Edward's POV
Less than a minute had passed from our magnificent love making. Bella and I were still wrapped in each other's arms when Charlie's heavy footsteps echoed in the hall. His thought process was practically incoherent; the only clear images in his mind were mine and Bella's faces. The image of the two of us was clouded with anger, and I was very concerned.
Realizing something wasn't right, I placed a kiss on the top of Bella's head. I couldn't read her father's mind, but I had a feeling we wouldn't be able to lay in bed much longer. He seemed to be headed for Bella's room, though I wasn't sure why.
"Son of a bitch." Charlie mumbled under his breath; an image of my face was in the forefront of his mind. His tone was very low, but I heard what he said.
His angry words made my body become rigid, I didn't move or speak. I laid there with my arm around Bella and her head on my chest, wondering what I did to make her father mad at me. I couldn't think of anything, but there had to be something since he was clearly enraged for one reason or another.
His footsteps thumped down the hall. My breathing became heavier with each step he took.
Charlie Swan was the only human that could make me - a vampire - have the responses of an unsure adolescent boy. Right at that very minute I felt like a scared teenager that needed to climb out of his girlfriend's window and make a run for it, before her father caught me in bed with her. But that made no sense to me. Charlie was aware I was in Bella's room, he allowed me to stay overnight though he wasn't thrilled about it. So, why should I feel the need to flee?
"Edward, you're breathing very hard. Is something wrong?" Bella asked, rubbing my arm.
Getting the feeling that this was the calm before the storm, I let out another heavy breath. I didn't have me to only think about, I had a family. I couldn't let my unsure immature emotions rule me.
"We need to get up and get dressed now." I told Bella with urgency in my tone.
"Why?" She asked, moving her face from my chest to properly look at me.
"Because your father's coming up here and something tells me he's not very happy; this isn't a social visit." I began, and moved my arms, releasing her from my hold. I got out of bed in one swift move, kicked our discarded clothes under the bed, and headed for the closet to grab us fresh clothes.
"What would make him unhappy this early in the morning?" She wondered, sitting up and putting her feet on the floor.
There was no time to give an answer to her question. Charlie started knocking loudly on the door at that very moment.
"ISABELLA!" Charlie's roar echoed through the house. "Open this door right this minute!"
"Hold on, Dad." Bella looked at the closed door as she spoke. Her tone was polite with a hint of fear.
Charlie didn't respond. But for some reason, he started knocking even harder.
"Just a minute." I said, pinching the bridge of my nose.
"Hurry up. We need to talk. All three of us." Charlie sounded like he was speaking through gritted teeth now.
Bella looked at me and I could tell she was silently asking what was going on. I didn't know. The only response I could give her was a shrug of my shoulders. The expression on her face turned from confused to worried.
"Edward! Bella! Open this door right this goddamn minute." He ordered, still banging on the door.
"Is everything alright?" Bella and I asked in unison.
She was at the dresser now, putting on a pair of panties and I was in front of the closet opening it. Both of us looked at each other, not sure what was wrong. But something was definitely wrong, this was not her father's usual morning behavior.
"Just open this door." He demanded, not giving us an answer.
"We will." I reassured him. "Just give us a minute, please."
Charlie didn't respond. His knocking continued, getting louder by the minute.
Bella's heart started beating wildly with fear as she tossed me a pair of boxers. I caught them and slid them on while she was trying to put on her bra in a hurry. She was having trouble, so I went over to assist her.
With both of us in our underwear, the knocking continued, getting louder each second. It made me a bit nervous as I reached for the bottle of air freshener that was on the dresser. Quickly I began spraying the scent of tropical sea breeze around the room, trying to cover up the smell of sex. That didn't work too well though. Now the air smelt odd, like we had sex on a tropical beach surrounded by coconuts and pineapples.
Trying not to think too deeply about that, I gave the air fresher one last spray and placed the bottle where it belonged. Charlie kept knocking and Bella stood frozen next to the dresser while I ran over to the closet and opened it.
Feeling as though we were running out of time, I began grabbing the first things my hands came in contact with. Which happened to be a strapless, red sparkly dress for Bella; it was something Alice had bought for her, and she never wore. For myself, I grabbed a dark green long sleeve Minecraft shirt and matching green pants that I never wore, but I guess I was about to. My clothes that I would have never purchased for myself, had been a gag birthday gift from Emmett who really loves video games.
I returned to Bella's side, handed her the dress I picked, she quietly took it from me. Though it wasn't something she would normally wear, she made no complaints about what I chose for her. Without a word she put it on, I helped her with the zipper, then proceeded to get myself dressed.
Zipping up my plants, Charlie's knocking wasn't knocking anymore. It was pounding, letting us know we did something wrong, and he was very angry about it. I really couldn't think of what would make him this mad.
There was another loud bang of his fist on the door, followed by his heavy breathing, and a snort. He sounded like an angry bull ready to charge, it was a bit frightening. I kept wondering what would make Charlie this furious. I couldn't think of anything. I really had no answers to offer myself.
There was more loud banging on the door, he was making sure we knew he was still out in the hall, waiting for us. The sound of his pounding took me back to another place and time.
I was five years old, and though my memories from that time are vague, I can recall a few childhood memories. Such as the first time I heard the unfriendly sound of a cop knocking on my family's front door. It wasn't because one of my family members had slipped up and drunk somebody, and the police were looking for the missing person. No. Not at all. The crime that had been committed was a bit stranger than that. It was also a crime my parents were completely unaware of, but my oldest brother knew all about.
The day before the police showed up, my kindergarten class had a field trip at the city Zoo. My brother Emmett, who was home from college, went on the trip too. He had been a chaperone, but also my partner in crime, when I insisted upon "rescuing" a baby alligator because the elephant would be too noticeable. Emmett agreed, of course. He assumed he had been sneaky, taking the small reptile out of its enclosure, and placing it inside a paper lunch sack.
Evidently Emmett wasn't as sly as he thought he was because the police showed up, bright and early the next morning to collect the baby alligator. After everything was explained, my parents had me give the baby alligator back and apologize to the Zoo, the police, and my teacher.
Grand theft alligator was definitely not one of my finer moments from my human life. But I sure learned my lesson.
My fuzzy memory ended but Charlie's knocking didn't. For the first time since Bella and I got out of bed, I realized he was not knocking as a concerned father, but more like a cop who wanted to put fear in someone. Why did I feel that someone was me?
I pulled my shirt over my head and ran my fingers through my hair a couple of times, trying to make myself look somewhat presentable. Both of us were dressed now, in the most obvious after-sex outfits ever. I looked utterly ridiculous, like a walking billboard for a game I never played. While Bella was as beautiful as ever. Though her dress was a bit out of place, she appeared ready for a night on the town, but it was barely sunrise.
Bella dashed to the door, almost tripping over her own feet while I stayed where I was. She unlocked the door and opened it while a horrible feeling began in the pit of my stomach.
"Dad–" Bella began but Charlie cut her off.
"Isabella Marie Swan, what the hell is this?" He asked, his voice hard. His thoughts were on the trash, giving nothing helpful away.
From where I stood, I couldn't see his face or what he might be holding. I wasn't sure what was going on.
"Crap…." Bella said, her voice trailing off.
I moved to the center of the room right then. As always when Charlie was present, my movements were slow and human. Even though he knew I was a vampire he wasn't aware that I had superhuman speed, strength, or that I could read minds. There was some things Alice had seen that he wouldn't have taken very well. So, I never clued him in.
Charlie caught sight of me then, he took a double take, then gazed at Bella's outfit and did the same. Up until that point I don't think he realized Bella had on a dress, not something she would have normally worn.
"What the hell are you two wearing?" He was completely dumbfounded.
Neither Bella nor I answered.
He shook his head and started questioning again. "Bella, what is this?"
Bella was hesitant in giving an answer, Charlie asked again.
Fear that made no sense to me coursed through my body at the sight of Bella's father. He was dressed in his uniform and his face was red with anger. In his right hand that was covered by a black glove he held up something for Bella to see. My eyes landed on the item and my breath got caught in my throat. All at once I didn't feel like the indestructible vampire that I was. No, very far from it. I felt like a kid. Like the awkward seventeen-year-old I was frozen as, to be precise.
I shut my eyes and ran a hand through my messy hair. Why didn't I throw the trash into the neighbor's garbage can last night?
"A pregnancy test." Bella said in a small voice.
"A positive pregnancy test." Charlie corrected. "I found it in our garbage can outside. Who does it belong to?"
"Um. Me?" Bella squeaked, her voice trembling. Her words that should have been a statement came out as an unsteandy question.
"Oh, you gotta be kidding me." He shook his head. "You're pregnant again? You just gave birth three months ago. What in the hell were you thinking?"
His question was meant for Bella, of course. However, his hard brown eyes landed on me right then.
I opened my mouth to speak but he spoke first.
"Don't say a word, Edward." he said to me. "I know you weren't thinking with your brain. Otherwise, this wouldn't have happened again." He threw his hands up in the air. "Boy, you need to get your hormones in check."
I gulped, feeling very ashamed. He was right about everything he said, I couldn't deny it.
"Dad, don't." Bella said, rubbing her hands nervously on the side of her dress.
"No, Bella," Charlie said in a hard tone, putting his palm up like a traffic cop.
Bella started to say something, but her father wasn't about to hear it. He began to speak before she could.
"Just look at your outfits," He gestured to her fancy dress and my Minecraft ensemble. "I'm not an idiot, I know what your random outfits mean. Neither one of you has control over your teenage hormones. Obviously." He rolled his eyes.
"Great." Bella covered her face in embarrassment.
"Charlie," I began, ready to change the subject. "This is not the way we were playing on telling you that we're expecting another baby." I moved forward, standing next to Bella now. Blush heat was rolling off of her in waves as I put my arm around her waist.
"Sure. And just how long have you guys known this time?" He said in a very skeptical tone. His mind was now on us keeping Bella's first pregnancy a secret for five months. He assumed we were repeating history.
"We just found out last night." I said truthfully. "We were planning on announcing it properly when the time was right."
"Dad, I wanted to wait to tell you, I was going to. But I didn't want to say anything to anyone so soon." Bella did her best to explain this in an even tone. Underneath her calm manner I could tell she was becoming emotional, I held her closer to me.
Charlie said nothing. His thoughts were blank, and so was the expression on his face. His heart hammered in his chest, threatening to explode. While his complexion turned every shade of red you could find in a box of Crayola crayons.
The three of us stood there on the threshold for the longest time. No one spoke, not even uttering a word. The only sound was Bella's and Charlie's heartbeats and all of us breathing. It was so quiet until another sound interrupted the silence, Charlie's phone went off, someone was calling him. Too busy to be bothered by it, he fished it out of his pocket, ignored the call, and shoved it back in his pocket.
"You." Charlie spoke in a dead serious tone, pointing a finger at my chest and looking me square in the eyes. "I want you out by today."
"No. Why?" Bella spoke before I could.
"Because, Bella," Charlie quickly replied. "You are only eighteen and a senior in high school. You have a baby and now another one on the way." He shook his head in disappointment. "Apparently letting you two play house was the wrong thing to do. I assumed I was doing the right thing for both of you after Lizzy was born." He looked at Bella and then at me and I saw the hurt in his eyes.
"I'm sorry." I said, trying to keep my voice even.
Bella gave me a disappointed look; she didn't seem like she agreed with me apologizing to her father after he asked me to leave.
"Why are you so upset that I'm pregnant now? You didn't act like this last year, what changed?" Bella asked her father.
"First time I gave both of you a pass." Charlie glared at me. "First time, both of you were younger and didn't think things through with what could happen. It was an "opse, we didn't know it could happen" kind of thing. But there's no excuse this time. Both of you knew perfectly well what could happen if you weren't being safe." He huffed. "You guys are a bit older now and have a newborn. I never thought both of you would be so stupid to not use birth control."
"But we did. We have been trying to be safe." Bella insisted and I agreed.
Charlie looked from his daughter to me. "Not very well if you keep getting my daughter pregnant." He bellowed, wagging an angry finger at me.
I didn't respond, but a thought occurred to me from something he said earlier.
"Charlie, you can ask me to leave but you can't stop me from seeing my daughter. Or even Bella for that matter." I said with panic.
Charlie's eyes locked with mine, immediately he saw the fear and concern that was evident in my eyes as well as painted on my face. Flashes of arguments he had with Bella's mother about her leaving him with baby Bella crossed his mind. He was remembering now, about how scared he had been in those moments of Bella's mother keeping her from him, until the day she took off leaving Bella behind. There was surely a lot of saddens in his mind, it was not a happy place to be.
Seconds passed and his thought process changed. Memories that were from eighteen years ago and sad, switched to more happier ones that were more recent. There in his mind images of me with Lizzy flickered at lighting speed. There was one in particular that stood out from the rest.
In that memory Lizzy was about two weeks old, she was just a tiny thing. She had fallen asleep on my chest while I was laying on the couch with her. Not wanting to disturb her, I didn't move for almost three hours, only whispering when Charlie or Bella spoke to me, because I didn't want to wake her. He kept replaying that memory and his face began to soften.
"Edward, I wouldn't even think of that. I wasn't suggesting something like that, I wouldn't even try keeping Lizzy from you." He said truthfully. "But you're no longer welcome to stay in my house, you've gotten my daughter pregnant one too many times."
"That was never my intention." I apologized.
Thoughts of Bella pregnant in the future, with twelve children beside her, and a baby on her hip, crossed Charlie's mind at that point. His lava red complexion returned. Though I didn't think it was possible, his face was even more red than before. He seemed to want to blow up at me and I braced myself for it.
Whatever Charlie might yell at me, I deserved it. After all, Bella wasn't even in college, and we were going to have two babies.
"Dad," Bella said, not hiding her anger. "Why are you so hard on Edward? He stuck around and took responsibility for his child when most seventeen-year-olds wouldn't, leaving the mothers to do everything. He's a good father to Lizzy and you never give him credit."
Bella was crying now and my dead heart broke. Not wanting her to be stressed, I wrapped my arms around her.
Without warning Charlie's thoughts changed and his completion was less red. He was thinking of Bella and what she said. Just like me, he was worried about her being stressed, though he was still mad at me.
"Your right, Bella." Charlie said to her in a defeated tone. He then turned to me, and said, "I appreciate how you stepped up and have been a great dad to Lizzy, but I cannot condone Bella being pregnant so frequently. For that, I have to say, pack your bags and leave now."
I could see that Charlie was serious about me not staying in his house another minute. It was also easy to see that he was trying to keep the peace for Bella, stress wasn't good for her. And if he were to yell at me, like he was thinking about, that would really stress her out.
His words for me to leave hung in the air. I figured that if I was in his shoes, I would feel the same way. Rather than protesting I decided to do as he said, after all I had been staying in his house rent free, he owed me nothing.
"Fine. I'll leave." I said without hesitation.
Bella wiggled in my embrace. Sensing she had enough of me hugging her, I dropped my arms and set her free.
Charlie blinked. He seemed surprised at how easy that was.
"You can't do that," Bella half yelled, grabbing my hand, and stepping forward. "Dad, Edward lives here! You can't just kick him out."
Charlie was shaking his head now. I kept quiet not wanting to add fuel to an already heated moment. I didn't know what he would say next, his muddy thoughts gave me no clue.
"No, Bella." Charlie said in a firm voice. "The boy that has no job and who keeps getting you pregnant only visits here and spends the night." He shuddered at the sentence he just spoke. "You, and Lizzy live here. He does not."
"If Edward leaves, so do I and Lizzy too. We're all a package deal." Bella was upset and her tone let everyone know.
"Bella, think this through. You don't have to leave just because I must." I said gently, trying to keep her clam. I didn't want her to feel stressed nor did I want things to escalate with Charlie. "This was my fault, let me go and you stay here with Lizzy for a little while."
Bella turned around, facing me, her facial expression suggested I said something completely crazy. I could tell she wanted to protest with me, but her father spoke before she could.
"Correction, this was both of your faults." Charlie's tone was louder than before. "It takes two to tango, have either of you heard that expression before?"
"Yeah." Bella said, turning to him. She didn't sound like she understood where he was going with this.
"Yes, sir, I have." I spoke respectfully to him.
"Good." His complexion was now bright red, and he was doing an excellent job at not yelling at us. I had a feeling he wanted to yell at me, especially. But more than anything he wanted to get his point across, and for that, he kept calm. "Since both of you are eighteen and legally adults, both of you need to figure this out on your own."
Truthfully, I would never be eighteen or legally an adult, but that was the age I was pretending to be, and Charlie believed I was. Anyway, I understood what he was getting at.
"What?" Bella was stunned.
"Bella, this is your fault too. Getting pregnant again was as much your fault as it was Edward's." His nostrils flared, his skin was a purple color now, and his voice was three octaves louder. "If you want to leave with him, by all means, go ahead."
"Uh?" Bella's jaw dropped and she rapidly blinked her eyes.
I was quiet. Taking in his words, I felt shocked.
Usually, Charlie blamed me for anything that happened, especially when it came to Bella being pregnant. At least I thought so the first time around. I assumed by him doing that, blaming me – rather than accepting the fact that his daughter was a willing participant – was easier for him to digest. But this was different. He wasn't placing the blame all on me this time. He was putting the responsibility on both of us. He was angry, that was clear. Yet, he was trying to go about it in a professional way and speak to us in a level headed manner. In other words, he was speaking more as the Chief of police and less like an emotional father.
It reminded me of the way my dad was with me when I was human, and I was sick or injured. He would always hold onto his professional bedside manner of being a doctor, instead of a father ruled by emotions.
"You're kicking me out because I'm pregnant?" Bella asked, sounding hurt.
For a flash of a second I saw pain in Charlie's eyes. Thoughts of Bella as a baby and child flashed through his mind but he held his ground and shook his head.
"No, Bella, this is a life lesson." Charlie said to her. "You are too old to be coddled, you're eighteenth and a mother. If you want to leave and go stay at his parents' house with him, I won't stop you."
"But you're kicking me out?" Bella said again.
"No." Charlie shook his head. "But you need to figure this out on your own. I'm clearly not doing either of you any favors since both of you seem to think it's fine and dandy to have unprotected sex and keep having babies. It's time to venture off into the real world, and figure things out as adults should."
The tone of his voice was strong, but his thoughts were not. His mind was a mess, going a mile a minute now. Just like me, he didn't think it was a wise decision for Bella and Lizzy to leave his house when I had no way of supporting my little family, everything would fall on my parents. However, she was an adult, as he had pointed out, and he wasn't about to argue with her, or demand or even beg her to stay.
"Edward, did I make myself clear? I want you out before I leave for work." He said to me in a firm tone.
I nodded my head. It was the only response I could manage.
Shocked as could be both Bella and I stood there, staring at him. He kicked me out, well, not in so many words, but well… I wasn't welcome to stay at his house any longer.
"Here you go," Charlie put the pregnancy test in my hand. "You shouldn't toss your biggest accomplishment away. Why not frame it?"
His words were sarcastic, and I could tell he didn't want an answer. With that, he walked away, leaving me and Bella alone with the pregnancy test. He then headed downstairs without looking back at us.
For a couple of long moments, Bella and I just stood there in the threshold of her room, just staring at one another. Finally, things sunk in, and I was the first to move and speak.
"I need to start packing up now." I tucked a strain of her hair behind her ear. "Charlie's serious about what he said. He doesn't want me here any longer."
"Or me." Her voice broke and she was fighting back tears.
"Your father loves you," I shoved the plastic stick in my pocket and warped my arms around her. "He isn't happy about certain things, and I can't say I would be either…" my voice trailed off.
"You mean if the same thing happened to Lizzy when she's older?" Bella questioned, speaking into my chest.
"Yeah." I said and grimaced. That was something I didn't want to think about. "Anyways, he doesn't want you to leave, just me."
Bella shook her head. "But he said –"
"Love," I interrupted her, holding her at arm's length to see her face. "What he said and what he hopes for are two different things. He really doesn't want you to leave until you are ready, and we are definitely not ready to live on our own just yet."
"Then why did he…?" She couldn't finish her sentence; she was so upset.
"Because he knows we love each other, you're safe with me, and we don't want to be separated from each other." I answered her, listing a few reasons. "So, to avoid an argument with me or to upset you any, he decided to let us both leave peacefully since you brought it up. Though, I swear, he really doesn't want you to go. It's tearing him apart inside."
"Hmm." Bella huffed her only reply.
From downstairs I heard Charlie speaking to someone on the phone. I wasn't really sure who he was talking to, but guessed it was someone from the station because he was explaining that he got held up at home due to a family emergency and would be at work later in the morning. His voice was peaceful, but his thoughts were not. His mind was a whirlwind of images and emotions, he was not in a good place.
I felt bad about everything, I really did. But at least it didn't end up as a big blow up and I wanted to leave before that could become a possibility.
