Here's the next chapter!
Oh and I got inspired by Naruto (Kyuubi!Naruto take overs where his power causes bubbly aura around them) for what Harry and Hermione's raw magic look like – when not using incantations for other stuff like spells, charms, jinxes, hexes, curses.
Ooh or like Scratch on The Ghost And Molly McGee! How he and Molly hug and she doesn't get any ectoplasm on her each time.
Turquoise eyes for Harry (if I didn't already mention in first chapter).
I don't own Harry Potter. That belongs to J.K Rowling and various publishing companies including Scholastic Corporation, Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, Raincoast Books, or any other company that has to do with the movies or merchandise.
Hermione went to the children's section. She knew her reading level was above that by a wide margin, but she also thought no adult would look for her here. But just because strangers wouldn't care about her, didn't mean that the man and woman she escaped from couldn't find her. The library was her sanctuary, which was common knowledge to those people. Julius and Arielle would always punish her at the house.
She was looking around wildly, a twinge of fear coming back as she imagined those awful creatures coming here. And she had no doubt if they did, Julius and Arielle would kill her this time.
She saw a boy huddled in the corner, with an open book on his lap while he rummaged through his backpack.
Harry shuffled back from surprise as he felt a girl come to a stop next to him.
"Hello, may I sit with you? My name's Hermione Granger."
He looked at her, and took all of her in. She was shaking minutely while her eyes were wide with what looked like fear. He could see the whites of her eyes more. Harry felt a foreign feeling bubble up in him. He thought for a moment and realized it was his magic reaching out for her.
He made his voice a touch gentler than usual when meeting new people, concern coloring his tone.
"Sure, you can. I'm Harry Potter."
The smile she sent him was wide from relief, her eyes shining. Harry felt another pulse. She was nice to look at. Which distracted him from what happened earlier.
"You can sit down next to me if you want."
"Ok."
With that she plopped down next to him. Though this was good, she still felt a bit of adrenaline from escaping the house. Hermione scooched closer to Harry on the carpet.
Harry then grabbed one of his water bottles and passed it to her. He was surprised when tears formed in her eyes. He sent a small smile her way to hopefully make her feel better.
It seemed to have worked. For even though two tears spilled down her cheeks, Hermione smiled at him in return. She had a nice one, with her buck teeth showing a bit.
"Thank you, Harry. You're very kind."
He patted her knee.
"You're welcome, Hermione."
As she drank the water, she felt herself beginning to calm. Everything would be ok.
Hermione felt that she should start a conversation and get him to talk too. Silence was not what she wanted right now.
She looked at him. He was a small boy, she noticed. A little smaller than boys at her school, though the same height as her. But something about him radiated power. She had felt that immediately when drawing close to him.
"So you like to read?"
Harry nodded his head, smiling a little wider.
"Yeah, but I haven't able to come here in a while. Before recently I wasn't really allowed to go anywhere out of their house."
That was all too familiar to Hermione.
"Same here. I've always felt that this is a safe place for me, compared to place I was at. Books don't try to anything to you, except get you to turn the next page."
Harry hummed quietly at that, like he agreed. Or at least that's what Hermione thought.
More minutes passed just Harry and Hermione. He then got out some small snacks. Mostly cheese dip and cracker packets. He had dumped a bunch of other food in his bag too, with the help of his magic shrinking items. Harry even had some pre-packaged summer sausage that the Dursleys never got around to opening (since they had two extra).
He offered a pack to Hermione, which she gratefully accepted with a smile. It made him smile too. They took another look around, making sure no one saw them eating.
"So what are you reading?"
"Oh ah Tuck Everlasting. I've never read it before, but don't really plan on doing it tonight. I just picked it up so I wouldn't be bothered if a librarian happened to pass by. Truth be told, I've got too much on my mind to focus on it."
As Harry and Hermione munched, they talked about how they suffered much more than not being able to leave the house. Both silent as the other talked, nibbling quietly as they listened. Hermione had struggled to finish her detailed story, before Harry told his.
They both said they had no regrets about what they had done. Each kid explaining what they had done with their magic.
But then the most interesting thing happened, changing the mood instantly.
Blue watery-looking goop then floated in the air in front of them. The big blob went up and down, before it sent a warm pulse to Harry and Hermione. It then gave off a bright light before disappearing.
"Woah, was that what your magic looks like Hermione?"
Another smile sprouted from Harry, which made her match it.
"Yeah, it flows almost like water. What about yours, Harry?"
"Mine too. It reminds me a bit like gelatin."
They chuckled a bit at the sheer awe and shock of the two of them seeing their magic tangible once again.
It came as a startle when they heard a librarian speak next.
"Hey Tammy, I think the light came from over here."
This time there was another voice that joined the first.
"You sure, Paige? I could have sworn the light happened over by the traveling section."
Harry and Hermione clutched each other as they worried somebody would come across them and order them out. Their magic then came back and started to work in tandem. The combined force enveloped the two as it continued.
The kids sat in awe as they felt a change.
It was like being encased in a giant gelatin mold. The temperature was warm though, which was interesting. Something else happened that they didn't expect. Hermione and Harry could breathe easily, getting nothing in their mouths. And they didn't feel any wetness permeating their clothes or bodies or anything. The more curious thing however, was that light emitting from it this time didn't garner any attention. Nor did the quiet squishing watery sound as it swirled and moved around in the air.
The two curious librarians kept on walking, never even noticing the two boy and girl who holding one another.
Harry and Hermione looked around, both their arm strength lessening a bit now that the women hadn't spotted them.
Adults all around kept on doing their own thing. Quickly, time passed before the closing of the library officially began.
There was now silence everywhere. Both children breathed very quiet sighs of relief as they leaned their heads on the shelf behind them. Harry and Hermione talked quietly even as they knew no one could hear them. It was comforting. And very much soothing.
"Harry?"
"Yeah, Hermione?"
"Why do you think our magic protected us like that?"
"Well, I'm not really sure. But I'm glad it did. We would've been caught by those ladies since we didn't have time to hide."
"Yeah."
Hermione then bowed her head and closed her eyes, while putting her hands together.
"Thank you, magic. For keeping me and Harry safe. We really appreciate it."
Harry quickly followed her lead.
"Yeah, thank you. For keeping us safe. We're very grateful."
They both lifted their heads as they sat regularly again. Harry then began busying himself zipping up his backpack and putting his book behind him on the shelf. He turned to Hermione and found she looked much more relaxed now that the building was officially closed.
Not long after, Hermione fell asleep while resting her body against his own. Harry had no experience with touch that wasn't abusive before today, so this was incredibly new to him. When Hermione had put her arms around him and then let go earlier, he had felt a tiny bit colder. With her lying like this, he felt more of her warmth for a longer length of time. It was nice.
With no negative thoughts, Harry fell asleep with a smile on his face.
