Title: What Is This You Have Done?
Author: alliterator
Summary: "What makes you think I'm any of those?" The real Eve. Spoilers for Conviction.
Disclaimer: Everything is Joss, Mutant Enemy, and the WB's.
Author's Note: The title comes from Genesis 6-13:
Then the Lord God said to the
woman, "What is this you have done?"
The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."
Yay team.
That was what she said, but she didn't mean it. She didn't mean any of the things she said to them. The Senior Partners had instructed her to do so. Never reveal the truth, not about them, not about her, and not about the real reason they were here.
And, after all, wasn't she the great manipulator? Her name was Eve, but it should have been Lucifer, for wasn't she the Princess of Lies? That was why the Senior Partners had chosen her instead of Lilah. Lilah was too emotionally involved; she had known Angel and the rest for too long. The Senior Partners wanted fresh blood, so to speak.
She was the one who had planted the transmitters on Angel's clothing and cell phone, but not to find out what he was planning. She knew what he was planning, she just wanted to tip off Hauser and the wetworks team and see what would happen in the inevitable confrontation. She wasn't disappointed.
She replayed the images from the school videotapes she had stolen, watching as Angel killed Hauser and left only one of the men alive. Mercy, he had said. She knew mercy; it was what her creators had done when they let her live. Of course, she had killed them afterwards, so she knew mercy was pointless.
After reviewing the video, she saved them in her memory banks and then burned the tapes. She didn't want evidence that Angel was in the school at all. A clean-up crew had already taken all the bodies out, cleaned up the blood, and killed the remaining man.
At the end of the day, she went back downstairs where her "office" was: a gray, furniture-less room with a single electrical panel on the wall. She removed the uplink cord from her belly button and jacked it in to the panel.
Hooked up, she could see through all the video cameras in Wolfram & Hart. She saw Fred working vigilantly in the lab, even though everyone else was asleep. She saw Wesley studying one of the many tomes Wolfram & Hart kept and sipping a cup of coffee. She saw Gunn sitting in his room, watching a basketball game on the television. And she saw Angel, who was in the medical wing, standing over Cordelia, stroking her hair. The last two members of the original Angel Investigations. A catatonic and a vampire who was trying not to be alone.
Yay team.
