Chapter 17: I Trust You
Hours Before:
Naru pov
The skies are turning dark once again, the air is moist and it's getting chillier, so another storm is coming once again.
I need to take a bit more pictures of Mai. I kept my eyes on the secret picture I took of Mai since I missed her terribly. These last twenty-four hours have been hell for me.
I need to hurry up and finish this so I can return to her.
"They are pulling up." I heard John speak snatching my gaze away from the picture and lifting my gaze to see Bou-san's car and Officer Stan's as well pull up, parking near the old factory, which finally Lin could locate because it was located in another path that he never took, that's why he has never seen it before after he and I went to search for the Factory yesterday after Mai left.
I hope this work. I place my cell away and fixed my black jacket.
"This might or not might work, but if the diary has truth to it, then we can finally solve this mystery and at last we can get justice," John pats my back as Miss. Hara came up to us, after closing the lid of her water bottle.
"I forgot to tell you something," she says causing me to look at her.
"What?"
"Last night during dinner, I took notice of something particularly strange," she said to me turning to face Bou-san who was now getting out of his car, with some of his belongings at hand.
"What exactly did you feel?" John asks this time, she turns to look at him.
"Remember I told you that I felt a hidden spirit?" she said to me.
I remember that it can be the same one that tried to drown me.
"Yeah? I remember," I said, watching Bou-san go up to Officer Stan.
"It's gone," she said, causing my heart to drop, turning to look at her.
"What do you mean it's gone?"
"It was just gone, can't sense it anymore, it was gone after Mai left this place to be precise." my blood ran cold at her sudden words.
"Naru?" John took notice of my stance as Ms. Hara looked at me.
So my theory was wrong, then…. Who in the world is that ghost?
"Noll? Is something wrong?" John takes notice of my stance as Lin came up to me to say something, but stops.
"What's wrong?" he asks worriedly since he as well took notice of my silence.
"Let's finish this as soon as possible," I said now getting peeved by this situation.
I need to get to Mai as soon as possible.
…..
….
...
After welcoming Officer Stan we managed to enter the old abandoned factory, as we spoke.
"Are you sure you'll be alright with this?" I asked him, taking notice of his muscles becoming stiff with every step he took.
"Just bad memories, but are you sure there was no fire? I mean…"
"Do you remember any fire?" I question him.
From the diary, there wasn't a fire, but smoke that one of the machinery caught on fire, and since they lack fire safety as well, they all suffocated to death due to only the exit being overwhelmed by the workers, and they became stuck. From the diary, when Mr. Arata's grandfather came to do his shift, it was too late when he arrived, he saw his coworker's bodies piled up at the entrance trying to get out. It was a horrid sight he had to witness.
"No, when I arrived, there was a sense of heavy smoke, but we never witness a fire, there were so many bodies piled up in the entrance going to the back, and…." he swallows hard as he looks up in the old rotting roof, and he fists his hand.
"My daughter's body hanging from there," he shivers from the memories as his voice is thick with remorse and sadness.
"She wants justice, let's give her that," Miss. Hara said, looking up at him.
"How?"
"Telling the truth to everyone, that's all she wanted," I told him.
"That would make her soul move on?" he said, causing me to nod at him.
"Then are you ready to know the truth?" I asked him. He swallows hard, but nods, looking back at me. I place my hands in my pockets, began to walk toward the middle of the factory, and turn my heel to my right to look up at the roof.
"Your daughter was madly in love with the Chief's younger son,"
"Yes, his name is Lee," he said.
Lee, alright finally we get his name.
"The chief and you were against it and even had some dispute over it, am I right, or am I wrong about that?" I question him.
"You're right, we had a few arguments about that, even a day before this place went into hell, we had our biggest argument near this dreaded place. I almost broke his nose if it wasn't for his son coming in and interrupting us."
Oh, that explains what Mai saw, it was both of them arguing.
"The next day Mr. Ito caught your daughter and his son Lee in place, so out of the rage he grabbed her and humiliated her in front of the people for them to break up."
"So that bastard killed her? What the hell?" Rage consumed him causing me to shake my head.
"No, he never killed her, he bullied that is true, but she couldn't handle it, nor the gossip she was receiving, she became depressed and took her own life, by hanging herself." My heart broke by this situation, no one should be driven to that point.
"H… how do you know?" he stutters as tears gathered in his eyes. John came up to us and showed him the diary.
"Because she admitted to Mr. Arata's grandfather that she was depressed and she wanted to kill herself. He tried to talk her out of it, and she never let anyone know about it. This is horrible, that man didn't think of the consequences when doing everything to separate them. I... I can't even... I don't get how people can be this evil." John shook his head with grief.
Stan stumbled backward a bit as though his heart couldn't take it, so I move rapidly and grabbed him with the help of John.
"Give me a minute, and... And the death of those people?" he asks.
"I'm not sure, it wasn't said in the journal, only Mr. Ito can answer that," I said when we heard footsteps coming in. We turned to see Lin with Mr. Ito is entering the factory. His eyes roam the old place and flinched as though memories were flashing in his mind.
"You bastard!" Stan began to rush to his side, Mr. Ito flinched, but John and I pulled him back.
"Don't do anything rash," I said as he turns to look at me with murdering eyes.
"Don't do anything rash, that bastard is a piece of trash who took my only daughter away from me. Do you know how much I love her? She's the only thing that my wife left behind after she gave birth before passing away. I promised to take care of her and love her. She was a good kid and fell in love with that bastard son." He was on the verge of crying, but his anger filled even more.
"I know, but you're an officer of the law, you know how these things work, let's hear him out first," I said giving him a stern look.
"It's true." Mr. Ito began causing us to look at him.
"Explain," I simply said. He sighs, holding his cane tightly.
"I was not having his daughter marry Lee, I even gave her a chance to leave and pay her, but she didn't accept it. I admit they were so deep in love. Yet my pride was more than I could handle. I even humiliated her that day by wrapping a rope around her neck. Yet, I never intended to have her dead. I just wanted her to leave, I even spread fake rumors. I... I commit a horrible sin, I know, but her death and the death of those people are not my faults, it was a crazy coincidence." he admits to us.
"Then you're telling us that you didn't block their entrance?" I asked him.
"No, I did not, I left afterward, so I have no idea who blocked it, I left before anything happened," he explains.
So someone blocked the way?
"What about her friend Emica?" I question him. He went still at my sudden words, tightening his grip on his cane.
"I don't know who killed her that same day, someone burnt her to a crisp, I... I was stunned," he admits to us.
"We never mentioned her death, I simply asked you what about her friend Emica. How do you know that Jane Doe is her?" I question him, causing his face to pale.
"Are you sure you have nothing to do with it? We have found evidence of you visiting that cave,"
"You do? Wait, aren't you prohibited from filming the cave? You broke the rules," he said, irritated, but I shook my head.
"Not really, our camera is designed to capture everything, even if is not present at the cave, it will capture the movement. It's called a three-way camera. Plus Mr. Arata permitted us to do so, so we kept the end of our deal." Lin says, which caused Mr. Ito to close his mouth.
"Then explain to us, why did we capture you twice going to the cave," last night after I hang up with Mai, the camera captured Mr. Ito now a clear picture of him, but wearing a wig and a white dress inside of the cave, which was weird to look at.
"You were wearing a wig and a white gown, why is that?" I asked him. He thins out his lips looking down in embarrassment.
"He isn't the one that killed me, but he feels remorse," I heard behind me. I turned to see Emica appearing next to me, looking at Mr. Ito, then turning her gaze back at me.
"I remembered after I showed your wife that day. Please tell her, thank you. Thank you for giving me a voice and justice, the man that did that wasn't my love, nor Mr. Ito, but Lee. Erity boyfriend. He was fascinated by me to the point he became a stalker, not sure why because I had no interest in him. Yet he forced himself on me, and then killed me, burning my body."
"What about your lover? That soul that tried to drown me?" I questioned her.
"He was trying to protect me, that Mr. Ito's oldest son, Aoto, Lee killed him after he killed me since he witness everything. I saw it after my soul separated from my body."
"I will, you have my word, and may I ask, why you and Emica would watch Mai?" I question her.
"To protect her, she will wake up, don't worry, but you have to find the truth. I can say, her love for you is true, love her deeply and treasure her, life is so short to be wasted in nonsense."
I nodded, but so confused by her words.
Wake up? That again. What does that mean?
"Thank you once again." with that, she leaves, and I turned to face the others. They were into their conversation to take notice of what just took place with me and Emica.
Yet, the strange part is that Erity hasn't shown up, but Officer Stan finally shrugs us off, and takes out his handcuffs, going up to Mr. Ito and taking his wrists to arrest him.
...
...
...
"So the case is solved?" Bou-san asks while waiting in the police station two hours later, after John and Bou-san perform their exorcism just in case. Miss. Hara left with John since she was called to a shooting they had to retake. Well, I think she's trying to avoid Mai, and I'm sure sooner or later they have to meet up.
"About, but it's odd that Eriti soul hasn't shown up," I admit as we headed out the door, only to hear the thunder roar the dark skies, and the heavy rain pour hard. I stopped in my tracks and checked my watch, it was about to be ten the night.
It's late. I hope Mai isn't sleeping when I reach her. I smiled at the thought of Mai waiting for me making my heart warm up.
"Darn my reception isn't working," I heard Bou-san speak capturing my attention, I turned to look at him, he was messing with his phone, trying to find a spot to find a good signal. I took out my own and saw a few missed calls from Mai.
I didn't hear it. My heart dropped when I called back, but the call drops.
Without hesitation, I rushed out, leaving Bou-san behind.
….
….
...
Not caring about the rain or anything, I basically ran towards the hotel since it's not far from the police station, about ten minutes away, this village is rather small.
"This kid trying to kill me," I heard Bou-san gasp out, as he runs behind me. I grabbed the door handle and pull it open and stepped in, only to slam myself against someone.
"Eii!" the person yelps as I move rapidly to wrap my arm around the small woman and held her firmly against me as she gasps in shock, taking a hold of my arm.
"I'm terribly sorry, I didn't mean to…." but her words cut off, as she looks at me.
"Geez Naru, I hope you have a good explanation," I heard Bou-san say in the background.
I look down to help her, apologies, and just go on to my wife, but as soon our eyes connect, the world seems to stop and my heart skips a beat. Her worry looks drop and the purest happiest expression passes through her features as though she has seen the most amazing thing in this world.
My heart was wild, not sure if this is normal, but... I couldn't get enough, I was trapped by her.
I was so bewitched by her beauty and love, that I have forgotten about everyone around me. Her eyes become deep just love in her eyes, luring me in more.
"Naru!" she yells as she wraps her arms around me, and pulls me down to kiss my cheek, breathing out in relief.
I snake my hands around her small body, and pulled her into my embrace, holding her gently, but tight in my arms.
"I didn't mean to miss your calls, I didn't hear it. I just realized right now, I wanted..." I began to ramble, feeling a bunch of feelings that I couldn't progress as Mai shook her head, holding me tighter.
"All that matters is that you're here with me right now." she snuggles into my chest while holding me closer to her. I lift my gaze to spot a young man looking over us as Bou-san takes a step next to me.
"Um, I'm out of the loop, what happened?" he asks confused looking at us.
"That's what I want to know, what happened?" I said.
"Mai-chan?" the young man, he's tall, with dark wavy hair, almost looking foreign, not Japanese, with bright hazel eyes, and pale completion calls out. Mai turns to face the young man.
"This is Naru, I'm better now, thank you so much." she smiles at him tenderly. His cheek turns pink and smiles at her sweetly. He looks about our age.
"Oh, this is Ethen-kun, Ethen, this is Oliver," Mai introduce us since she took notice of my curious glare.
"Nice to meet you, Mai has talked about you a lot, sorry, my Japanese isn't that great mate," he said with a slight accent. I shook my head.
"You can speak in English if you wish, but you do a good job so far. What exactly happened?" I asked as Mai looks up at me, just staring with a profound look while I kept my eyes on the young man.
"Well, I was heading for my room after leaving my parent's room, and when I passed by, I saw a woman trying to enter the room, didn't think of it too much, but when she turned to look at me, she ran away. So I became suspicious and reach Mai's room and found it wide open. I entered, after a minute of calling out, and checked around, until I heard a noise in the bathroom. So I went in and spotted Mai passed out in the tub." He explains to me in English, with his heavy accent, and I can tell he's Australian.
"He helped me, and took me down here half an hour ago," Mai explains to me. I am not thrilled to hear about this as I look at the young man.
"Thank you for protecting her, I wouldn't know what to do if something had happened to my wife," I told him in English. He looks a bit startled by the news.
"Wife? Oh, too bad, she's cute, then congrats, but I'm surprised, you're British huh? Your accent," he chuckles causing me to nod.
"Same with you, huh?"
"All the time mate, all the time." he laughs, causing me to chuckle as well as Mai looks up at us looking confused, not getting our joke.
"Why are you two laughing?" she asks, confused while I shook my head.
"Nothing," I said, looking down at her. She pouts, as I move my hand and flicker her nose playfully.
"Hey," she wrinkles her nose causing me to chuckle a bit more, but then look back at the young man.
"One more question, did you manage to look at the profile of this woman?" I asked him. He furrowed his brows together but shook his head.
"Nothing, in particular, she was wearing all black and a hoodie, but I did notice something," he said to me.
"Anything that can help." I pushed.
"When she turned to look at me, I did take notice of her eyes, they were white, and it was freaky."
….
….
….
That bothered me so much, after our chat. I manage to book another room, but this time on the first floor. Bou-san had to go to his own room to change clothes, but I'm sure he's going to question us sooner or later.
Mai explained to me everything that happened, including the ghost, which I found interesting at this point, while I explained to her about our situation with The Lady in blue.
"So she didn't show up?" Mai asks me while I look in the side of her black bag looking for her ointment.
(Bou-san and I went to get her things earlier and brought them down to her new room.)
"No," I said as Mai goes up to me, causing me to look up since I'm sitting on the mattress.
"I think there's a bit more to it than. I want to go to the village if you don't mind," she asks. I stare at her, realizing something.
She's matured a lot in these last two years.
"I'll make arrangements," I said as Mai smiles at me tenderly, moving her hand to brush my damp hair.
"Before that, go and take a shower, you catch your death," she said, moving her hand and wiggling her fingers for me to grab it.
"What about your back?"
"Killing me, but what can I do? I have to live with this for the rest of my life." She shrugs, accepting the reality. I grabbed her hand and lift her hand to give her fingers a tender kiss. She smiles blushing at my gesture.
"I'll take care of you, and we'll find a cure for this," I told her. Mai kept looking at me.
"Even if I can't have children, you still want me?" she questions me. I was taken aback by her sudden words.
"If we have them, we will, if not, we don't, I won't be leaving you because of it. Do you want children?" I asked. She stares at me, not sure what emotion she goes through, but she nods at me.
"I do, I want your babies, I want to make a family with you." she blushed hard not looking at me, my face turns hot as I look away, feeling my throat turn dry.
I don't mind, I wouldn't want anyone else to be the mother of my children.
"Then let's work on your lower back first, we still have time, this is all new to us and we are still young, at least let's wait," I admit causing her to look surprised at me.
"So you don't mind?"
"Having a mini you running around the house would be lovely," I admit to her as I stood up and let go of her hand. She stares at me shocked, not realizing how much my words impacted her.
"From this job, I learned that life is too short, we don't know when is our last breath, and I'm not opposed to having a family," I admit.
Would be nice to see a small version of Mai running around the house or a boy? That would be interesting.
I felt a sudden warmth fill my heart causing me to touch my chest.
I smiled gently and went to the bathroom and began to remove my drenched shirt, feeling sticky and cold. Then I lay my hands on the faucet, letting everything progress.
I wonder now if that ghost has to do anything with what's going on with Mai. I hope Lin gets it done by tomorrow.
Lost in my thoughts, I didn't notice Mai enters the bathroom, and I lift my gaze to see Mai's arms wrap around my waist, pressing her warm cheek against my bare back. Giving me a back hug and I couldn't help but smile, feeling her warmth.
I could feel my heart clench as she kisses my back.
I slowly turn, and Mai lifts her gaze, without a word, I knew with her eyes what she wanted to tell me.
I missed you...
I missed you as well Mai.
I lowered myself and pressed my lips to hers, and this sudden overwhelming feeling overshadows us, as our kissing becomes longing, passionate and loving. I wrap my arm around her, pulling her closer to me, feeling her hands on my naked torso, caressing it gently, as she kisses me so sweetly. I couldn't help it, but love it, as it dawns on me, that I'm hers, and she's the only woman that can touch me so intimately, and no one else in this world.
"I thought, I wasn't going to... See you again. I love you Naru... I can't stop myself... I'm only yours, and I don't... Want to lose you." Mai said between the kiss, breathing hard, feeling her hand caressing my face as I rub her waist. My heart burst out of how intimate this was, how profound her words are.
She didn't, Mai is here with me. I don't even...
"Nothing... Happen, Mai... and as I am, I can't... Stop myself, I'm... I'm yours as well." I said between kisses as well, not daring to stop. Gently I turned her, and somehow, between our kiss, I hoisted her to sit on the counter. Slowly breaking out, I began to caress her face with my nose, closing my eyes and feeling her lean into me.
"This is so beautiful, I didn't know... Loving someone this deeply would be this complicated and beautiful at the same time. I was so scared." Feeling a tear coming from her, I pulled back to look at her.
"Did I hurt you?" I asked, concerned, but she shook her head.
"No, you were gentle. I... I'm scared to death. I have no idea why this person is doing this to me. I almost lost you because of her and now she knows where we are. I..." She stops rambling while I grabbed her hand.
"Do you trust me?" I asked her. She nods at me.
"With all my heart," she said to me. I smiled at her words, which means so much to me.
"As I trust you, Mai. We are a family now and we take care of each other. I won't let her take you." She stares at me letting my words sink in.
"Yes, we are a family and I won't let her take you." she smiles at my words.
"Mai, do remember this as well..." I wipe her tears.
"I missed you very much that it drove me crazy and I learned that I can't live without you. I tried hard to suppress it, but I can't anymore. I love you, Mai. Only God knows how much I love you, you're my best friend, my assistant, and the love of my life. I never thought that I would fall in love this deeply, it's strange and new for me, but I don't hate it, it's... A beautiful feeling, and being loved back the same way, I know this sounds strange coming out of me, but amazing. I may not be the strongest of my words when it comes to expressing my words, but..." I was cut off when Mai leans forward and press her lips to mine, giving me a chaste kiss.
Pulling back, she licks her lips as fresh tears running down her cheeks.
"Naru, you are my world. I can't live without you, and your confession is so beautiful, you have no idea how right now I want to float, to dance, to just hold you and never let you go. Thank you so much for loving me back, for confessing, I'm the happiest woman alive. I understand you aren't the strongest when It comes to expressing yourself, but I'm used to it, your actions speak louder, that I know." She cries out with a full-blown smile, while her brown eyes jump with joy. I stare at her, feeling like the happiest man alive, to have her and being so understanding.
"I'm not done with her, not just yet." We heard behind us interrupting our special moment. I turned around and my eyes narrowed as this new ghost stands in front of us, with white eyes looking straight at us. Mai yelps, grabbing my shoulder and pulling me close to her.
"Who are you?" I question it as the woman's ghost points at Mai.
"Your worse nightmare!" she said when suddenly my head began to spin, while images appeared in my head.
I'm running down the hallway, holding a bloody hand, as I pan up, I see Mai on a stretcher bed, her pink dress bloody, but I couldn't tell if it's her own blood or not.
"Hold on Mai!" I can hear myself say.
"It's fine Naru. I'm fine." She weakly said, giving me a sad loving smile.
"No, you're not... I can't lose you, Mai. I love you, I love you so much after all these years, you're my life." I said, trembling in pure fear of losing someone else that I love so dearly.
I look over to see the masked people attending to my wife, I think they are doctors. Anxiety overcame me, with my heart breaking apart to see my wife in this state.
"Naru," I heard Mai's weak voice call out to me. I look down to see Mai looking at me, with tears running down her eyes, but with that love in her eyes she always gives me.
"I.. Love you as well, after all these years... I never stop loving you." She gasped before she passes out."
I let out an agonizing groan when the images finished, grasping my chest, and feeling my heart tearing apart after the images stopped. I lift my gaze as tears gather in my eyes.
"What was that?" I question the ghost, as Mai jumps down, only to yell out in pain, but I felt her arms wrap around me. I turn to look at her, she's looking at me.
"A glimpse of the truth... But I will make sure she will never wake up after what she did." Before I could answer her, everything grows dark.
"MAI!"
"NARU!
...
...
...
Opening my eyes, I found myself breathing hard, clenching to my chest feeling sweat roll down my face.
"What was that?" I gasped out looking around to find myself in my office, with my teacup on top of the table. I was going to grab it, but I took notice that a tear landed on my hand. I look down and squint my eyes, feeling confused, then I press my fingers on my cheeks to feel more tears.
Why am I crying?
I frowned, not liking this at all, and wiped my tears. I pulled back, leaning against my chair until I heard a knock on the door.
"Come in," I called out. The door opened and Lin entered the room.
"I got more information on the case, the lady in blue," he said to me, with papers at hand. I frowned, as I tilt my head.
"What's wrong?" Lin caught my sudden movement and turns around to check it out but didn't see anyone, and turns to look back at me.
"Where's Mai?" I asked him.
"Oh, in the back room, she's organizing the documents, you look disappointed that I wasn't her," he chuckles as I rose a brow.
"I wanted to speak to her about the whole getting a boyfriend, do you wish to pretend to be her boyfriend?" I question him, but I blinked, feeling confused by this.
Why does this conversation feel familiar?
"Noll, you've been missing her like crazy since you left her, why don't you ask her, I think Madoka will kill me," he said to me, in a dry tone. I ponder on his words, now feeling a bit excited by this.
I can do that, after all work-related.
"You think she will accept?" I asked as I stood up, and went around the desk, now feeling nervous.
"I have a feeling she will, go and ask her before she leaves, go and help her," he said. I nodded and rushed my steps, not sure why feeling nervous and excited to see her.
Reaching the back door, I took noticed there was a bunch of paper laying on the floor.
Might as well make an excuse.
With that, I bend down to grab a handful and pushed the door, to enter. I stop when my heart leaps with joy to see her.
Why do I feel this way? Is... Is more powerful than I thought, this feeling of longing for her.
Mai looks over me and arched a brow, but then walks up to me and takes a few piles of papers, and places them on the floor dusting her hands. I was so caught up in just staring at her, that I simply said.
"Thanks," I said, walking past her so she won't see me flustered, and placing the rest of the papers on top of the blue
"Why are you here?" she asks me, causing me to look at her with an arched brow.
Okay, this feels strange, this feels familiar to me.
"Aren't I allow?" I simply asked, she blinks, crossing her arms.
"Err, of course, but this is strange, you normally are doing other things, then wasting your time doing these manual tasks," she explains to me.
"Lin told me to help you, so I listen, not that hard." she froze, but then shakes her head, as though something wasn't right.
"Mai?" I question her.
"Sorry, I'm having a major whiplash, I feel like we had this conversation before," she admits.
So she's feeling this as well?
"I feel the same, everything feels the same."
"Really?" she asks me. I nodded at her.
"Yes, I can't put my finger on it, but it feels like we lived this already," I admit to her.
"Yes, like something here is wrong," Mai added.
"Wrong?" I question her, she nods clenching her chest as though it began to hurt her.
"Mai?" I walk closer to her, and she doesn't hesitate to grab my arm for support.
"I think... We shouldn't be here, what did you come to propose to me a deal? To be your girlfriend or your wife?" Her eyes widen as she looks up at me.
"I want you to be my wife again," I said truthfully a bit shocked that she accepted it, and not realizing that I said it again. It just came out naturally.
I move my hand and graze her cheek gently with my fingertips and I can feel her tremble under my touch. I lowered my head, pressing my lips on her other cheek, kissing it gently while hearing her gasp.
"Yes, I would love to be your wife again," Mai gasped out, as she bites her lower lip, closed her eyes leaning into my touches.
"I... I have no idea what's going on, but..."
"Do you trust me?" I asked as she pulls back to look at me blushing hard.
"I trust you Naru with all my heart," she admits causing me to smile at her, feeling my love for her just becoming deeper.
I heard that before, but where?
"And I trust you as well, we only rely on each other, on whatever is going on, we will face it together." I held her tight, fearing that she would disappear from me. I have no clue what's going on, but one thing is for sure, my feelings for Mai is real and I wouldn't change it for the world.
Thank you for the Reviews; Yes, Mai and Naru started the progress again if you're confused, but there's a cause for that and the whole Lady in blue trust me, is a real case, not their imagination and everything they went through is real their emotions and conversation. I'll explain later why it plays a big part in Mai and Naru, but I'm sure my readers are smart enough to guess it. :) I won't repeat the same scenario, but move on with a new case. :)... Also.. there's more to it.
