Vol 1: Power And Responsibility, Chapter 1: Konoha High School's Number 1 Nerd, Enter Naruto Uzumaki

"Hey Uzumaki!" Someone yelled from down the hall.

The said glasses wearing blonde gulped as he stopped dead in his tracks to the familiar voice. He slowly turned around "Yes Hibachi?" He asked in a timid voice.

Hibachi had a devilish smirk on his face as he walked up with his friends and wrapped his arm around Naruto "There you are buddy." He said sarcastically "Where you've been? I missed you! I've been lookin' for ya since the start of the new year. So how have you been?" He asked as he walked up to Naruto with two more in tow.

"..." Naruto opened his mouth response but only to bite his lip. "How have I been?" He thought "I think we both know the answer, because you're one of the people that caused this!" He shouted in his mind as he closed his eyes and gripped his fist in frustration.

Hibachi and his two friends saw his reaction and chuckled "Listen I just wanted to say, I've got his pain in the ass math class this year and I was hoping you could do what you did last year." Now Naruto looked at him with a shocked face "But not just for me." He pointed to the others "But for my pals too. They could all use your 'help'."

Naruto stared at them with discontent, by help he knew what they meant. Last year Naruto had been bullied into doing people's homework, from students in his classes and their friends to sometimes others not even in the same classes. It was nothing but stress and anxiety from him for months and caused him to fall behind in his own grades which didn't go unnoticed. Luckily for him eventually the whole thing was discovered by the teachers and punishments went all around for those involved, Naruto included but not by the school.

"You'll do it right?" Hibachi asked in a low voice.

Naruto was snapped out of his memories and back to the situation he was facing.

Naruto looked to the ground and whispered his answer "No."

Hibachi blinked "What?" He asked with no response.

With this he then grabbed Naruto by his collar and pushed him against a wall "What did you just say!?" He asked in a louder voice.

Naruto's eyes were closed as he was yanked harder. He opened his right eye and struggled out "NO! I'm not going through that again!" He shouted back while sending the best glare he could muster at his assaulter.

Hibachi's anger raised quickly as did the others "Why you!" He started as he cocked back his fist "I guess you must had forgotten your place!" He shouted as he went for a punch.

Naruto could only close his eyes and grit his teeth as he waited for the impact. But after a minute it the pain never came, he slowly reopened his eyes to see Hibachi had his fist being held back by another.

"Why you!?" Hibachi said as he glared at the one holding him.

"Sasuke." Naruto said as he looked to his savior and best friend.

Sasuke Uchiha, Konoha High School's most popular and feared student. Slightly taller than Naruto, Sasuke had jet black hair and eyes to match as he glared to Hibachi. Sending as much hate and disgust as he could with his stare. As it said, 'If looks could kill' then Hibachi would be dead a thousand times over.

Hibachi's friends and other on lookers could only stare with slight fear in their eyes as they looked upon the Uchiha.

"Back off now." Sasuke said in low but menacing voice as he increased his grip on Hibachi.

Hibachi sucked his teeth in annoyance. This wasn't his first run in with the Uchiha and the other times all ending quite painfully. Coming from a family with a long history of police service Sasuke was taught in self-defense which at school he would use for himself and others too weak to fight for themselves. Especially when it came to Naruto, something the whole school learned in the his first year.

Hibachi then released Naruto, seeing this Sasuke loosen his grip. Feeling this Hibachi then swatted his hand away "Fine, I'll back off for now." He said as he began to walk away but then turned to Naruto for one last time "But remember Uzumaki, the Uchiha won't always be there to save your ass." He then signaled his friends to follow his as the quickly took their leave. Despite there being more of them, they knew their chances were still against them if it came to a fight.

Sasuke sighed as he watched the group walk away "Pieces of trash." He commented as he looked to his blonde friend "Are you okay Naruto?"

Naruto couldn't look Sasuke in the eyes, only stare to the ground in disappointed in himself "Yeah I'm fine, thanks..." Was all he could muster out in a defeated voice.

Sasuke picked up on this, knowing Naruto absolutely hated being save "Look I know you probably don't want to hear this but that asshole is right about one thing. I can't and won't be there when stuff like this happens, so maybe you should consider learning how to defend yourself."

"This again?" Naruto said as he looked Sasuke in his eyes "I already told you Sasuke, I can't be like you. Training and fighting all the time..."

"So what? You're going to keep letting this happening? Nothing changes? You said you won't let what happened last year happen again but here you are doing nothing."

Naruto shook his head "No! That's not true, I told him no when he tried to bully me again."

"And what then? You would had just let him punch you, if I hadn't showed up? Just continue to let him and others beat you up?" Naruto's mouth opened to protest but no words came out "Do you not want things to change?" He asked but Naruto remained silent.

Naruto thought about Sasuke's words long and hard. He bit his lips in frustration until he had an answer "Of course I do. But I need to do this myself, the days of you saving me are over. Next time I'll handle himself, even if I get my ass kicked." He said in voice of determination.

Sasuke crossed his arms as he stared at his friend with disappointment, not out of rage but frustration. He wanted nothing but the best for his friend but he knew better than anyone about how sensitive and stubborn Naruto can be about this. He spent majority of his first year defending and fighting for his friend's sake. Whether it was scaring of bullies like early or straight up fist fights, there were no lengths he wouldn't go. But of course the price of his sacrifice was his own reputation. Girls still fonded over him, especially now that his bad boy look matched his actions but not to others.

Like Hibachi, the school bullies learned to fear him and the teachers became cautious of him because of all the wild rumors surrounding the young Uchiha. He was an ideal student on the surface, good grades, good at sports, always present and on time. But his consistent fighting or some called it bullying landed him into some real trouble, in and outside of school.

And all because he wanted to protect his friend. Sasuke didn't seem to mind but Naruto certainly does.

"Not again, I can't rely on you and others like I did last year. Hibachi was right, you won't always be there. I have to learn how to stand on my own!" Naruto thought as he stared into Sasuke's eyes with a displeasured face.

"Is there anything else Sasuke? If not I'm going, homeroom is starting soon and I don't want to be late on the first day."

Sasuke sighed, knowing he lost "Fine. Do what you want." He said nothing as he put his hands into his pockets and left.

Naruto then let out a sigh, angered and frustration at the situation. Once again this bullying problem would put a dent on their friendship and while he hated it but he couldn't let Sasuke get involved again.

"I'll do something...yeah something." He mumbled to himself as he walked to the second floor to his homeroom while clenching his fist "One day I'll show them...I'll show them all."

"Naruto." A familiar female's voice he heard called out his name.

Naruto picked his head up to see a smiling face "Hinata."

Hinata Hyuga, one of Naruto's rare female friends. They met last year when Naruto was transferred into the school in the second month of the first year. He was assigned a seat next to her and the teacher told him to ask her for any help.

She was very timid and meek back in those days and still can be somewhat to this day, so she shyly greeted her when they first spoke. Hinata didn't know what it was about the Uzumaki but the first time see saw him he had a certain charm about him she'd never seen in anyone before. Whether it was the way he said 'Hello' and or the smile that had followed, something inside her heart awoke that day.

As cliche as it sounds but it was like love at first sight. The way he talked and carried himself with such humbleness was something new for Hinata.

She was surrounded her whole life by powerful people. Being born the heiress to Hyuga Corporation, she had huge expectations put into her the moment she left her mother's womb. Some of which she's failed to live up to. She went to an the most prestigious schools and came from an all girls school in middle school but managed to convinced her father to go to a co-ed and she's glad she did.

After quickly becoming Naruto's friend she started to come out of her shell and became more social with the rest of the class. It was all thanks to Naruto's smile Hinata can say she's the way she is now.

She gave the blonde a warm smile "We're in the same homeroom again."

Naruto nodded "Yeah looks like almost everyone from last year is."

"Then let's have a great year again Naruto." She said sill smiling.

"Oh what an angel!" Naruto thought as he slid the door open "After you." He offered her.

"Thank you." She said as she walked into the classroom.

"Yo Hinata! Naruto! There you guys are!" Yelled one Kiba Inuzuka.

There on the far left side of the room sat Naruto's circle of friends.

Kiba, Shikamaru Nara, Choji Akimichi, and Shino Aburame.

Naruto smiled as he and Hinata made their way to them.

"Hey guys looks like we lucked out." Naruto said.

"Good morning everyone." Hinata greeted.

Shikamaru nodded "Yeah morning." He followed with a yawn.

"He's as energetic as always as you can see." Shino commented coolly.

Choji chuckled "If he wasn't then something would be wrong with him."

"I just hope the teacher doesn't get as angry as the one last year at you sleeping in class." Kiba said.

"Come on give a guy a break. I'm not doing that this year." Shikamaru defended himself.

"Really? You're not gonna, not even once?" Choji asked his long time friend.

Shikamaru then looked up "Well no promises..." He said in a low voice.

"And there it is." Kiba said as he busted into laughter.

The group shared a laughter as the door opened again.

This time it was Konoha's High's Number 1 power couple walking in: Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno.

They hooked up last year almost instantly, and as a result Sakura became the envy of almost all the girls in school.

Sasuke with his good looks and cool personality he had was always been receiving the attention from the opposite sex, but he never accepted any of their advances. Either it was small gifts, Valentines chocolates, invites, or straight confessions, he was never interested in any if it.

So it of course came as a shock to everyone when they announced their relationship, especially since the two didn't know each other for long.

Naruto once asked about why Sasuke chose to date her but all he got for an answer was "She's actually the one that caught my attention and not the other way around for once..." He never quite understood what his friend meant by that but never pushed the subject farther. They were a cute and happy couple, that's all that mattered to him. So of course he became friends with Sakura and she too became a guardian for Naruto from bullies.

Something he always hated more than Sasuke saving him, was Sakura saving him. Getting save by a girl at his point really just didn't help his already damaged confidence or reputation. Not that being a girl meant he thought less of her but still it hurt his pride as a man. Felling their roles should be reverse.

Sakura saw Naruto's group and smiled as she waved "Hey Naruto!"

Naruto looked at Sakura while glancing at Sasuke. He then frowned remembering earlier "Hey." He said weakly as he quickly lowered his hand and head to avoid eye contact with Sasuke.

Sakura blinked in confusion as the others did too as they all had their eyes on Naruto. After not seeing her for weeks during the break, she expected a different reaction.

Sasuke though knew what the reason was for his acts "What's up with him?" His girlfriend next to him asked.

"It's not you, it's me." He answered "Look let's just grab a seat in the back, we'll talk to Naruto later." He told her.

Sakura frowned, it's not like the two to have fights. Disagreements, arguments then and there but extremely rare. The two came off more like brothers then friends to Sakura. She remembered all the times she and them would hang out with each other and the conversations they would have. Going off talking about various things and sometimes drifting into their own world so she had trouble keeping up with them. But it always put a smile on her face to see how close they were.

So the thought of the two actually getting into a fight and no longer being friends scared her. It reminded her of a similar situation she was in not to long ago with a certain, now ex best friend of her's.

She wanted to know more but decided against it. Knowing if Sasuke wanted to talk about it he'd tell her when he was ready to.

"Did something happened with you and those two?" Kiba asked Naruto.

The others looked to Naruto for an answer who still had his head down "Something happened? Hm I wonder...I don't really know." He lied, hoping they'd drop it.

The others looked puzzled at Naruto but Hinata frowned. He was still holding in his feelings, just like last year. And only one thing would make him do this. It must have something with his bullying situation again. That's the only explanation she could think of, but she knows how Naruto feels about the subject so she chose to remain silent.

She slightly gripped her hand in frustration of her timidness, feeling like she did last year. Powerless to help the one she loved but one day she'd break the silence.

On the other side of the room Hibachi gave Sasuke a death glare as he entered the room. He slumped back into his chair, hands in his pockets "One day Uchiha you'll get yours and then you too Uzumaki." He said to himself, promising revenge.

"Oh my god! He's still with that pink haired bitch? I was hoping they'd break up during break." One girl in the classroom commented on the couple.

"He's wasting his time on her." Another female said "He could do so much better. Right Ino?" She said to her friend.

The platinum blonde who was sitting as her two friends stood by her right and left side, lifted her head while she stopped playing on her phone to answer "Of course he can." She said as she smirked "I don't know what he sees in that billboard brow."

Her two friends then broke out in laughter "Billboard brow! That's a good one." She chuckled out.

"Yeah her forehead is huge! Probably bigger than her boobs." The other said.

Ino Yamanaka smiled as her friends laughed but felt a ping of guilt as she insulted her old friend. She'd known Sakura since preschool, they've always been best friends since. Until middle school when Ino chose popularity over everything, sacrificing a lot friends along the way. But she swore to herself that she'd never throw away her bond with Sakura until that day Sasuke chose her. After that day she had cut all ties to the girl and has been scornful ever since.

She glanced at the couple for a moment before she went back to her phone. Seeing them together always caused feelings of sadness, anger, and jealousy all at the same time.

The door then opened again, this time revealing the teacher "Alright everyone please take your seats." The remaining few who hadn't sat now moved to their seats.

"Talk later then Naruto." Kiba said as he gave his blonde friend a light wave as he and the others dispersed.

Naruto nodded to them as the teacher began to speak.

He was a tall and slim man with white hair, he wear a face mask along with an eye patch on his right eye. He looked at his students lazily as he spoke "Hello students, my name is Kakashi Hatake and I'll be your homeroom teacher for your 2nd year. Let's all get along and have a good year." He announced as class begun.

End Of The School Day

Naruto sighed as he walked from his locker "Thank god it wasn't a full day."

Being it was the first day of a new year the Freshmen had orientation while the upperclassmen had just a half day. Which was great news for Naruto who wanted nothing more than go home.

As Naruto reached the first of the school to change his shoes he was called out.

"Hey Naruto! There you are." Sakura's voice came from behind.

Naruto looked over his shoulder to see Sakura panted as if she ran here.

"Geez Naruto, you ran of class so fast I had to run after you!" Sakura said "So what's up? It's been weeks since I saw you, how have you been?"

Naruto gave her a small smile "Yeah, I've been good ya know. Same old, same old. Nothing really new to talk about."

Sakura then raised an eye brow "Really? Nothing? Cause the way you looked at Sasuke and the way he's been acting would suggest something different." She said as she moved in closer "Spill it Naruto, what happened between you two." Naruto's eyes widen as she asked. He moved his mouth to response but "And don't lie, you know I'll know if you are."

Now Naruto was really screwed, if anyone in the world could tell when he was lying it would be Sasuke and Sakura. He didn't want to get involve in his problems again but he didn't want to lie to her either.

Thankfully another voice came "Yo Naruto!" Kiba called out. Behind the Inuzuka was Shino, Hinata, Shikamaru and Choji. He smiled to his blonde friend "Oh hey Sakura! You're here too? Great!" He started as he turned to pointed to the group "The gang and I were just all talking about hanging out and catching up. You want to come with? You can invite Sasuke too." He told them.

Sakura smiled and nodded "Yeah sure, we're not doing anything so we'll come. You too Naruto." She turned to him.

The mention of Sasuke again made Naruto's face pale "Hmm sounds fun but I'll have to decline." He gave them a mournful smile as he rubbed the back of his head.

Everyone gave him a disappointment, questionable or surprised look "Why?" Choji asked.

"My uncle asked me to come straight home right after school for some house work." He lied to them but it was a realistic enough excuse they had to buy it.

"Ahhh really? Damn it."

"Well you can't break a promise."

"Agreed."

"How troublesome."

Kiba, Choji, Shino, and Shikamaru said but Sakura and Hinata remained silent with frowns on their faces.

Sakura sighed "Well I guess we can reschedule." She suggested.

Kiba nodded "Yeah maybe the weekend or something?"

Naruto nodded too "That's sounds great. So I'll be going now, later guys." He said as he made his hasty exit.

The other followed doing the same except a certain Hyuga.

Naruto was walking at quick pace, all he wanted right now was to go home and close his door to the outside world for the day. "Just gotta get home and escape for the time being..." He thought to himself but knew inside he couldn't keep running and avoiding the situation. "You said you'd change this year but look at yourself. Doing the same damn thing as before. Coward." He insulted himself.

Lost in his mind of thoughts of self deprecation he didn't notice someone trailing behind him "Naruto!" He heard his voice being called out by a female.

He stopped dead in his tracks and he turned around "Hinata?" He asked the girl.

Hinata slightly panted "Finally, I caught up to you." She said smiling.

"Why are you here?"

"I wanted to talk to you...privately if need be." She said with a small blush.

Naruto tilted his head "Really?" He felt a little excited over the idea Hinata had such a concern for him but he then remembered his lie "But I kinda have to go home so huh... "

"I know!" She answered almost immediately "So I mean...if you don't mind...I could maybe...come over?" She stuttered out as she poked her fingers together, one of her old shier habits she'd yet to break out of.

Naruto stared at Hinata with widen eyes and a shocked look on his face. He'd never imagined Hinata would ever ask something so bold. He then shook head "Wait, wait, wait! She's just coming to come over and talk! That's it! But then again, she's a girl and I'm a guy and we're both second years in High School now so...when a girl asks to come to your room anything can happen right? He asked himself as his mind raced with a million possibilities if he accepted, some of which made his face red "I've let my uncle influence me too much."

Hinata was still poking her fingers and was looking all around while waiting for a answer. Wondering if she came on too strong "I mean if it's a no then..."

"NO!" Naruto shouted as Hinata flinched. Realizing what he just said and did he cleared his throat "No! No! What I meant was I, it wasn't a no." He stared at her through his glasses, putting on the best confident voice he could muster "I would love to have you ov..."

"There you are Lady Hinata." Came a new voice but one the two were all familiar with.

Naruto and Hinata turned to the voice "Neji/Big Brother Neji." They said.

Neji was standing in front of the two wearing his school uniform with his arms crossed "I've come to pick you up Lady Hinata." He said staring at Hinata only, ignoring Naruto's existence.

Naruto noticed his blunt rudeness and frowned, not that he expected anything more from Neji Hyuga of all people.

Ever since Naruto met him in his first year it had always been like this. At first Naruto thought he was just incredibly indifference towards him but he swore every time Neji would look at him, there was a hint of pure hatred in his eyes. And to this day Naruto hadn't a clue why.

"Brother, there's no need to take me home. I was on my way to Naruto's house." Hinata told the other Hyuga.

Neji's face almost twisted in disgust but he quickly kept his composure "I'm afraid I'm here on behalf of a request from your father."

Hinata's eyes widen at the information "Father wants me? Why?" She asked.

"I don't know personally but I suggest we go quickly. You know how ill advised it is to keep Lord Hiashi waiting." Neji response.

Hinata bit her lip, knowing she couldn't possibly say no. She turned to the blonde standing next to her with apologetic eyes.

But Naruto just smiled and said "It's okay Hinata, go home. If your father sent for you, it's probably important." He told her.

Hinata nodded "Yes, I'm sorry Naruto." She then walked over to Neji as an expensive black car rolled next to them.

Neji opened the back door for Hinata, the Hyuga Heiress then bowed to Naruto before entering. Neji then gave Naruto a quick glare before he too entered the car.

Naruto frowned "Yup still hates me." He thought as he sighed as he watched the car pull off.

He then continued to walk to his home as he reviewed all of today's events in his head.

Standing up to Hibachi, arguing with Sasuke, lying to his friends, almost having Hinata coming to his house and now his encounter with Neji.

Today was most mentally exhausting then he would had ever expected but Naruto wouldn't let this get him down. After all change was gonna take sometime, and he was going to keep a positive attitude though it all. Especially since tomorrow as the 2nd years' field trip so he had that to look forward to.

But little did Naruto Uzumaki know that tomorrow his life would change forever and he'd meet his destiny.

Chapter's end.
