Moments of silence in the Mills-Prentiss household were few and far between and Emily made it her business to take advantage of each and every one. Even if it was only a few minutes, she was more than happy to just hold her wife and pretend that the two terrors in the next room were sleeping like angels instead of getting into mischief...

Currently, she lay snuggled into Lucy's chest, eyes resolutely shut even as she felt Lucy's gaze on her. "Did you give the girls cough syrup?" she teased. "I don't think they've slept in this late in their lives..."

Humming quietly, Lucy kissed the top of her head. "I turned their alarm clock back five minutes," she whispered conspiratorially. Supposedly, the clock was supposed to teach them to stay in bed until the face showed the sun, but...well, it worked better in theory.

"How do you feel?" Lucy murmured when Emily said nothing, merely sighing softly against her skin, eyes still shut. She didn't need to specify what she meant, they both knew exactly why this was a day of portent without anyone calling attention to it.

Emily shrugged with one shoulder. "Nervous, I guess," she admitted quietly, though she wasn't entirely sure why she was reticent to say so.

Tracing a slow pattern up and down her back with the pads of her fingers, her touch so soft and delicate, Lucy asked in her quiet knowing way, "Because you think you don't deserve for this to work?"

"Maybe."

"Em..." she whispered.

She sighed, already knowing the reassurances that were to follow. "I know it's illogical, but... I can't help it: we already have two beautiful, healthy, amazing children and I can't help but worry that that's all we get and hoping for anything more is just selfish."

Nodding slowly, Lucy assured her, "I understand your fear. I worry the same thing. But if we don't try, it won't happen – we don't have the luxury of surprise babies." It was a joke, but a weak one. "There's always a risk that it won't work and, if it doesn't, that doesn't mean you've failed and it doesn't mean it will never work. It's just math..."

Several moments of silence passed.

"Em, we don't have to do this..." she started to insist.

"But we already paid for the hormone shots and..." she started to make excuses.

Lucy shook her head firmly, refusing to entertain excuses that put Emily's health and sanity on a lower priority than anything else. "It doesn't matter. If you aren't completely comfortable with doing this, we won't do it. Your well-being matters more than the money we spent, okay? You are what matters to me – you and our daughters."

Emily sniffled softly. "Lucy..."

"I'm serious. We can adopt or try a surrogate or whatever you want. Or we can stick with Bug and Sunny and we'll be a happy little family of four," she insisted with a gentle smile. "Whatever makes you happy."

With a soft sigh, Emily whispered, "You make me happy."

"I should hope so, since I'm your wife," she teased, tickling her ribs playfully.

Emily rolled her eyes, squirming in her grip. "Smart ass."

With a giggle, Lucy tipped her chin up to kiss her softly. "I love you, you big weirdo."

"Right back atcha," she murmured against her lips.

There was a knock on the door and then Aurora's face peeked into the room, a mischievous grin on her face.

"What's up, Sunshine?" Lucy asked as the girl scampered onto the bed.

"Sissy big mess..." she whispered conspiratorially.

There was a knock on Emily's office door, then JJ emerged into the office before she'd had a chance to protest that she was busy. (If it were anyone else, they probably wouldn't have had the gall to just barge right in, but, well...it was JJ, afterall.) "You okay in here?"

She nodded, glancing up from her paperwork with a raised brow. "Why wouldn't I be?" she asked as if her behaviour that morning had been completely normal.

JJ came further into the room, settling in the seat across the desk from her and just staring at her for several long moments as if waiting for her to break down and confess everything. When that didn't happen, she said, "For one thing, I've seen you make about six trips to the bathroom already. For another, you're a shade off of chartreuse."

Emily did not appear amused and didn't need to reply to convey said lack of amusement.

"Why don't you come right out and admit what we both already know is going on," JJ prompted. When Emily said nothing, JJ supplied, "You're pregnant."

She heaved a sigh, stared down at her hands where she was anxiously picking at her nails. "I don't know," she admitted. "I'm late, but..."

"Well, have you taken a test?" JJ urged. She shook her head. "Well, get your coat, we're going to the drug store."

She shook her head more urgently. "No, Jayje. No way. I can't do this – I can't..."

She raised a brow. "Why not?"

"Because I'm scared!" she burst out.

"Em, everyone gets scared before taking a pregnancy test – regardless of what they want the result to be," she insisted. "But you've got to do this."

She sighed softly. "I know," she admitted.

JJ reached for her hand, squeezed it gently. "I'll be right there with you the entire time, okay?"

She attempted a smile, but it was watery. "Thank you," she whispered. "I'm so nervous about telling Lucy – I know she's really excited about this and I don't want to let her down."

"You're not going to disappoint her," JJ assured her. "She'll love you no matter what."

She nodded, attempted a smile.

"But from what I can see, there's nothing to worry about," JJ said. "I know a pregnant woman when I see one."

Emily managed a laugh. "Yes, well, can you keep it a secret for a little longer? I want to surprise Lucy and you know how Garcia can't keep a secret to save her life."

JJ laughed, nodded.
