They heard chanting coming from outside and rushed over to a large round window.
"My personal favorite, boils, and sores," Jonathan said, as they observed the mob.
"So it has begun, the beginning of the end," Ardeth said, placing a hand on the small of Sam's back, and she leaned into him.
"Not yet it hasn't," Evelyn said, and they rushed to the tablet. The twins and the curator looked over the tablet carefully.
"Hurry up." O'Connell urged.
"Patience is a virtue." Evy sing-songed.
"Not right now it isn't." Sam reminded.
"I've got it! The gold book is at Hamunaptra inside the statue of Horus take that Bembridge scholars!"
"Which would be located not far to the east of the statue of Anubis," Sam informed.
"Don't tell me we got to go back there." O'Connell pouted.
"If we want to kill the creature, yes," Sam answered as they raced out to the car. Just as they were getting in Beni spotted them.
"Imhotep! Imhotep!" He yelled, and an inhuman shriek sounded and they could hear the mob coming toward them.
"You're going to get yours, Beni!" O'Connell yelled as they pulled away. Jonathan stopped the car for a moment in front of a wall of people under Imhotep's spell, and O'Connell slammed his foot down on top of her brother's causing the convertible to lurch forward into the mob where the three adventurers and the warrior fought off the possessed people as best they could, but Daniels was eventually dragged out, even with the group holding on to him. They heard his guns go off and then a short silence before he screamed. Jonathan crashed the car and they all got out running blindly down the streets only to end up at a dead-end, and the ghouls closed them in, only parting enough to allow the fully regenerated creature through.
He reached for Evie and said something in Hebrew that Beni translated. "Come with me, my princess. It is time to make you mine, forever."
"For all eternity, idiot." Evie corrected.
"Take my hand and I will spare your friends."
"No!" Sam yelled stepping in front of her twin. "Take me, I'm stronger."
"You are stronger but you are not the one who read from the book."
"Any bright ideas?" Evie asked O'Connell.
"I'm thinking." He replied.
"You better think of something quick, because if he turns me into a mummy, you're the first one I'm coming after." She informed and then stepped forward.
"Evie!" Sam yelled, reaching for her at the same time her friend did. Ardeth holding them both back.
"Wait, he still has to take me to Hamunaptra to perform the ritual."
"She's right to live today, fight tomorrow," Ardeth informed wisely. Sam glared at the creature.
"I'll be seeing you," O'Connell warned, and Imhotep dragged Evie away calling to his mob to kill them. Beni grabbed the key from Jonathan and followed after his new friend. The horde closed in on them and as they fought the zombies back someone opened the sewer grate under them, and Sam was pulled back and lowered down. After she, her brother, O'Connell, and Ardeth were down in the sewers Sam started breathing deeply.
"Sammy?" Jonathan called worriedly.
"Jonathan, I'd suggest you duck," O'Connell told him. Sam grabbed one of O'Connell's guns and fired it blindly down the tunnel until all she heard was the click, click, click of the empty barrels. "Feel better, Sammy?" Her American friend asked, and she slammed him against the wall with a growl.
"No! I am not ok! That thing took my sister, I want his head!" Ardeth grabbed her arms and gently pulled her away.
"It would be wise to remain calm in the face of this danger." He advised.
"Sam, I promise you I will get your sister back." Sam nodded and the group sloshed through the sewers. "So, I've been meaning to ask you, what was up with you and Henderson?"
"I'd like to know that as well, the Yank certainly seemed sweet on you Sammy." Jonathan agreed, and Sam felt the warrior next to her brush her hand.
"He was," Sam told them. "I think he spent as much effort trying to win my affections as he did on the . . .work we did together."
"What happened, he seemed devoted enough." They kicked open a grate in an alley and crawled out.
"He was until he stepped into a saloon, and then his devotions switched to the prettiest girl." O'Connell paused and looked at her, grabbing her by the arms and kissing her on the cheek.
"Sammy you are a genius!" He declared.
"What'd I make you think of this time?"
"Winston." The two adventures grinned at each other.
As they made their way into the desert to go see the British pilot, O'Connell leaned closer to Ardeth who was watching Sam closely.
"I don't think she's slept since we returned to Hamunaptra. She had been restless when we arrived and hasn't slept since her sister has been in danger."
"Samantha is a worthy warrior."
"A worthy woman too. We've known each other for years now, I've seen her drink, fight and ride with the best, but I've never seen her love." The man shot O'Connell an unreadable look. "Sam is strange, even by American standards. Any half-decent guy who sees a woman walking down the street in pants, with her hair down and a hunting knife on her hip will move to the other side of the street. Any guy that doesn't isn't worth her time."
"What about you?"
"Me? Oh, I gave her hell for disguising herself as a man, and then we went and had some drinks."
"You don't want her?"
"There for a short while I thought I did hell who wouldn't? She's smart, beautiful, and brave, but she's not the woman for me. I just hope the man she is meant for realizes it."
