged. I thought..."

He trailed off, but the look on his face said it all. He looked angry and frustrated but also like he was in pain. Ouch. Kaito swallowed hard at that. He really had worried Shinichi, huh.

"It's part of the job," Kaito whispered. "I'm sorry. But we both knew the risk. I knew the risk I was signing up for by becoming Kaitou KID. And you..."

"I knew what I was getting into when I broke you out of prison, yes."

Shinichi looked so annoyed. Annoyed at himself? And at Kaito? Kaito wished there was anything he could do. Saying sorry wasn't going to fix things. And he also couldn't exactly promise not to do it again. Because getting shot was part of the deal. It happened before, it was going to happen again. Still, Kaito wished he hadn't hurt Shinichi. He was really tired of hurting those he cared about.

"Oh, also, Aoko-chan called your mother to let her know what happened."

With a drawn-out groan did Kaito collapse back onto the bed, careful not to shake the tray. Great.

Ran needed a vacation. After everything Shinichi had told her and then everything that Masumi had told her? She loved them both. Still loved them both. But could everyone around her just stop trying to protect her? She was literally a certified karate champion, she knew how to protect herself! She was not a damsel in distress. And she was also not stupid.

"Thank you, Sonoko. This is exactly what I need."

Sonoko laughed and wrapped an arm around Ran's shoulder. "No, no, no. This was an excellent idea and I think it's what we all need!"

Kazuha was on Ran's other side and Aoko on Sonoko's other side. The four were heading toward a ship, where uncle Jirokichi was already standing. As soon as he spotted them, Jirokichi's dog started running up to them with a wildly wagging tail. Ran laughed as she caught the dog, ruffling his fur.

"Good boy, Lupin," she smiled at the dog, patting his head.

"Girls!" Jirokichi waved at them. "I'm sure you kids are going to have a lot of fun."

Jirokichi owned a sail boat, with a full crew. After Ran had told Sonoko that she needed to get away for a weekend, Sonoko had called him. It was perfect weather to be out in the sun.

"Too bad that Sera-san couldn't make it though," commented Kazuha.

And Ran felt slightly guilty about excluding Masumi. But Masumi was one of the people Ran needed a few days' distance from for now. Masumi had said she was okay with it, had enough cases to deal with at the agency anyway. And it would be nice to do something with just her friends again for a change. They used to have girls outings all the time, Sonoko, Ran and Kazuha, leaving Conan and Heiji to spend time alone. And then Sera had become part of their group, as one of the girls. But there was something different about their dynamic, with Sera being Ran's girlfriend. Neither Sonoko, Aoko nor Kazuha took their partners to girls time. And there was just... there was something about having a trip with just her friends and without romantic partners.

"She's dealing with a tough case," Ran smiled at her friends. "And I'm sure our detective squad is going to have a lot of fun with their cases."

It wasn't a lie. KID had been shot, that was a tough case to deal with. Shaking that thought off, Ran grabbed her luggage again to board the ship. This weekend was about Ran. For once, she was going to take time for herself, instead of taking care of others. She always did that, putting herself second in favor of helping out others and supporting them. No, her feelings were hurt and she didn't want to put on smiles so Shinichi and Masumi didn't have to feel guilty. She wanted to smile for real.

"Three days out here!" Sonoko spread her arms and turned around once. "This will be glorious!"

"I'm very much looking forward to it," said Aoko with a smile of her own.

Kaito was good enough to get up already, he was going to be fine. And after the scare, she was looking forward to getting some fresh air and also to hanging out with people who weren't cops or detectives. With the investigation into the Black Organization, Aoko seemed to spend every moment that she wasn't working her day job on that too. Time for some fun.

/break\

"Kai-cha—an!" Chikage's voice was a loud wail before she tackled Kaito.

"Ouch, ouch, ouch," Kaito winced. "Mom, I got shot! In the shoulder! Stop squeezing"

"Oh, I'm sorry, sweetie," Chikage furrowed her brows concerned. "But then, you should be sorry. Getting shot like that! I thought we taught you better. You dodge bullets!"

She sat down next to him on the bed, patting his head down and checking for injuries. Shinichi remained lingering in the doorway, arms crossed over his chest as he watched mother and son.

"Gee, mom, if only I had remembered that," Kaito deadpanned. "I tried, mom. I did."

A pleased smirk spread over Shinichi's lips as he slowly stepped out of the room, leaving Kaito to his fate of being scolded by his mom. Served the thief right for the worry he'd caused.

Author's note: It was fun torturing Shinichi by making him remember all the times his feelings were obvious :D Next up, we're gonna torture him some more by making him and Kaito sell their cover-story as fiances... by going on a date
