Years ago, Jane found out that big zoos had snake keepers, whose job was just to take care of the snakes. Jane thought that was her dream job. Now she wasn't sure if her dream job was to be a snake keeper or to be a mommy, but all fifth years were supposed to meet with their head of house and talk about their future careers. She felt that she should want a wizarding world job, but she did not even know much about wizarding world careers.
Jane looked through career pamphlets. Wizard and muggle relations seemed promising, but the pamphlet gave off the impression that it required higher social skills than Jane had. Healer sounded promising, but it seemed a bit advanced for her, and even required being good at potions.
Potions was Jane's worst subject, although she had been doing better at it this year than previous years, probably because they had a decent teacher now. Her best subject was charms.
Jane wasn't sure what made her think it, but she wondered if there was something going on with Luna that she wasn't telling anybody about. This was confirmed when she, Neville, and Hermione were about to leave the great hall to go to the Quidditch match.
"You coming, Luna?" Hermione said.
"You guys go ahead," Luna said.
"That was weird," Hermione said, "even for Luna."
Minutes later, Jane sat in the Quidditch stand with Neville and Hermione.
"Is there something wrong Jane?" Neville asked.
"I'm just worried about having to pick a wizarding world career. I don't think there's one for me."
"Don't worry too much about it," Hermione said. "You don't have to have one exact career picked out. I had had multiple things I was considering."
"All I had determined was that I wanted to do something in Herbology."
An ear-piercing whistle broke the conversation. Normally, Jane would put her earplugs in before Madam Hooch blew her whistle, but today she had been distracted.
"And, that's Smith of Hufflepuff with the Quaffle," said Luna. Now Jane knew what had been up with Luna.
"He did commentary last time, of course, and Dean Thomas flew into him, I think probably on purpose, it looked like it. He was being quite rude about Griffindor. I expect he regrets that now he's playing them – oh, look, he's lost the Quaffle. Dean took it from him."
"Now that big Hufflepuff player's got the Quaffle from him, I can't seem to remember his name, it's something like Bibble, no Buggins –"
"It's Cadwallader!" Professor McGonagall loudly said.
After the Quidditch match, Jane, Neville, and Hermione went to see Luna.
"I liked your commentating," Jane said.
"Thanks," Luna replied.
"You got a bit distracted a few times though, Hermione said.
Jane looked at Hermione, thinking that was rude, although she wasn't the best at telling when something was rude.
"Sorry, Luna," Hermione said.
Jane went to see her head of house, for the dreaded career talk. "To be honest, the only careers that appeal to me are mommy and snake keeper at a muggle zoo."
"Well, nothing wrong with either of those," Professor Sprout said. "Can muggle hear parseltongue?"
"No."
"That would certainly come in handy."
