Sitting in his quiet apartment, Harm let his fingers caress his guitar. Images flashed through his mind, touching on his moments at JAG. His previous partners, his foes, his friends. Softly swirling, the music filled the air, gently rising and falling as he considered each vision as it passed. When his thoughts reached Mac, he paused, the silence closing in. It was painful, but he had to do it.

"Was it worth it? If you had known it would end like this, would you still have done it?" his subconscious taunted. With a sigh, he continued playing and reminiscing. Her beautiful face, her smiles and tears, their kiss on the Admiral's porch. It was all gone now - his career, his relationship with Mac. He'd given up his commission to save her, and in the end he didn't get the girl. He paused again and the emotions he'd experienced during the kiss came back - elation, love, and fear. When they had drawn back from that kiss their eyes had met, questioning.

It was the fear, both his and hers, that had kept them apart, that had brought them to where they stood right now - nowhere. God, he did love her although he could never say the words. He tried to show her and had failed miserably. But that didn't matter any more. While his answer to the persistent voice in his head was "yes," he would do it again in a heartbeat, Mac's answer to the unspoken question between them was, sadly, no.
