Fast Food

The newly hired cashier's handsome golden eyed reflection watched from the gleaming service counter as he scrubbed the surface clean. Satisfied that the stainless steel was spotless, Messiah deposited the scrubber into the sink. Straightening the little white paper hat over his dark green tresses he returned to his post.

The bell on the door rang announcing the entrance of a customer. A business man in a neatly pressed blue suit wound his way through the tables and chairs set up in the dining room to stand in front of the menu. Watching the man dispassionately Messiah waited for his customer to decide what to order.

Messiah could never understand why humans took so long in decided what kind of fuel they would ingest. Fuel was fuel. As a biohumanoid he didn't eat much even though he was capable of doing so. When he did eat he never paid much attention to what he was eating. The longer he stared the more fidgety the customer seemed to become.

Cautiously approaching the counter the man smiled tentatively at young man who manned the cash register. "Hello, I would like a small orange juice and a egg and bagel sandwich."

"I am sorry sir, but we switched to the lunch menu a half an hour ago." Messiah delivered in a flat monotone his facial expression not changing at all.

"Are you sure you don't have anything left from breakfast? I could really go for a bagel."

Grabbing the man by the collar Messiah lifted him up until his feet were dangling in the air. The cash resister and all the other machines in the restaurant started beeping as Messiah eyes flashed with irritation.

With shaking hands businessman tried to free himself from the vice like grip the cashier had on him. How could the boy be so strong? Fear filled him as he stared into those beautiful but distant golden eyes.

With a hint of annoyance in his voice Messiah repeated what he had said earlier, "I am sorry sir, but as I told you before we switched to the lunch menu half an hour ago."

"A...ah...yes, I'm sorry I must have misheard you." The man stammered lifting his hands in a placating gesture.

"What would you like to order?" Messiah asked politely as if he wasn't aware that he was still holding his customer a few feet off the ground.

Blurting the first thing to enter his mind, the frightened customer played along hoping that it would give him a chance to escape, "I'll have a cheeseburger and a large soft drink."

The green haired youth considered the request for a moment before nodding in acceptance. "Very well. What flavor of drink would you like?"

"Any flavor!" The customer all but shouted his nerves shredded by the weird events unfolding in what should have been a simple run for something to eat.

"There is no need to shout, I can hear you just fine sir." With a reproving look for such rudeness Messiah lowered the man to the ground. "Would you like fries with that?"

Glancing furtively at the door the man readied himself to flee as soon as he had the chance. "Fries would be great."

Letting go of his customer Messiah turned his attention to the cash register. "Your total is $4.98."

When the customer didn't answer, Messiah looked up to find out what was wrong just in time to see the businessman ducking out of the store. The bells above the entrance jangled discordantly as the heavy glass and metal door slammed shut

"It seems he wasn't hungry after all. Strange, not only can they never decide what kind of fuel they want, but they don't even know when they need it or not." Shrugging Messiah canceled out the order from the register. "I guess I'll never understand the Earthians."
